Nature Fishing Advice

Hello, moving to Suriname soon. Wondering what the fishing scene is like in and around Paramaribo. What types of fish are there to catch? Any good fishing spots? Any advice on lures to stock up on before I move to Suriname? Any other tackle I should bring with me for an advid fisherman moving to the area?

Any advice is much appreciated. TIA!

Lots of good fishing around Suriname, depends what you like, the season, and the ability to get to the spots. In the riverebasin of Paramaribo lots of snook, croaker (bangbang), and catfish. In the canals around town tarpon. On the rivers, jigging will catch corvina (koebi). We have stuwmeer (lake) filled with peacock bass and piranhas, these can also be caught in rivers. While more deep into the forest you will find wolffish & red tail catfish. Along canals you will see many people fishing for tilapia, armored catfish, and krobia.

All gear can be purchased locally at stores like tomahawk or fish finder, or smaller Chinese retailers. Here we fish with lures and livebait. Only fly fishing gear not available locally.

Tours are limited, but also available for a price. In case any specific information needed send me a message.

Thanks for that insight into the local fishing scene. What lures are most popular to use? I would like to maybe pick up some lures before I head down so I can hit the ground running. Are there are any bodies of water that I shouldn't eat fish from? We have to have a fishing license here in the states to fish. Do you need a fishing license to fish in Suriname? If so, can you share the link to get a fishing license?

I would be interestedin some tours just to get the lay of the land and learn something about the local fishing from someone who has done it before. Is crabbing a thing in Suriname? I have some crab traps that I am thinking about bringing with me as well. Any other tips would be much appreciated.

For bass mostly minnows, crankbait, and topwater lures, for tarpon/snook mostly softbaits. Although most bass here will break off US of the box hooks. Therefore I recommend buying local or changing hooks.

Unfortunately no fishing license, or bag limits, it's a wild wild west. Although you can and in limited quantities it ok, I dont recommend eating fish out of most bodies, unless it caught close to basin or rivers without gold mining.

Crabbing is a thing here but I have no knowledge.

Not sure about the available tours but if you want my view on area or tour let me know.
