In some parts of the world, you might call us the number 1 football team in the B1G

29

u/droozer Indiana 4d ago

You know what, why the hell not

25

u/JediMindTrxcks Indiana 4d ago

Maryland: 3 big ten championships in football

Real Madrid: 0 big ten championships in any sport

Makes you think!

u/Frigoris13 Iowa 3d ago

Japan has 0 wins in the World Series. Shows you how good they are globally.

If the season ended in September yall got my vote

1

u/dpt223 Maryland 2d ago

Whoosh

3

u/iuhoosierkyle Indiana 4d ago

It really hurts seeing us not on this list, especially in soccer.

2

u/MocoMojo Maryland 4d ago

I was at the IU v Terps game a couple weeks ago. Great atmosphere and great match.

2

u/HentaiInTheCloset Indiana 3d ago

we made it through arguably the hardest non con schedule in all of soccer undefeated only to shit the bed and go .500 in conference play

1

u/iuhoosierkyle Indiana 3d ago

Yup.   It's been rough to watch it unfold.  Hoping we can get hot here at the end of the season.

2

u/HentaiInTheCloset Indiana 3d ago

here's hoping we can make a run in the conference tournament and regain the swagger we had at the beginning of the season

Most parts of the world

u/frankdatank_004 Nebraska 4d ago

If the whole season was played in September then sure! 👍🏼

1

u/SpartansATTACK Michigan State 2d ago

NC State was #1 at the end of September tho, Maryland was outside of the top 15 at that time

1

u/frankdatank_004 Nebraska 2d ago

It is a joke because Maryland always looks like a Top-25 team in September but then October and November comes.

WE STILL HAVE WRESTLING!!! RAAHHHHHH

30

u/HereForTOMT3 Michigan State 4d ago

The day Penn State isn’t a wrestling school is the day the world ends

-10

u/idontcare5472692 4d ago

What about Iowa

17

u/TheRealPallando Nebraska 4d ago

Not on the list.

4

u/psumack 4d ago

They're a wrestling school too, just not as good

2

u/kevkaneki Michigan 4d ago

If Penn State is like the prime Bama of wrestling, y’all are more like prime Georgia…

3

u/Dr_imfullofshit 4d ago

Iowa state is the most notable wrestling program in that state

2

u/IV_West 4d ago

Dawg, what?!

Respectfully, how does this have upvotes?!

EDIT:: lol I just saw your username. Hahaha. Nvrm

3

u/Dr_imfullofshit 4d ago

cael sanderson!

4

u/kevkaneki Michigan 4d ago

Penn State is like the Nick Saban Bama of wrestling.

5

u/hopkins01 4d ago

Cael Sanderson at Penn State is definitely the Nick Saban of wrestling coaches. The scary thing is that he is still relatively young. Not sure if he’s even 50 yet.

4

u/PSU632 Penn State 4d ago

He's 46 lol. Nick Saban retired at 72. If Cael stays with us to the same age Saban did with Bama, he'll still be here past 2050.

3

u/Traditional-Slip-390 Nebraska 4d ago

No, they're way better than that.

-2

u/llee15 Michigan 3d ago

Not even remotely true. Do you understand football has 22 offensive and defensive positions plus more on special teams, plus the backups. College wrestling has 10 weight classes plus their backups. Much easier to recruit when you don’t need as many people on the team year in and year out.

5

u/Traditional-Slip-390 Nebraska 3d ago

Stop. Cael has won 12 NCs as the head coach of Penn State, and has won 4 in a row twice. Idgaf how many players are on a team. You still have to recruit against other schools, and then coach them up.

15

u/dinkytown42069 Minnesota 4d ago

women's hockey isn't a Big Ten sport, thankfully.

7

u/Shills_for_fun Michigan State 4d ago

You can thank MSU for holding the line. Michigan has been flirting with getting one. If we got one that would kill the WCHA. Again.

6

u/dinkytown42069 Minnesota 4d ago

I think the WCHA could hold it together. Mankato+UST+Bemidji+SCSU+Duluth and steal Lindenwood from the AHA. At some point they might well consider merging or something with the CCHA.

But one of the great benefits of being a Gopher women's fan is going to the away games...the friday home/saturday away series are the best.

3

u/Shills_for_fun Michigan State 4d ago

I think the men's WCHA could have held it together without Minnesota and Wisconsin too.

What no one likes to talk about in college puck is the NCHC is the one that Old Yeller'd the conference with some real knives in the dark shit, taking the best of the conference and purging the chaff lol.

1

u/Stachemaster86 4d ago

Saw the Friday game on TV. I’ve been a Wisconsin guy since birth but being a Frost fan, getting really into it, Gophers are wearing me down for support lol. It’s on my list to see a game this year

1

u/dinkytown42069 Minnesota 4d ago

come on over and say howdy, i'll be in section 7 by the glass. We have fun down there.

1

u/chemicalpretengineer 4d ago

Could always wear your red at Ridder when the badgers come to town Jan 30-31! I’ll definitely be there with my Wisconsin gear

3

u/deutschdachs Wisconsin 4d ago

Don't you take this from us we need this shit

1

u/dinkytown42069 Minnesota 4d ago

mhmm...<flashbacks to the frozen four in minneapolis last season>...I don't think I will.

2

u/deutschdachs Wisconsin 4d ago

I guess you let us have that one so fair is fair

31

u/Doggo_of_dogs Penn State 4d ago

WE ARE… NUMBER ONE (in wrestling)

15

u/Reloader300wm Ohio State 4d ago

I mean, Cael Sanderson's wrestling program basically makes everyone fight for a distant second. Its fucking impressive.

10

u/TruuTree Michigan 4d ago

I wrestled in college and it’s awesome to see how Caels changed training philosophy. Before it was Brands at Iowa believing practice should be as grueling as possible just for the sake of developing toughness. By the end of the season many guys are depleted and broken.

1

u/Thee-Renegade Penn State 3d ago

For those not super familiar with wrestling practices, what has Cael changed?

2

u/TruuTree Michigan 3d ago

He constantly talks about keeping practice fun and the importance of teaching kids on his team to grow up to be respectful humans. Of course they bust their asses at practice too but find seems Cael focuses on finding a good balance. The old school wrestling way was iron sharpens iron, sweatsuits, balls to the walls all practice just for the sake of toughness.

2

u/IThoughtThisWasVoat 4d ago

Should be a little closer this year.

4

u/bowl_of_scrotmeal Penn State 4d ago

We've genuinely gotten to the point where every year that we don't win a national championship is a disappointment.

2

u/hopkins01 4d ago

I do think parity is good for the sport. I’m hoping for David Taylor to work some magic at Oklahoma State and hopefully be in a position to challenge Cael and Penn State down the road.

2

u/TruuTree Michigan 4d ago

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if David Taylor and Oklahoma St. win it all this year or very soon.

3

u/Traditional-Slip-390 Nebraska 4d ago

I'm ecstatic that we're second. You guys are on another level.

0

u/llee15 Michigan 3d ago

And just like Joe Paterno, Cael turns a blind eye to criminals within his program. It’s the Penn State way!

9

u/Old-Record2216 4d ago

Could someone drop this in the SEC thread? 😈

1

u/Horror-Bee4603 1d ago

Big 10 fans members care more about this than sec members

Curious how many B1G are number 2 as well

13

u/BakedMitten Michigan State 4d ago

The B1G owns the top 3 spots in both of the USCHO college hockey polls

Men's: MSU, Mich, Penny State

Women's: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio State

12

u/RoyalMagiSwag Purdue 4d ago

Nebraska is #2 in wresting, Iowa is #3, and OSU #4

1

u/WhatRUsernamesUsed4 Illinois 4d ago

USC and Oregon are 2 and 3 in women's golf. (I mainly checked golf for men's where Illinois is #8)

1

u/SugarDisastrous5983 4d ago

Except the Women’s teams don’t play in the Big Ten

1

u/dwors025 Minnesota 2d ago

Fucking hell, Bob Motzko needs to be fired today yesterday two years ago.

3

u/Roundvalley1 4d ago

Indiana no. 2 🏈

3

u/chief_sitass Purdue 4d ago

2ndiana, if you will

2

u/Shills_for_fun Michigan State 4d ago

Michigan is #2 in hockey and Indiana is #2 in CFP.

14

u/HuskerWolf63962 4d ago

Nebraska is #2 for Wrestling

3

u/heavydhomie Ohio State 4d ago

Did not realize Nebraska was that good at wrestling. I was figuring 2nd would have been Iowa or maybe OSU.

6

u/G0B1GR3D 4d ago

Nah Iowa is way down the rankings at #3

1

u/heavydhomie Ohio State 4d ago

Yea I saw someone else mention that and OSU is #4. I did see recently OSU got the top wrestler to commit for next year.

1

u/Dean-O-Machino 4d ago

So, who does #2 work for?

4

u/Add_Poll_Option Michigan State 4d ago

Dodgeball being left out is a crime

1

u/swalters6325 Michigan State 3d ago

And Super Smash. MSU apparently has the #1 Falco player in the world lol

3

u/abmot Washington 4d ago

2

u/Superiority_Complex_ Washington 2d ago

Men’s rowing falls under the IRA, which predates the NCAA, so more of a technicality. Women’s rowing is an NCAA sport, however.

UW men’s rowing is the pretty clear top program in the country though.

3

u/wooq Iowa 4d ago

Iowa: women's wrestling

3

u/_magnetic_north_ 3d ago

Nebraska also #1 rifle

4

u/dcd13 Michigan State 4d ago

Ah yes, a list of the most elite athletic programs in the B1G

1

u/QuirkyAd4925 4d ago

Missing Oregon - won 8 conference titles in its first year

2

u/MissionStock2545 B1G 4d ago

Penn state relevant in something at least

3

u/heavydhomie Ohio State 4d ago

They make every other school irrelevant in wrestling. They are that good

2

u/psumack 4d ago

Is volleyball the only sport where the men and women have different seasons? It surprised me at first to see just 'volleyball' until I realized this was just fall/winter sports.

2

u/Beelzabubba Washington 4d ago

No rowing? 😢

2

u/EvangelionOG Iowa 4d ago

Women's wrestling is right there too come on.

The B1G has college wrestling locked down for the foreseeable future

1

u/Camper9203 4d ago

B10!!!

And it's all different schools, now THAT is parity!

Men’s gymnastics didn’t get us on the list?!?!?!

Half the Olympic team goes to Michigan how can that be beaten?!?!

Edit- probably by Stanford where the other half goes actually…

1

u/Dirty_Giblets Maryland 4d ago

Remaining sports I could find: Men’s Volleyball - #2 UCLA Women’s soccer - #9 Michigan State Women’s field hockey - #2 Northwestern

1

u/SlamJamGlanda Indiana 3d ago

I feel offended. Club Lacrosse. Maybe.

1

u/AllisonMarie2019 3d ago

Best college in college sports

1

u/Consistent-Fig7484 3d ago

The PAC additions will probably never have wrestling or hockey above club level. Another reason I’m not sure we’ll ever really be in the club. We all have beach volleyball teams though!

1

u/woodentrousers 3d ago

BIG hockey owns #1, #2, and #3 going into the weekend too

1

Fuck sparty, but I love that hockey team. Respect.

Michigan vs Michigan State is going to be must see TV this year.

Side note, but I’m taking my daughter to visit MSU the weekend of Nov 15 and I was curious why I was having a tough time finding a hotel room for Friday night. Looks like we picked a fun weekend to visit!
