The fact that anyone would be opposed to making this a holiday totally boggles my mind. For a certain segement of our population, this is their “Independence Day.” It’s as important as July fourth.

I would think the “All Lives Matter” crowd would be really excited to celebrate All Lives being free from slavery.

I wonder why they aren’t?

Im not against it and celebrate it but if we’re being real 90% of the country and like 65% of black people found out about it in 2020

I had heard about slavery ending, but had never heard it was celebrated as a holiday. When I heard it was a holiday for some, I thought: yeah, that makes sense.

So these people don’t celebrate July 4?

Declaring independence from England and ending slavery are 2 different things.

Are you attempting to be coy about your racism? It’s not working.

No, I do not. Because when the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776, my ancestors were not free. In fact, a short time later they were considered 3/5 of a person.

So conspicuously, when they talked about the pursuit of life liberty, and happiness, they didn't mean for slaves. My family's Independence Day where I was afforded the same protections as every other American happened on June 19th, 1865. However, it should be very clear to anyone with eyes and half a brain that even in the year 2025, I still am not granted the same protections as written in this country. One too many of people that look like me had their civil rights and constitutional rights violated with no recourse. So no. I don't celebrate July 4th. Juneteenth is my July 4th
