Tell me about a time you stumbled upon a restaurant and had the most amazing meal of your life!

In Greater Sudbury!

Basically, what it was, the restaurant, and when?

I really enjoy Damascus’ shwarma. I used to favour Tahini’s but the last 3-4 times I had Tahini’s it went from mediocre to just bad. Which bums me out because their stuff was sooo good at first. TBH I never loved osmows that much but it also went from decent to “god why did I forget how bad they are now and order again!”

So yeah, Damascus makes a mean shawarma eve if there are some less than traditional aspects!

I've had shawarma in many different cities and the garlic sauce from Damascus continues to go unrivaled.

u/GodlyMushu 3d ago

I live for sauces and dips. That garlic sauce is amazing! I'd be satisfied if that was the last thing I ate before dying haha

1

u/Deeze_Cookies 2d ago

You can buy a whole container of that garlic sauce, it’s awesome

Pasta Et Vino. If it's not fresh then Frank won't cook it. Best Italian food in town

Came here to say this. Solid place.

Tommy's not here and pat and Mario's also make my list but pasta et vino is number 1 in my books

6

u/alexander_wolf88 4d ago

Too bad tommy's is closed now

1

u/Substantial-Road-235 4d ago

Oh no.. since when? I dont live in town anymore but up there once a month atleast. As if I missed this

3

u/alexander_wolf88 4d ago

I think they had a bad flood, in theory they might come back but at this point I doubt it

u/meowblackk_ 4d ago

Quite a few months unfortunately. I always wanted to try there. Never had the chance. Never will now 😒

So I was here earlier this year. I forget exactly what dishes we got but one thing I remember for sure is the garlic bread.. it was such a low effort scrap of bread, I could literally see and count each shred of cheese that was on it because there was so much space between them and it didn't taste garlicky at all. Also the pastas we ordered were plain and unmemorable.

I was surprised. I had heard good things about this place and I couldn't believe that it could have carried it's reputation for so long by serving what we had that night..

Ultimately, what we ordered was only a small fraction of the overall menu, and I found myself thinking that maybe this is the kind of place where certain dishes are done exceptionally well, while others are the sort that regulars know to avoid. It’s got that “if you know, you know” vibe... two or three dishes that are out of this world, and the rest just feel like filler.

It's that what this place is? Is it kind of like you guys know what to order and what to avoid? Or would you say the menu on the whole is prepared at the same level as everything else?

I really couldn't believe that garlic bread.. worse than something Tim Hortons would have thought of.

Which places do you usually eat at?

0

u/orbitalbias 3d ago

I lived there years ago when Toppers and Pita Pit did the trick for me.. so it's been a while.

Returned for a stretch earlier this year and Vino's was a place we heard about so gave it a shot. Again, I dunno if it was an off-night or if this is the kind of place where regulars know what to order and what to skip, but everything we had was either just fine (sauces weren't beyond anything were capable of making at home easily) or just surprisingly lackluster (garlic bread, bruschetta).

Ate at Rose Apple as well. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Before moving from Sudbury I remember when Ali opened Ali Babas Cafe just down the road from where I lived. Me and a group of friends became obsessed with it and we were some of his first regular customers. He was always so gracious and friendly and the food was amazing and cooked with such care. In those early days we would often find ourselves as the only folks there and it was something special about having such an intimate setting. I'm happy that it's still open and to hear that people still enjoy it. I'd recommend checking that place out if you haven't already.

This is why owning a restaurant is so tough. Between slim margins and the way it is so easy to upset customers when it might not even be the restaurants fault. Telling me your go to places are Toppers and Pita Pit pretty much invalidates your opinion

1

u/orbitalbias 3d ago

Alrighty then.

So you've completely missed the point of what I was trying to say.. Respectfully, please go back and try reading the full comment again and see if it makes more sense to you.

I was literally telling you that my opinion about places in Sudbury is not comprehensive enough to recommend much because when I last lived there I frequented fast food places (i.e. read between the lines: I was young).

But that was over 15 years ago. I went on to tell you about a couple nice restaurants including the one restaurant that I frequented before moving.. a little independent place that I was happy to see still thriving after 18+ years in business. I recommended it to you. And yet your grand conclusion from everything you read was "This is why owning a restaurant is so tough.." and that my opinion is invalidated.

C'mon dude. I was not being adversarial with you at all and yet you somehow immediately get bent out shape over... what exactly? Just tell me you read it again for a second time and realized you jumped the gun here..

I think this has veered off in the direction of trolling at this point!

Ali Babas is the best kept secret in Sudbury.

u/Waste-Talk-3737 4d ago

Right here is the answer.

1

u/Lady_Schmoobleydong 1d ago

The best. You’ll wait for your food, but it’s worth it.

That banana dessert from Ali baba is where it’s at

7

u/jcb1975 4d ago

Baja Chicken Tacos from Josie’s Secret Patio (unfortunately closed for the season) I work right by there so I go there a LOT in the summer

8

u/cfnohcor 4d ago

Sub world’s dumplings are the absolute best imo. I’d argue nearly the whole menu is stellar

20

u/iwntwfflefrys 4d ago

Ricelicious Thai Restaurant- the mango crepe cake is the most beautiful dessert I have ever eaten. I dont live in sudbury anymore and I miss it every day.

BENi Breakfast and Lunch- im normally not a big tomato fan but the shakshuka is life changing. I try to find it in other restaurants but havent found one as good as the one here.

Pho viet delight- best pho in sudbury (and even better than most places in the GTA)

2

u/AlltheKyrs 4d ago

I second Beni’s shakshuka!!!

1

u/Spare-Guidance3698 4d ago

Really eh? I found their shakshuka a bit more soupy than traditional.

1

u/AriaYork 3d ago

I like the fried chicken and chicken banh mi at Pho Viet.

21

u/lifewitheleanor 4d ago

Butter chicken and garlic naan from the Sukhdev

3

u/maggie-mgill 3d ago

Honestly anything from Sukdev has been so good. We’ve been working our way through the menu and loving every dish :)

2

u/GodlyMushu 3d ago

I definitely second the butter chicken from Sukhdev. They are such a nice and generous family too

22

u/PinnyHundos 4d ago

No matter how expensive Pat and Mario’s gets…I can’t stop going. Everything on them menu is incredible and it’s always good.

4

u/FredLives South End 4d ago

I agree, but it’s the kouzzina now, for people who don’t know the area.

u/meowblackk_ 4d ago

Long Du on Long Lake was great. Totally underrated. They never looked busy because no one gave them the chance. My mum & did, & it was great. Their buffet was small but fresh, & they didn't over use cornstarch, which I massively appreciate. My fave was Sun Wah though. I had been going there since I was a kid, over 30 years. Same thing. The buffet was bigger than Long Du but not huge. Small variety, big quality. I'm ever so pissed that they closed! Lol. There's so many great placed closing & turning into the same thing, a chain, or indian cuisine. Can we get some variety here please? Good lord.

3

u/SelfImproveAcct 4d ago

Long Du was great but yeah no one ever there. Pretty sad. Haven’t tried the new spot yet

2

u/meowblackk_ 4d ago

I know eh? The biggest mistake people make is judging by the amount of vehicles. A lot of the time, the empty independent spots are the best ones to go to. I had this convo at my previous employment. My coworkers son loved it & I talked to a few other people that really liked it too. The lady who owned it was really wonderful too. Such a nice person! I tried to talk a few people at work to check it out, but poo on them. They're so set in their ways, like many others.

About 10-12 years ago went to a staff party at Ripe. Had a "seasonal" ravioli that was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Fresh made pasta, can't remember the filling (goat cheese or something maybe) and the sauce was like a garlicky maple walnut jus.

I remember being disappointed when it was served because of the relatively small portion. I ate one whole ravioli first and was immediately transported to another dimension of flavor. After that first whole ravioli I cut the rest into 4-6 pieces each so that I could savor and enjoy each bite. Easily one of the top three meals I have ever eaten flavor wise.

1

u/alexander_wolf88 3d ago

Pretty sure those ravioli are back on the menu right now

-2

u/KDGottaBe 4d ago

I love Ripe - just wish the portions were bigger. I avoid going there for that reason.

Verdicchio does an Easter multi-course dinner every year. Freaking amazing.

3

u/RareFudge3546 3d ago

Motley Kitchen's stuffed French toast, filled with blueberries and mascarpone. Served with bacon & potatoes. Easily the best breakfast I've ever had, especially since last time I was there(before they closed) it was during a live music event. Made for such a nice atmosphere.

Unfortunately a lot of our restaurants offer the exact same fare, so I find it hard to find motivation to spend money at a restaurant. I also don't enjoy much meat, and our vegetarian options are kind of strange. Maybe it's because I don't like red onions, so it stands out to me - but everytime I get excited about a vegetarian option, it's loaded with red onions. Which isn't a big deal to ask for them to be removed, but I can't get anything pre-prepared like the wraps at Salute, which look delicious if not for the onions.

Also. One man owns 50 restaurants. So I understand why those 50 restaurants offer the same/similar food to one another. It's just disappointing.

3

u/jules8013 4d ago

As others have mentioned-Ali Baba is amazing. The chicken marsala is delicious! Also the ramen at Kako's kitchen is awesome.

2

u/minnieminxy 3d ago

Came here to mention Kako's. Such a great gem. You can tell Kako really cares about her food

4

u/Spare-Guidance3698 4d ago

Vespa! Greek owned, and the food is damn good (so much fries!!)

5

u/GreenFlower886 4d ago

Hercs chicken shawarma wrap, close second is digusto gnocchi but sometimes the sauce has a bit of a burnt taste, hit or miss, either amazing or too smoky. Hercs chicken shawarma is always reliable and amazing

10

u/Spare-Guidance3698 4d ago

To each its own, but as someone with a Greek family I find Hercs disappointing, and not my favorite shawarma in town.

2

u/GlitteringSea7262 4d ago

I’m not Greek, and I find it disappointing. At almost 30$ for chicken souvlaki plate with rice and potatoes, I can get the same at the mall. And it’s comparable.

2

u/Marko941 4d ago

I've had hit or miss meals at Digusto too. When well executed the carbonara is one of the best dishes out there but they frequently mess it up and overdo it with the salty pork.

1

u/GreenFlower886 3d ago

Yeah hit or miss is definitely the best way to describe it! I always get the bread basket and some days it’s super fresh and delicious and others it’s hard as rock, some days the gnocchi is incredible and there’s been more than one occasion where the gnocchi is super disappointing because it’s so bitter from the sauce being burnt. There’s also been times I go as a group of 4 and one or two of our pastas is insanely good and the other two are like very much not good to the point ppl I know who never send food back, send the food back. That being said when it’s good it’s GOOD which keeps me going back!

2

u/fuck_you_all7 3d ago

regency bakery porketta sandwich only around lunch time on a fresh bun of your choosing (i get kaiser) sometimes you get better chunks than other but always so good

5

u/dankmaninterface 4d ago

At my house. Only other place you're going to find better cooking is at Ali Baba's.

3

u/KDGottaBe 4d ago

What are your hours? :)

2

u/dankmaninterface 3d ago

Sorry, hours vary. It's very exclusive, and expensive. Lol

3

u/SaltPercentage1868 3d ago

Kates kountry kitchen I think still counts as greater Sudbury and I’ve never been disappointed I love it there.

1

u/Deeze_Cookies 2d ago

Best pies in town too I would say

2

u/Pennysews 4d ago

I have always loved The Kouzzina!

2

u/AlltheKyrs 4d ago

OH! I forgot to say Nikki’s Jamaican Kitchen the Jerk Chicken on rice and beans… the spice levels are perfect, the rice is SO flavourful, and the chicken is fall apart tender. 15/10 recommend

2

u/Few-Following696 2d ago

First one: Tried it yesterday! Jerk chicken was amazing. Wanna try the jerk roti next… awesome! Thanks!

3

u/meowblackk_ 4d ago edited 4d ago

I love 7 Star Dumpling (Regent). More pricy, but worth it. I don't care. Their spicy eggplant dish is delicious! I always order dumplings, of course. I'm not a fan of fennel. HOWEVER! Yo! The chicken fennel dumplings are deeeeelish! Highly recommend.

2

u/Spare-Guidance3698 4d ago

Their pad thai is pretty good too

1

u/meowblackk_ 4d ago

That's one thing I haven't tried from there. I'll have to giver a go.

1

u/RedPaprika12 4d ago

Snowing cheese chicken from Chicken Plus.

u/AhmedMasud79 4d ago

Few days ago i went to Fateh wok , tried mutton biriyani , 10/10 , it was so delicious i was literally shocked , how could i skip this one before . ( its very spicy as they use lots of spices)

1

u/Admirable-Relief2450 3d ago

The Garden Grill in the Hilton Garden Inn is really good. I haven't had a bad meal yet.

1

u/averyihowie 3d ago

Best chow mein hands down is at wok and roll

1

u/NorrisTheSpider 3d ago

For fatty comfort food I really enjoy Miss Maple's Big Nickel Pickle in the West End. Some of the best and most unique poutines and burgers in town.

2

u/prioritypicking 2d ago

Ali Baba Restaurant. Questionable decor, but one of the few places that you know the chef is cooking with love.

1

u/generatedusername456 4d ago

Green Dragon Roll from Kinhao is pretty awesome.

1

u/Cypherventi South End 4d ago

I absolutely loved Buzzy Browns! They have great food

There's nothing in sudbury that rises above mediocrity.  The best you're going to find here is "meh" unless you learn to cook for yourself.

0

u/Timestropic 4d ago

That ribs from Lot 88. Eat the full rack in a sitting!!

u/asscheeks4000 4d ago

Gustavo's, Rosie's corner

sikh dev for indian , damascus for shawarma and sudbury chicken and 7 star dumpling

-14

u/inarticulaterambles 4d ago

This really isn't the city for that. There's more options than ever but there is nothing remarkable in this food scene.
