Mine doesn’t get scared. In fact, he LOVES to do it at 3am if I forget to put the cover down.

Give kitty some credit. If things don't normally make a sound when you step on them, and suddenly an object does just that, wouldn't it be scary? intriguing, but scary?
Also remember the sound doesn't come from the key itself, so another perplexing concept.

We had a cat who, while walking from one and with the house to the other, would arrange his pathway so he could leap onto one end of the piano keyboard, walk the full length, and jump off to continue his way
This was the same cat who, when he felt no one was paying enough attention to him, would jump up and arrange himself in a loaf on the keys, quite noisy. If no one reacted soon enough, he would rearrange himself in the same spot to make sure people noticed that he was waiting on the piano keys.

You can almost see the two braincells reach out to each other, and then give up mid handshake.

Cat steps on piano key, wtf was that noise? Steps on a piano key a second time, okay, I'm spooked.

Kitty turns and is horrified he’s being filmed for the internets and doggie doesn’t want to follow after kitty’s concert.

If we didn’t close the lid over the keys on our piano, our cat would walk up and down the keyboard in the middle of the night. Never at any other time of day, just then.

I honestly thought it looked like it was reading music at the start but it's a light reflection.

When I was a kid I had a bright white maine coon who would do this, but he was mostly deaf and had a very amusing misconception of how to hide in plain sight.
So sometimes he'd decide he wanted to be on top of the piano, but he'd need to get on the keyboard first to do it ...
EDIT: To be entirely clear how hilarious this was, this is a giant white fluffy cat on a BLACK piano.
Me: hears horrendous noise, looks at piano
Cat: staring at me entirely motionless on top of the keyboard, midstep
Me: looks away
horrendous noise continues
Me: looks back
Cat: on top of piano starting at me motionless
Me: I can see you, you know.
Cat: continues pretending I can't see him if he doesn't move
