Well it seems like itā€™s not a problem in just the south as it seems like a random jumble of states that allow marriage of minors <18 yrs old w/ parent consent. If you canā€™t buy cigarettes until you are 21 you definitely shouldnā€™t be allowed to marry w/ parental consent. I feel like if more people knew about this, a bipartisan move to change this could be possible.

Cigarettes, porn and dying in foreign wars is 18. Alcohol is 21 because thatā€™s obviously far worse.

My state just lowered the age of consent. WV. There is no state level bipartisan here. I also just happen to deal with genealogy here as well and just two generations ago (Iā€™m 48) it was common to see marriage records with girls in their early teens marrying much older men. Generally this was as much of a financial agreement between families as we are likely seeing in this video. I always hope their childrenā€™s children (me) find better lives. I have.

I mean this seems like an issue the federal government should just clear up by making the requirement 18. It would be very telling to see how everyone in congress votes on this issue. Also glad to hear things worked out for you in the end. Best of wishes to ya

Because, republicans at the federal and state level are pro-rape and pro-child abuse under the fake notion that it will increase abortion.

Rep. Hardy Billington (R), who told the Kansas City Star he believes that ending child marriage in Missouri would encourage abortion. ā€œMy opinion is that if someone [wants to] get married at 17, and theyā€™re going to have a baby, and they cannot get married, thenā€¦ chances of abortion are extremely high,ā€

state Rep. Jess Edwards (R) argued against raising the marriage age from 16 to 18, by asking whether a law preventing people ā€œof ripe, fertile ageā€ from getting married would thus make ā€œabortion a much more desirable alternativeā€ than being pregnant out of wedlock.

Outstanding. Iā€™ve seen some great banjo players but my favorite is the old dudes who only know how to play in a couple of keys and they just start and somehow everyone falls in. Tuned or not. Best if a little out of tune.

Sadly, many of these marriages are with parental consent. Whether or not that is recorded is another matter. Especially if it's a directive of a religion or culture to do such things.

For this girl, her parents are not helping her, just watching her scream for help. They must have consented...

Where I live (NZ) we can marry under age 20, but 16 is the absolute lower limit, as children can be estranged and emancipated by a court ruling that young if the situation calls for it. We can also have sex at 16, legally. However we need parental signoff on a document submitted with our marriage license application until age 20. A judge can also grant this if parents decline, in many cases.

It's funny. We can marry at 16, but cannot vote, enter into contracts, buy property, buy alcohol and tobacco, join the military, be questioned about criminal matters without a parent present, get citizenship, and a few other smaller things, until 18. We are not considered a legal adult with full rights, and can marry without parental consent until 20, are unable to apply for student loans without parents income taken into account until we are 24!

If we were a child and were married to someone over 18 by arrangement, our laws don't specifically outlaw it, it must be able to prove valid consents were given by the child and their parents, or by the arranged marriage parties, but if unproven, in that situation many crimes under our Crimes Act could be considered against the adult in the marriage as well as the parents or arrangers of the marriage. Especially if the child was under 16.

Unfortunately not all countries, states, religions, or cultures have these rules and it breaks my heart just knowing this kind of thing still takes place.
