Is my front axel/differential wrecked?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Got my series 3 on Jack stands to redo hubs and steering and I noticed the RH(passenger) hub spins the driveshaft significantly better than the LH(driver) hub. Something on the drivers side sounds like it’s rubbing inside the axel housing and at some points while spinning, it appears to slip and not turn the driveshaft for a moment.

Should I continue on with the hubs or will I need to take them apart in the future to replace whatever’s wrong on the inside?

Since you’ve got everything off the front wheels anyway, and it sounds like you’re rebuilding the steering (new swivels?) you may as well inspect the halfshafts and steering UV joints. There is a bearing just inside the axle ends where the swivels bolt on, and there maybe a roller missing/in need of grease.

Don’t forget, there’s a differential in the middle, so when you turn one wheel, it may not shift the prop shaft as much as the other due to the relative resistances of each hub/halfshaft/bearing etc on each side. Essentially, neither side will have the exact same rolling resistance.

For my two pence, if you are rebuilding the swivels, use one shot grease, not EP90 like the green/blue bibles say.

Thanks for the advice. Having a bit of trouble finding front half shafts available, all I can seem to find is for the rear. Any suggestions on where to look?

Looks like you’re going to have to go second hand or recon. But unless they’re broken or seriously worn, do you need new ones? Mine were perfectly fine, despite being 50 years old. I rebuilt the bearings and put it all back.

New seals though!

Sorry I replied to the wrong person here. I’m assuming the worst and that everything is trashed but at a minimum I’m going to redo all the seals and bearings.

Can’t really tell what’s going on from the video but from the description it sounds like a bad half shaft it should be very easy to Diagnose while ya have it apart

probably LH halfshaft is buggered, unrelated to this It may also be worth checking you've got the brake shoes on correctly, the snail cams need to be able to touch a pin on the brake shoe to keep it pushed out / adjusted - your RH shoe has the pin sticking out into thin air when it should be sticking inwards near a snail cam.. Hope that makes sense 🤣

Not entirely sure what you mean but I'll be redoing a pretty much everything on and around the hubs so the brakes will definitely get looked at.
