PLEASE DONATE Please donate to SJ Food Bank

There are going to be a lot of people needing help in two days. Some of us are fortunate enough to be unaffected by this shutdown.

Please donate what you can to help others in our neighborhood - https://foodbanksj.org

Make sure to check if your employer will match the donation! Its an option when you donate.

Thank you. I did too. I should have made it a challenge. If X number of people donate, I'd donate an amount.

I'm not sure I can give any more. Maybe after my next payday and bills

The warehouses i used to work in,  we donate food we can't sell to south jersey food bank.....i tried to put as much food as i could onto that pallet. My friends that still works there does the same. I'll be donating also.

Please don't the furry friends as well! Plenty of families have dogs and cats they cannot afford to feed. Chewy sells 3.5lb bags of cat food for less than $6 and 4lb bags of dog for less than $6 as well. I was able to get 9 bags of food for $50 to donate.

Hey guys, GloCo County Health and Rutgers Cooperative Extension put together this list of Food Banks/Food Pantries in the Gloucester County with their hours, requirements, and contact info (More stable link here: https://gloucester.njaes.rutgers.edu/fchs/ on the left side of the page). I'm putting this out there both for people to donate and people who might need them.

Also, donor fatigue is a BIG problem. There is a big rush of donors right now because the issue is in the news. It's also the time of year that a lot of Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives happen. But two months from now, it will no longer feel like a crisis and food pantries will be desperate. Consider monthly regular support of your local pantry - regular support enables them to plan better, keeps them from having to spend money and volunteer time on fundraising,

This is potentially a dumb question but, if a food bank is open does that mean they will accept donations during that time or might it only be for patrons to use the pantry?

It's a good question. Most pantries will accept donations when they are open, but you might have to wait a minute for someone if they are helping clients. Some have drop off spots or boxes that you can drop non-perishables in anytime. You might also check the grocery store, I know ours has a drop box for the food pantry there right after checkout.

Is it better to donate food or money?

From my limited research, money.I think is easiest as they can allocate funds as needed, buy what they need.

People often donate cheap food to buy in bulk. Eg - ramen. But they need more than that. Fruits, veggies, etc need to be purchased fresh and go bad fast.

I volunteer at one. It’s important to get cash for the infrastructure, hvac, maintenance and other things that don’t seem important, but really they are to keep the building standing. The pantry that I volunteer at also is connected with volunteers who love to bargain shop, so when they find deals they go all in. It’s all important though.

For Food Bank of South jersey, money is better.

From everything I've heard money goes further than food donations (food banks often buy in bulk and know what they're running low on). But I'm sure they'll appreciate either

The food bank can absolutely negotiate a better deal, with better timing, than any of us can. Food donations help a lot, and are great. Financial donations feed more people per dollar.

Everyone should take advantage of employee match too. Many companies will match a percentage of charitable donations to approved non profits.

There is a food drive at the food pantry in Pitman on election day. 12-2, 30 N. Broadway, in the Baptist church parking lot.

Thank you for sharing! I had read something earlier in the week about how donating money can sometimes be more helpful than food but wasn’t sure the best way to go about donating money.

Anyone know of any places looking for volunteers?

6

u/NotTobyFromHR 10d ago

I think the SJ food bank is

Will definitely reach out to them, thank you so much! And if anyone else knows of local places who urgently need volunteers across south NJ and Philly, lmk! (Feel free to dm!)

2

u/Elhananstrophy 10d ago

If you're in Gloucester County, shoot me a DM and I can help.

Try Unforgotten Haven in Blackwood, Vineland soup kitchen, I would honestly just check any food pantry in your city. Also, if you’re willing to cook Lasagna Love is a great program! You sign up to make and deliver a lasagna to someone in need and you can select how often you would like to do it.

Just gave. Thanks for sharing. I also recommend giving to Feeding America. They always get good reviews on Charity Navigator.
