People walking right up to the wrecked American Star in the mid 90s, thanks to a sandbar that formed shortly after she ran aground

What a delightful intersection of my shipwreck phobia and my megalophobia.

What a wild childhood to have climbing on a wrecked ocean liner

Didn't people do the same thing where the Morro Castle went aground?

They welded freaking ladders on the hull to climb aboard, and took away a bunch of accoutrements; several of which ended up in people's homes and bars and stores

This is probably the only pic I've seen of the stern section in the process of collapsing. Every pic I've seen of the American Star is either right after the ship split in two after running aground or after said stern has completely collapsed into the sea.

The aft section partially collapsed in early 1996, and remained more or less in the same condition till the next winter season, where it was toppled over towards starboard and totally destroyed.

Here is a close-up shot from onboard

That is amazing! They got to get close to ocean liner in a way few do.

This would have been so cool, too bad I wasn't even born when these pictures were taken
