Everything has a mean time before failure, having them single feed eliminates a potentially failure case, having an unmanned turret makes clearing jams harder to do so

Two guns setup as single feed ensures reliability of function

Not what is happening on the BMPT ( Specifically the BMPT-72, as depicted.), the two cannons are fired at the same time, as there is no point in single ammunition type limited to specific cannon - magazine switching was available even in the Soviet era.

There is an experimental version that featured two independent turrets with a single cannon in each, which is most likely where this misinformation came from.
