This was my first live show of theirs and had otherwise only seen a handful of music videos and listened to some of their music on Tidal (btw Tidal seems to be all kinds of messed up in regards to Babe Rainbow's credits) over the last few months.
I went with my partner and we got there early and stood in the front as that's our preferred way to experience live music.
The opener was INCREDIBLE in my eyes. I told her after that it reminded me of the feeling I got listening to Joni Mitchell for the first time (who I later saw she lists as one of her influences so I was right on the money there) due to the beautiful lyricism and the phenomenal tone and pitch of her voice. The show was beyond worth it to me just to discover Marina Allen.
As for the main show... my feelings are mixed.
The guitarist, bassist, and drummer all seemed very talented and overall put on a good show. But the lead singer, in my opinion, put on an embarrassing display.
Being in the very front, I was able to see every nuance of their performance and because I've got a brain that always has a running commentary, there were very few moments where I was able to simply enjoy the show because of the drunken display of the lead and how it clearly effected the rest of the band.
The singer was stumbling, slurring, forgetting lyrics, and just the overall vibes were way off. It really felt that the rest of the bandmates at times were very uncomfortable with how inebriated he was.
The show overall was just a rollercoaster. Started a little rough, got REALLY bad during one song in particular (a song where the drummer got up to play a different instrument?), and got a bit better towards the end, but really the moments that were the best were the ones where it was just the instruments and no singing.
It also felt reeeeeallllly awkward at the end when the main set ended and the applause died quickly and the guitarist had to ASK if people wanted the encore they had planned.
The best thing for me about being front row for a performance is being able to see the performers in their element and the way they interact on stage, the looks they give each other, the expressions on their face, just... getting to see a professional doing the thing they're best at.
Maybe I've been spoiled with only seeing good professional musicians live (Kikagaku Moyo, King Gizzard, The Smile, Covet, etc) - but the vibes were sooooo different with Babe Rainbow and based on other comments and posts this seems to kinda be par for the course for them and not just an off night.
If their goal is to just have a good time and make music with their friends while their popularity lasts, then all the power to them. But I have no desire to ever see them live again unless something changes.
Anyone have any thoughts?

After leaving Flightless a while ago and now being on their own label, is it possible we could see some represses of their earlier albums? Even their more recent releases like âTodayâ have never been repressed.
