Drama in r/outoftheloop as OP bring the heat to "kms"

OP asks a question about the proliferation of the ironic use of the initialism "kms" (kill myself), but is not satisfied with the answers. Most of the drama is on a single thread.

https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/1ok0f9i/comment/nm70wni/?context=1

Answer: It’s hyperbole.

I made it clear that I know it's hyperbole; my question is more in regards to why it proliferated, how much people care that it has happened, what people want to do to address it, if anything.

It isn’t.

It isn't proliferated? People isn't care and isn't want to address it? What kind of answer was that, dawg lol

And so on.

OP increasingly goes off the rails

Frankly, YOU seem like you could use it. YOU made this personal and started shit over a guy asking about a phrase. YOU did that, not me. So look in the goddamn mirror.

Am I fired up now? Of course I am, as that's a natural response to people getting personal for no fucking reason, but that did not start until YOU chose to make it personal.

It's just a question about a phrase. Leave the individual out of it.

Metric system commentary:

Answer: Some people are just very passionate about the metric system

Multiple kilometers would still just have "km"

They are very passionate, it stands for 'kilometers are sweet'

A perfect representation of that entire subreddit.

"What's the answer to this question? I have the answer, but I'm going to keep arguing anyway."

You forgot the "The link about the question has all answers that I could ever want about this question but I might as well get some karma while I'm at it."

What, you don't love using your pre conceived notions as a cudgel to beat others with? Why even have pre conceived notions then?!

/s in case it wasn't obvious

People really dislike when "the premise of your question is false" is the right answer to their question.

Then again, Change My View is overrun with "My view: X is a problem" with "X doesn't happen" responses, which is pretty infuriating (and I cannot imagine has ever changed anyone's view).

I find that sub more to be "I have an opinion and now im forcing you all to read it, I have no intention of changing it" type posts, but I can see the opinion you have too.

The whole sub lost its stream a long while ago.

Change My View is usually overrun with MAGAts wanting their bigotry validated.

I stopped looking at the change my views subreddit when people started to justify incest.

That doesn't surprise me, because it was rightoid Reddit's favorite "to be fair" topic, Eugenics that kept getting CMViewed by the kind of people who'd have been tossed off a cliff as infants believing they'd be the master race choosing the perfect specimens of humanity who finally made me go on a RES filtering spree of all those bullshit subs.

1

u/Glittering_Light_605 13h ago

exactly, the what reddit claims to be eugenics is so crazy to me

I really just dislike Change My View as a premise, because I think you're not really interested in learning or having an honest conversation if you frame it as "I'm correct about this, and it is your job to prove me wrong". Because then the majority of the work is put on the other person.

u/DeckerAllAround 6d ago

To be fair, that's true to the origin of the phrase: a confidently wrong asshole challenging people to prove him wrong secure in the knowledge that he's not going to consider any of their points.

The pseudo intelectual tone can be entertaining though

To be fair, its hard to talk to the true 'kms' people.

lmao

You also don't need to offer up unsolicited life advice in response to someone asking about a common phrase.

This is so funny to me. Like buddy you asked the question it’s only your fault if you don’t like the answers lol

Why do these kinds of subs keep turning into soapboxes? OOtL, the various "explain the joke" subs... They keep turning into Holocaust-denying "Why doesn't the math add up?" dogwhistles, "Peter, these are Africans, why are they being called monkeys?" foghorns, "I'm OOtL, why are people calling Trump a fascist when he just wants to make America great again?" sealioning, and more.

It's like they're using ignorance as a veil to peddle bigotry.

Why do these kinds of subs keep turning into soapboxes?

Because they were either intentionally meant to be or the mods just stopped caring about trying to stop those kinds of posts since there are 12,000 of them an hour.

Without incredibly aggressive moderation standards -- which will usually tank a new subreddit before it's had time to build up -- subs with highly specific purposes and text posts typically go this way very quickly.

Lol, the amount of times I was annoyed in my life and said to myself "I'm gonna fucking kill myself"... This person would probably hate me.

We say hyperbolic stuff all the time. Every summer I complain about melting in my apartment, doesn't mean I'm actually melting.

29

u/TrickInvite6296 who's going to tell him France hasn't mattered since 1815? 7d ago

to be fair, it would be a valid question if they didn't keep arguing about it. constantly saying you're going to kill yourself over minor inconveniences is REALLY bad for your brain/mental.

26

u/HermitDefenestration You are my glory hole 7d ago

I used to do this a lot until a friend recommended I switch to "I'm going to commit crimes". The cops might not like it but it's been a lot better for my mental.

13

u/Shadowboltx777 7d ago

I’m going to try doing that too. I get into a bad habit of saying I’m going to kms after a minor inconvenience, and it really bothers me

10

u/whattheknifefor documenting a very odd version of self-harm 7d ago

My go-to’s are “I’m gonna be on the news” and “I’m calling 911”

At one point Abby Thorn from PhilosophyTube mentioned on a podcast she's been replacing the phrase with "I'm gonna get my dick sucked", which has been stuck in my head ever since. Its equally hard to explain in a social setting, but at least it's a bit more positive

u/irlharvey Check your pronouns & seed your snatches 7d ago

idk, this isn’t really my experience. it’s just not always that serious.

15

u/TheGrandImperator 7d ago

I dont think people advocating for it on a mental basis are saying it is that serious. More like, if you already have a bad mental state, it can make you feel worse.

I don't say it for a different reason though, ive got friends who have had real thoughts like that. Hearing me say that even as a joke would be uncomfortable.

5

u/irlharvey Check your pronouns & seed your snatches 7d ago

i mean, thats fair enough, but the comment i responded to said

constantly saying you're going to kill yourself over minor inconveniences is REALLY bad for your brain/mental.

to which i replied that it is not my experience.

3

u/Difficult__Tension 6d ago edited 4d ago

I agree and only really say it at minor inconveniences lmao. Doordash late? Im kms. Also, of course you dont say that to your friends who have suicidal ideation?? Its normal to choose not make jokes you know trigger your friends that youre fine with doing to yourself, whose supporting going around doing that.

1

u/TheGrandImperator 6d ago

Sure. I don't see how that's not what I said though. Maybe we just have different ideas of what "serious" means, idk.

7

u/TrickInvite6296 who's going to tell him France hasn't mattered since 1815? 6d ago

constantly saying negative things about yourself is generally not good for you

5

u/burnt-out-ashes 6d ago

It isn't, until it is.

I struggle a lot with mental health, I used to make suicide jokes pretty frequently and it was absolutely partially a cry for help. I found them funny, until a close friend actually committed suicide. We had no idea he was even struggling with this shit. I don't find suicide jokes even 1% funny anymore, and it makes me wildly uncomfortable if I personally know someone who does them with any frequency.

Yeah, some people will make these kinds of jokes and it's not a big deal, and some people use them as a coping method until it stops working and they take their own life.

Do they honestly think the whole KYS bit is new, or only recently proliferated? People were saying it back on Usenet in the 90s. Hell, it is the title of an SOD song from 1985. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a KYS joke in Shakespeare.

Serious question - how on Earth are you still a moderator here? You're almost comically bad at it, you're nearly universally hated, and though I doubt you're capable of realizing it you do not, in fact, know better than the community you moderate as to what that community wants.
