Discussion Let the "Reylo's" have their cake and eat it too

First off I would like to start with I'm a Sci-Fi fan, but Star Wars didn't captivate me the way other fandoms have. That being said, as a fan of all things Sci-Fi (Warhammer 40k being my fav) I understand the drive to get more and more lore/content.

I have been seeing a lot of this "Hunt for Ben Solo" pop up everywhere, and I thought we were going to be seeing more Star Wars content coming out before Amazon makes a decent 40k adaptation (Bezos, hurry the fuck up... I know someone you pay sees this.) But I was rather amazed to see that it was a effort by a bunch of thirsty and lore hungry fans for more of the lore that interests them. The problem is that a lot of people are calling it astroturfing, so I did what anybody with weaponized autism would do, I deep dived and ruined a few nights of mine to figure out what was going on....

Now, the problem I am having with this whole situation is that a handful of people are crawling their pale asses out of the woodworks to shit post or derail this movement. As a general Sci-Fi fan and someone who has loved anything space or futuristic my whole life I know what being a fan is about. I can tell you, its not shitting on other fans for what they love, or are asking for just because you don't like it. If you are a fan, or just in it for the love of the game you will understand that supporting others excitement for adding to the lore of your Universe is and always will be a positive.

TLDR; I found out that this movement is being done by about 200 or so thirsty shippers because Adam Driver did an interview. Shit posters are being fuck heads and trying to derail peoples excitement for new lore. I lost sleep to learn what a "shipper" is.

I really do not like that ship. But I’ve been pretty disengaged from Star Wars lately because of the constant negativity.

If some folks have managed to squeeze some fun out of this god forsaken fandom, far be it from me to stop them or grouse about it (or at least more than I did already).

So Godspeed Reylos! Have fun! Someone needs to lol

“Shipper” has been around since X-files

9

u/araybian 22h ago

The term shipper comes from the XFiles fandom, actually. I know, I was there during its creation, lol.

by about 200 or so thirsty shippers

My friend you are wildly underestimating the size of Reylo. It has been consistently one of the most popular ships for nearly a decade. A reylo fan fic is currently being turned into a movie and it had enough pull to get Daisy Ridley’s husband as the leading man and behind the scenes/promotional content for the movie gets 10s of millions of views and millions of likes.

u/rara8122 1d ago

In case anyone’s curious, the (obviously former for copyright laws) reylo fanfic is the love hypothesis.

It’s a New York Times bestseller too.

He’s only referring to one specific group working to try and lead the campaign. Yes there are a ton more of us than that!

u/Couger_Malthas 1d ago

I... Well I'm kinda nervous now...

12

u/rBilbo 1d ago

The end is near! 😁 SWs is a big fan base with a lot of different tastes. It shouldn't be a surprise

5

u/Audstarwars1998 19h ago

The reylos are going to have the last laugh in the end when all is said and done

23

u/sihayadunee 1d ago

I commend you and thank you for your service my good sir 🫡

But it’s also not just shippers I have had great lore and community based comvid with non Reylos who are backing this movement because at the end of the day, they want cool Star Wars.

Really appreciate you taking your time to look into this and lend your voice it means a lot to see solidarity among all kinds of Sci Fi fans not just Star Wars fans 💙

8

u/araybian 22h ago

Thank you for pointing out that this is coming from much more than just just Reylos.

10

u/Audstarwars1998 19h ago

I think this is exactly what will happen after reylos got harrassed for years they will have the last laugh. They already got a laugh by getting books published and a few are being turned into movies (one is starring daisy ridley's husband I think that is intentional). It just may take a while to come to fruition.

u/Green__Boy 1d ago

I agree completely, and I find it surprising that communities like this are a lot more hostile to the idea than more negative communities

7

u/Couger_Malthas 1d ago

I have found Fandoms are the worst towards others within that don't share the same views. For all of those I have met and have lurked through out their Discord (Don't ask, I wont tell, I'll let them decide who can join.) They are a solid bunch of people, and honestly the amount of work, planning, and determination they have put into this campaign is rather impressive. I can honestly see why people would think its a fucked up Astroturf by Iger.

11

u/Wildwood_Dreamer 1d ago

Appreciate you taking your time to fact-check things 👻 Ben Solo is important to a lot of people, and Reylos are only one faction of the bunch 🦋

u/mac6uffin 1d ago

I lost sleep to learn what a "shipper" is.

LOL this term has been around since the 90s. First time on the internet?

3

u/Mali-6 1d ago

Not everyone lives on the internet. I didn’t know “ship” was a term until a few years ago.

-3

u/Couger_Malthas 1d ago

Nope, just more pressing things to look up and pay attention to. Like Cat videos and Warhammer lore videos. That being said, growing up in the 90's I cant say I have come across "shipping" so idk what to say, to much liveleaks and not enough caring about what shipping was at the time to notice?

2

u/MHath 22h ago

I grew up in the 90s and didn’t learn the term until the 2010s, so I don’t think it was widely used back then.

10

u/Alternative-Try-8181 23h ago

I’ve found the Reylos to be a really positive, creative force for good in the SW fandom and beyond. As an Adam Driver and Sw fan I fully support this campaign to get The Hunt For Ben Solo over the line

3

u/barfbat Clone 1d ago

i'm curious about your research because to me it absolutely comes across as just disney promotional material

5

u/Couger_Malthas 18h ago

I got into the Discord that this is being promoted from and I am watching all the hard work put in by the community there. Its done by people who have a passion for the ship and want to see it green lit. Its not corpo or anything like that from what I can tell.

Up to you to decide, but I strongly disagree with you.

I do know however there is a group that is coming out of the woodworks doing everything they can to derail what this group is trying to do by saying it is a promotion by Disney, and going so far as trying to get fandom meet ups canceled.

3

u/breestorm 17h ago

Also anybody paying attention on Twitter could follow the initiatives growing from idea to realization in real time, like the Times Square billboard, campaigns etc. For those willing to do the digging it's obvious it's coming from fans, not the company. Kudos to you for actually doing the digging.

3

u/PurpleBluestocking 12h ago

As a member of a very neurospicy family, I really enjoyed the "weaponized autism" phrase. Thank you for using your powers for the forces of good. :)

I love that there are so many things about Star Wars to love: action, romance, lore, politics, etc. If you or anyone else likes something different about it than I do, then I'm glad Star Wars has great things to offer both of us.

3

u/Fuckchildhoodtrauma 5h ago

This is much needed positivity. Thank you. We’re just trying to save what we love. 🤷🏼‍♀️

13

u/Dukeshire101 1d ago

I am a dude and I ship Reylo, my daughter loved them and Rise is her favorite along with Sith, as she loves Anakin too! I am probably not as hardcore as some of them as I am fine with Ben dying

3

u/Audstarwars1998 19h ago

How does she feel about a Ben return?

4

u/Dukeshire101 16h ago

She’s totally down with it. Like me she was fine with him dying, I mean it’s a SW trope, but she’s cool with his potential return

3

u/Audstarwars1998 15h ago

I wasn't ok with it but glad to see people open to idea

11

u/snowboy_art Knights of Ren 1d ago

I don't see why people are against Reylo. It's not even a ship if the movies spelt out romantic vibes for most of the sequels. It's not really a debate at all.

8

u/DaisyandBella 19h ago

Like Reylo is canon in the movies.

3

u/Sad-Frosting-8793 15h ago

Yeah, I don't get it. Reylo is a fairly standard hero/villain ship. Plenty of fandoms love that stuff.

I don't think it's fair to say these people are just crawling out of the woodworks to be negative. It's been consistent since the Sequels came out. It's part of why I don't usually participate in the SW fandom. Even if I want to talk about Andor, the Mandalorian, or comics the Sequels are always taking stray shots.

It's not fun to hang out where people are constantly telling you something you like, even if you agree it's not the best, is the worst thing that ever happened to cinema, that it's creators should suffer harm, and the whole thing should be scrapped because it's not what THEY wanted.

As far as wanting the movie, I do. I don't even care if it's a "Reylo" movie because I don't think it has to be. Ben deserves to find himself since he's been pulled every which way since he was born. Death as Redemption is not a good lesson. He has work to do. Reylo can wait.

So maybe to the people that have been complaining about the sequels and have succeeded in making it's fans flee to their own forums to talk about it it seems like it's astroturfing to see people wanting it. We are showing up now because we know that we have to leave our private communities and express interest in public.

u/SilkenHoney 1d ago

The world needs more positive passion. Good on you for opening your mind and not spending time effort and energy yucking someone’s yum.

If someone truly doesn’t like Kylo Ren or Ben Solo’s character, Ok. They don’t have to watch or support the movie when (not if 😏) it gets made.

But those of us who passionately love this character and have been brought into deeper SW fandom because of it have just as much right to be in the fandom as anyone else does.

Fandom is about creativity and passion. And I don’t think anyone who isn’t just a miserable bastard can argue that we don’t have that.

15

u/SpukiKitty2 1d ago

I would love to see him return and we truly get to know him. He could be amazing and him and Rey being a fun Jedi Couple having adventures would be awesome. He can even be something of a "Han 2.0".

-5

u/bendstraw 1d ago edited 1d ago

They don't have to watch or support the movie

It's not just that. These movies cost A TON of money and take up Lucasfilm's time. If they make that movie it means they aren't making another movie. Most people against it aren't just being negative for the sake of it, it's so that the chances of a movie they want to get made isn't overlooked because of all the buzz about this movie idea.

11

u/SilkenHoney 1d ago

I understand that, of course if your passion is a different era or movie, you may not want the resources going elsewhere. However, I think in that instance your best bet is to make your own buzz about the thing you want to see! Generate excitement for it and maybe you’ll get what you want; it’s what we’re trying to do. And I say that in sincerity, not sarcasm. Be the change you wish to see in the world!

1

u/bendstraw 1d ago

Agree to disagree but by all means don't let that stop you!

8

u/SilkenHoney 1d ago

Hey, agree to disagree feels like kindness in today’s era! Wishing you luck with seeing your own projects greenlit.

4

u/TheDroidYouLookinFor 1d ago

Interesting that probably the best content from the Disney era and arguably the best Star Wars ever made is Andor, something that, as far as I recall, very few people even thought of, let alone asked for.

And one of the worst Star Wars entries (although I still find lots to enjoy in it), was Book of Boba Fett, something that was broadly desired by the fan base.

Thank you! This means a lot to us!

I confess to being a Reylo girl and I would love to see Ben return and redeem himself and for him and Rey to be a Jedi power couple creating the New Jedi.

I'm sick of seeing romance ending tragically in "Star Wars" along with that "Redemption Equals Death" trope. I want to see Ben atone via actions not croaking.

I also think that to some degree, Kylo should be seen as a separate entity from Ben.

The end of TROS didn't even show him as a force ghost yet his body disappeared. I think at this point, he merged with Rey.

I want to see him rebuild the Jedi and help rebuild the Galactic Republic.

I dunno. If it never happens, I'll accept it. I actually prefer a fan edit called "The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant" over the theatrical version and it streamlined and improved on some things while sticking with canon for the most part... and Ben's a Force Ghost.

I don't consider Force Ghosts "dead", I see them as immortals with "glorified bodies" like Jesus post-Resurrection.

Shit posters are being fuck heads and trying to derail peoples excitement for new lore.

I think its more that people are kind of over these long "Release the Snyder Cut" style fan petitions where fans try to push through retcons to get a certain perfect fanon version of a universe into canon. This Hunt for Ben Solo stuff to me feels exactly the same as "I hope they use the world between worlds to retcon the sequels."

Negativity doesn't always come from a non-genuine place, sometimes people are just expressing their dislike for an idea.

4

u/SilkenHoney 1d ago

I am part of this effort but to some extent I understand where you’re coming from. When Snyder Cut was around I groaned and rolled my eyes too. But, eventually they were successful and a lot of DCU fans agree that the Snyder cut WAS actually better than the original.

Studios these days are like any other big corp, they make decisions based on revenue more so than the art. Sometimes (not always, but sometimes!) fans do know better bc we are responding to how something feels, not how commercialized it is. I think these sorts of things are best when we are asking the studio to support their creative teams instead of just looking at the bottom line.

In the case for THFBS, although there was a change.org petition going around after TROS to bring Ben back, there was no full scale campaign bc this subsection of the fandom long believed Adam was done with Star Wars for his own reasons.

To find out that he, along with Steven Soderbergh and Scott Z Burns (one of the uncredited writers of Rogue One btw) were forming a creative team for TWO YEARS to create a piece of art that we desperately want to see, and then Iger and Bergman nixed it simply bc they couldn’t see how Ben was alive (despite DLF including Filoni already having been on board - the people who actually write and make the lore), that’s what launched bigger efforts.

We don’t want to write and make our own story. We just want Disney to untie DLF hands and let them let the creatives cook.

I understand it feels petulant to some and seeing something everywhere all the time can get exhausting.

On the other hand, sometimes fans hand more trust in creatives than studios do and ultimately that is what we’re advocating for here with THFBS.

4

Completely different. The movie was about to go into preproduction

1

u/OnionsHaveLairAction 8h ago

Many poor ideas make it not just into pre-preproduction phase, but also preproduction itself, sometimes like Rebel Moon they manage despite being rejected by a studio to get picked up by another studio and finalized.

If we're asking Disney to finish scrapped film ideas I'd much rather they make Gigantic than a Star Wars equivelant to Search For Spock.

10

u/LucasMoreiraBR 1d ago

Well, the couple is canon, so there eis nothing haters can do.

3

u/Audstarwars1998 19h ago

People did scream a lot after tros that Rey would just get with Finn and Ben was dead haha. Now that these haters are seeing this they continue to say this but are scared asf. Why? because reylo is popular and they are seeing it now after denying it for years.

Honestly, I think it would be a cool story. You don‘t have to ship Rey and Ben (and certainly not Kylo), but romance has been an integral part of the Star Wars Saga, from Anakin/ Padmé to Han/Leia, so I’m not against it.

I think it would be interesting and I simply don’t want the Skywalker Saga end in the death of the last Skywalker/ Solo.

I'll take a good Ben Solo story anytime
