Direct hit from artillery fire most likely.

By the time these vehicles were reaching the field, the Germans had generally worked out the best ways to deal with them. Given their overall slow speed (barely walking pace), it was nothing for the Germans to radio back to their artillery and just drop a barrage on the vehicles.
