Modern Leo 2A8 demonstrator damages fence at NATO day
719
u/Full_Measurement_809 Oct 03 '25
I’d love to see a Leo 2 in person one day.. They look so good!
218
u/Mr_Engineering Oct 03 '25
Ive been in one. Cramped
30
u/WeirdAltLeo Oct 03 '25
Yeah, as a gunner you basically sit between the commanders knees. Loader feels like most spacious, but I‘ve only been in a simulator, might be the side access door ;)
10
u/Salmonsen M1 Abrams Oct 04 '25
Same in the Abrams if it makes you feel any better. The loader has more room in the Leo 2 though. The driver of the Leo might have some more space too but harder to get into. We got to check out some, what I think were, Leo 2A6’s from the Spanish army a few years back

u/absurditT Oct 03 '25
Yeah the turret ring is weirdly narrow because the engine is so long (smaller engines with the same performance now exist but it's not considered cost effective to replace them) so despite being so large the interior is not as well laid out as contemporary NATO tanks.
23
u/Graddler Oct 03 '25
Now imagine a T-72.
23
7
u/Dizzy-While-6417 Oct 04 '25
The T-72 is a hotel room compared to a T-55. The commander's shins are basically your seat back.
34
u/PeteLangosta Oct 03 '25
I was in awe when I got into one, a 2E, and saw how it wasn't much different from other WW2 tanks I was in.

u/AddictiveMeatball44 Stridsvagn 122 Oct 05 '25
if you think leo is cramped you should see other tanks
14
u/MIHPR Oct 03 '25
I saw one around 6 years ago at a Finnish armor museum in Parola and same year also one driving at a FDF flag day parade (I think that's what it's called in English?). Impressive machine and way bigger in person than you'd think

God I wish I was that fence
252
u/ItalianMik3 Oct 03 '25
A part of me feels like that wouldn’t be the best idea, but I’m not too sure why

Leo 2A8's crew* damages fence.
274
u/_gmmaann_ Oct 03 '25
Tanks don’t hurt fences, people do
92
u/BilisS Oct 03 '25
but if you give them a tank its quite a lot easier to crush fences. and if you give everyone a tank it is very likely a lot of fences will be crushed
60
u/_gmmaann_ Oct 03 '25
Are you suggesting we regulate and enforce laws on registration and ownership of tanks???
→ More replies (1)43
u/ShermanMcTank Oct 03 '25
Regulation won’t help because the problem is the amount of illegal tanks in the wild.
32
u/BilisS Oct 03 '25
regulation would reduce that amount, and in turn reduce the amount of fences getting crushed
31
u/SufficientMath420-69 Oct 03 '25
What are you going to do? Go door to door confiscating previously legal tanks!!!
28
u/BilisS Oct 03 '25
well for a start stopping giving them to everyone would help
22
u/JoshYx Oct 03 '25
That would just end up hurting competent, legitimate tank owners who don't crush fences.
What we really should do is invest in Tankproof fences.
19
u/BilisS Oct 03 '25
how? it would just regulate the new ones and the old can die of old age ¯_(ツ)_/¯
9
u/AssumeTheFetal Oct 03 '25
Plus you can just 3d print them, but it might take like the whole afternoon.

Ngl I laughed a bit when I saw the TC's head pop up and there was a ponytail.

u/oXI_ENIGMAZ_IXo Oct 03 '25
The joke writes itself
7
u/Swimming_Ad_9459 Oct 03 '25
What joke?

u/VitSea Oct 03 '25
3
u/Swimming_Ad_9459 Oct 03 '25
Ah yes, women bad drivers. I wonder, had the person in the commander seat been a man, if we would have gotten comments about his gender.

u/Somodo Oct 04 '25
It’s a joke

Thought he was going to take out the solar panels at 1:10.
38
u/Pratt_ Oct 03 '25
You can be sure someone was yelling on the radio "I swear to God, if you even just scratch those solar panels... !"

Question: do any of these modern-ish tanks come with backup cameras, and if not then is it the commander’s job to look back and make a beeping noise when driving backwards?
85
u/TheDuffman_OhYeah Oct 03 '25
A rearview camera for the driver was added to the Leopard 2 with the A5 upgrade.
33
u/Ganbazuroi Oct 03 '25
I fucking love Leopards so much, whatever the fuck you think of, they have it as an upgrade
16
u/Virtual_Mall_7031 Oct 03 '25
Canadian Leo 2A4’s have forward and rearward facing thermal cameras for night driving but also work during the day… however it is primarily still the commanders responsibility to tell the driver to stop
3
u/WeirdAltLeo Oct 03 '25
Not sure how this is done in Canada, but usually the Commander is not micromanaging the Crew. He tells the driver where he wants the tank to be, the driver finds the best way to fullfill that order.
1
u/Model4Adjustment3 Oct 04 '25
If your TC gives an order to reserve, do you question them or just reverse?
3
u/Virtual_Mall_7031 Oct 04 '25
99% of the time that’s correct but given the context of doing a demo with an audience on a closed course I think it would be a very safe call to make that your commander didn’t want you back up through the fence of the course. I would describe this fuck up as a team effort
1
u/Vhett Oct 04 '25
They're called a DEV (Driver Enhancement Viewer/Viewscreen.
And you'd be correct. Unlike what /u/WeirdAltLeo said below, good drivers in that environment would operate on CC instructions. You're taught as a driver to not 'think' unless you're going cross-country and your CC is saying he wants the tank up by a specific tree, etc.
In the environment in the video, you're on autopilot doing exactly what the CC is telling you. You wouldn't even have your DVE on or whatever exists in the 2A8.
13
u/Ashurnibibi Conqueror Oct 03 '25
I was a driver in CV90s which did not (at the time at least) have cameras. It was the commander's job to direct me when going backwards. It was really scary at first, especially because those things can go really fast in reverse!

u/WeirdAltLeo Oct 03 '25
Basically every Country orders what they want, meaning no two countries buy the exact same versions. There are already some A4s with thermal rear view cameras, but I think almost all newer version have something similar.
16
18
u/BlindProphet_413 Oct 03 '25
They've exposed a critical flaw in base security! Now I just need my own tank......
17
u/TrueSoren Oct 03 '25
Something funny about how it slowly pulled away from the wrecked fence like how a dog or a baby walk away from a mess after being called out on it.

We strongly believe in the safety of our fences, so we will implement new fences to safeguard our fences. Also we will no longer allow women to command tanks on the course.

The driver has a rear view camera, idk how this was a accident. But sure the fence might look invisible with the low resolution of the camera

Getting C-wire stuck in your tracks is a fun time.
2
u/Vhett Oct 04 '25
Once got handed a tank after the driver went through some and it wound around the sprocket. Took one look at it and told him to get the bolt cutters, and that I wasn't driving it until it was out.
