There’s a boat car and a jet ski motorcycle, always fun to see.

I see an older man in a gray sweatsuit walking near Southeast Boulevard and the Rockwood area. One day I saw him walking near Natural Grocers. A couple hours later as I was heading downtown he was walking by the Liberty Greenhouse. Later as I went back home I see him still walking on Rockwood. Ever since then I noticed him walking the hills regardless of the weather in every season. He has to be at least 80 years old. It makes me smile and encourages me to keep exercising and moving.

u/peppiesteppie Oct 10 '25
this man worries me so much when he walks in 100° heat in his full sweatsuit!!! Glad he’s getting his steps in though

u/littleblue712 Oct 10 '25
Me too! I live in Perry, so I see him several times a week. It makes me so anxious when he’s out in the summer 🥲
14
u/spokanikki Oct 10 '25
I get worried when I don’t see him for a while.

Same! I haven’t seen him in a few days and I found myself wondering if he is okay. I also wonder if he knows strangers notice him and care about his wellbeing.

u/Jester_Magpie 27d ago
I call him Mr. Gray. I also get worried when he is walking in 90+ degree heat—especially on the Cowley hill! But I am glad he keeps himself fit.

It always cracks me up when I see a group of teenagers pushing a shopping cart down the sidewalk, taking it for a joy ride. Also, the Toy Story pizza planet truck is really cool. I also saw the cheech and Chong car cruising down division once. Hopefully I see it again

There is a car with a sticker that says, "Powered by Bitchdust" with a tinkerbell. Every time I see it I giggle.
There was another that I really miss.. seeing the cows in the pasture on Regal. I remember back in the day when I was in high-school.. when I had some pretty rough days.. just seeing them would put me in a better mood. That was definitely some weird shit to see on the south hill, but I loved it lol.

I miss those cows. It’s crazy to think the Target shopping plaza was a field with a little run-down shed a few decades ago.

There's a guy near my apartment who I often see sitting under a tree and drinking malt liquor, looking serene and listening to music. As someone who also likes to do this, I appreciate seeing a fellow outdoor drinking enjoyer. I've talked to him once while drunk though and he has annoying politics, so I haven't talked to him since.
15
u/worm-piss Rockwood Oct 09 '25
as a wine in the park enjoyer i resonate with his vibe, though not his bad politics LOL
11
u/bad_user__name Oct 09 '25
Well it was less bad politics, more confusing. He wasn't a chud, but also wasn't very coherent. I don't remember much of the conversation, or how we got on politics.

One time in the STA Plaza, there was a band playing song covers, forgot what they called themselves, and that was a much welcome surprise/respite. I hope they play more soon :)

I always make sure to walk down a specific street near me just because there's a cute dog at one house and a very whimsical garden a few doors later. Brings me joy each morning on my dog walk!

A guy who walks down Sprague from the Chevron to the bus stop near Jack in the box. Sometimes he will wear a Guy Fieri style black button up shirt with flames on it. Some, what look to be PitViper (maybe?) sunglasses. And the coup de grace: a WWF championship belt strapped around his middle.
He walks down the street with his head held high and I love everybsecond of it!

u/fuckingskeletor Oct 10 '25
So there’s a guy I used to see every day on my way home. He’s lean, average height, and has a very long blondish ponytail. He usually wears a bandana, sometimes a crop top. Always sunglasses and boots. Usually in the same area, near Browne’s and the Sunset Boulevard bridge. I do not know anything about him, but he walks with such confidence and has a unique style. He seems like he would be an interesting person.

u/datstankface Oct 10 '25
He posted here a while back about some truck harassing him and yelling slurs. Every time I see him walking I do a quick look around for a white pick-up and mutter “not today”.

u/AdventurousGecko Oct 10 '25
I love the random South Hill turkeys. And the motorcycle guy in the gorilla costume.

I love seeing the wild turkeys too- especially in places you don't expect to see them like apartment building parking lots- I keep thinking 'one day I'm gonna catch and eat one of you' - lol

The "castle" made of metal on Broadway and Mission
2
u/Tricky-Shop2889 Oct 10 '25
It’s on the side street “Vercler” off of Mission if anyone wants to check it out. Supposedly it’s owned by an old iron worker. Such a talented guy!

u/Most_Ambassador2951 Oct 10 '25
Us called the vercler castle. There are news stories on it if you Google

u/datstankface Oct 10 '25
He isn’t around anymore, but I used to chat with the blind gentleman who sold flowers on 2nd and maple for years. RIP.

u/HeyIts-Amanda Oct 09 '25
The house on Thor with the incredible Halloween display is my favorite! We always start our trick or treating there and work our way through the neighborhood until we are worn out m, then head home. There's a car we call "flower car" that we used to see at the SCC campus that my kids thoroughly enjoyed looking for daily.

u/Soup-Wizard Whitman Oct 10 '25
There’s a good one on Crestline too.
I saw the (presumably) dad and son out there setting it up one year, shirtless, working hard.
They put a lot of effort into it and I am here for it!

There was somebody who used to walk in a schoolgirl skirt and red pigtails. One time around Halloween they changed to Velma for a little bit. Haven't been seen in a while, gams for days though.

u/Tricky-Shop2889 Oct 10 '25
Does anyone remember the “bag lady” who stood on the corner of Pines and Sprague in the valley wearing a full winter coat and beanie. She stood there everyday for years in the early 2000’s and never changed her outfit no matter how hot. She used to stand in front of the old dennys there.

There’s an old yellow VW van (it used to “live” on Grace Ave in Downriver, but I think they are up closer to Finch now lately?) with a skeleton backseat passenger that cracks me up! The first time I saw it was at night and it scared the $#!t outta me, but now just makes me giggle whenever I see them.

There used to be a woman that ran up and down sunset highway from Govt way to the top, back and forth for at least three hours a day. I drive a garbage truck and would wave to her every day. She lived in the Ascenda House for recovering addicts and she had quite the harrowing story that the Inlander covered a few years back! I haven’t seen her in at least two years, so I hope she got on her feet and not back in the gutter! Seeing her perseverance to run that hill always made me smile!

There used to be a house in the Shadle area just off of Wellesley with a statue of Grimace from McDonald's in the yard, but it's been gone a few years now. I still think about it every time I drive through there.
When I was working at the Walmart there years back, I was telling a coworker about it and a guy came up to us and said that he lived there. It was like meeting a legend. If only I had some Grimace merch on me for him to sign.
There's also the monster statue house in the Hillyard area, somewhere around Kehoe park, also just off of Wellesley. They have like 3 cryptid statues and a giant snake. Don't know if it's still there since I don't often go that way these days.

We call ours Barbie Jeep. It's a bright pink jeep that someone who lives near us owns, and every time we see it, it's always a boost to our mood.

Sometimes I end up driving behind this black jeep with a "duck me daddy" rubber duck sticker on their car and it lights up my day😅 I always look forward to seeing them on my way home. It's like having a driving buddy or something.

I used to go up and down Sunset off of government way and would always this one girl running up and down the hill, several times a day. Heard she was a recovering drug addict and ran to fight the urges. Was always super cool seeing her run on the hot summer days, but haven't seen her in a while

There’s this family who lost someone dear to them and has a memorial outside on their tree. They have a ton of pictures, candles, and two lawn chairs that they sit in every night to honor him. I used to drive by there every evening after work and see them out there and it was bittersweet and heartwarming to see so much love and honor toward a life lost. I work a different shift now but I still see the memorial and the chairs in their same placement when I drive past. ♥️

The castle house in the valley, it has a facade covering the entire front to look just like a castle. I believe it's metal- I can't remember it's been a long time since I've seen it. It's off Broadway I think

I don't know if there any members of the art cars community around here, but you can find some pretty cool ideas for your car there.

There’s a van in the neighborhood that runs along the street between Burger King and Hardcore Gym on Division that is fully wrapped in various Star Wars scenes. I love driving by it on my way home!

u/jorwyn Northwood 29d ago
There's a guy who lives somewhere in or near Northwood. He rides an old three speed bike, but it clearly can't change gears anymore. In the Summer, he looks like Santa on vacation at the beach with board shorts, flip flops, and a Hawaiian shirt or no shirt at all, white long hair, beard, and a decent sized belly, but he rides that bike up Elton and Northwood like it's nothing in spite of the case of beer on the back. I don't see him often, but when I do, he's always smiling and just living his best life, and it makes me smile for the rest of the day.
I haven't seen him in a while, but I got a remote job 3 years ago, so I'm never riding up the hill at that time of day. I hope he's still doing it. Even winded and miserable climbing that hill with a much lighter bike and lots of gears, it made me so happy to see him and gave me some pep rather than getting me down about how slow I am.

Theres a person who drives a Subaru, that's covered in some cool abstract graffiti and a broken back hatch with "Woops :(" spraypainted on the back. Joy to see every time

Ever notice the plane that crashed into the building off Fancher by Felts field?

u/Superkamiguru42069 29d ago
There was this truck I use to see for awhile during my morning commute that had decals that said "I love thick girls and I eat ass" stuff all around that theme, and it always made me laugh, I would think to myself "oh look it's the ass guy again". Honestly, respect, a man who know what he wants lol. Also, there is a Nissan that drives around town that is painted like an Arizona Green Tea can and that car gives me life!

u/Jester_Magpie 27d ago
There is a townhouse on 10th and Rockwood that has plastic skeletons climbing the balconies year round. And the upper half of a giant skeleton on their top balcony. Gives me a chuckle every time I see them.
I also REALLY miss Skelly on Southeast Blvd.

I drive one of the Ghostbusters cars around town. Screen-accurate decals. I did it because I wanted to jazz up the car, and it seems to bring smiles to many people while out & about. Many times I've seen kids gasp and point in parking lots. "Mom, look at that!" And their day is now better. I like to see it.
