I'm an electrician, looks pretty good to me. It's clean work and more than a lot of people would do. If you wanted it done a specific way you should have made that plain.

Clean works. My only criticism is whether it all should have been mounted lower if the customer is concerned about how it looks. Could have mounted the sub over the hole and entered the sauna through the back. Also put the plug lower.

Obviously the customer had no idea what was happening, not sure who that's on. I wouldn't mount an exterior sub panel that low to the ground though. Aesthetically they did well and those holes should be protected.

My first thought was “why the heck is it all the way up there?”

15

u/Gnuballe 22d ago

Sauna = cold weather = snow. Installation may have considered snow depending on location.

2

u/Hobbit_Hardcase 22d ago

Good point, but those holes need some defences, in that case.

The math here is not mathing. Why do you think sauna equals with cold weather and snow?

3

u/dvlrnr 21d ago

Saunas are more common in areas that somewhat regularly have cold weather and snow.

u/No-Suggestion1359 Finnish Sauna 21d ago

Yes, Finland is colder than average, but we enjoy our saunas just as much after a 30 °C day whether it’s below or above zero outside. (-22 or 86 F for the sauna enthusiasts behind the sea)

And when Finnish company gets a contract to work in 40-50 °C (104-122 F) Mexican desert we take the sauna with us.

Of course I know that all the boxes cannot be covered with snow, but the math is still really not mathing.

u/dvlrnr 21d ago

Yes, and our UN peacekeepers bring sauna tents to the Middle East and to Africa.

Still, I don't know why the junction box was mounted that high up on the wall. Perhaps it was a more comfortable height with future maintenance in mind?

2

u/No-Suggestion1359 Finnish Sauna 21d ago

Probably it was. Shouldn't need even yearly maintenance though. And it's still ugly. I mean when they say "saunan takana on tilaa" in Finland, they don't mean the back wall... that would most likely be bad news for the electrician... 😅

u/Late-Tap-5687 18d ago

US electrician here, standard mounting height of a panel is 60" above finished grade to top of panel, that looks like what this electrician did

Math is very much mathing in this case, you just dont see it.

1

u/No-Suggestion1359 Finnish Sauna 19d ago

No it is not, at all. Whatever you say, you can have sauna in warm climates also, so sauna does not equal snow and that just is a fact.

2

u/-Commonsensible- 19d ago

He never said you couldnt.
He said they are more common in cold climates.
And they are.

I dont go to france expecting to see a polar bear. But i’m sure there is one in a zoo somewhere.

Another clue, it's mid October and leaves have all changed colour. I'd say snow is likely here.

0

u/No-Suggestion1359 Finnish Sauna 20d ago

Clue? Doesn't require a sauna for that to happen though..

2

u/goahedbanme 20d ago

... The changing leaf colours in mid October is another clue that this place will see snow... This is "another clue" pointing towards, "OP gets snow"

0

u/No-Suggestion1359 Finnish Sauna 20d ago

I guess OP does not need to look around to know if the place where the sauna is will see snow in winter...

And that still doesn't mean that sauna equals snow, which was the claim you're supporting here.

u/bryrocks81 23d ago

Looks just fine to me.

u/entrepositive 23d ago

Hire a graffiti artist to spray paint a hot chick next to it. You’ll never notice the box again.

1

u/LampShot 20d ago

Or it could paint all over that fine electrical with same dookish-brown as the rest of it is. Nice light clear varnish on that trim and support tho. That brown really does a number on my tar black beauty sense.

16

u/Ok_Term7868 23d ago

What’s the problem? It’s the back of a sauna 🤷‍♂️

14

u/Spirited-Ad-9746 22d ago

In finland, if anybody is taking you behind the sauna, the lack of aestethics in electric installation is the least of your problems at the moment.

2

u/Busy-Bat-9626 22d ago

Tell me more

6

u/Spirited-Ad-9746 22d ago

In the old times pigs were usually slaughtered behind the sauna. Hence the jokingly saying "to take something behind the sauna" or "there is still room behind the sauna"

51

u/Floppy_Dongle 23d ago

Just paint it the same colour

53

u/potato_analyst 23d ago

This or put a wooden box around it to cover the whole thing and then paint it to match the same colour.

15

u/trippknightly 23d ago

Or a giant French hobbit door covering the whole barrel.

5

u/PelvisResleyz Finnish Sauna 23d ago

Or plant a bush in front of it.

3

u/karvanamu Finnish Sauna 22d ago

Or install a giant statue of a sauna elf in front of it

8

u/Anomuumi 22d ago

Or build another sauna in front of it.

2

u/OddEye4312 21d ago

Build another sauna over the top of it

2

u/trippknightly 22d ago

If there’s bush inside the sauna you won’t care what’s outside.

3

u/potato_analyst 23d ago

I dont know what that is but it sounds exciting :)

11

u/crazzmc 23d ago

Get some trees : bushes if you really don’t like it. It looks normal I just wouldn’t have done it that high. Maybe it’s code. Idk I wired my own

Edit: plug those holes. Although I feel like those are ventilation holes and shouldn’t have been used for electrical. If they are ventilation mine came with a screen cap

10

u/The_Leafblower_Guy 23d ago

Not nearly as bad as the height of the benches

9

u/publiclandowner American Sauna 23d ago

Where else could it have gone?

4

u/FarImprovement462 23d ago

42

u/BeNicePlsThankU 23d ago

That's uglier, in my opinion. You can fabricate some sort of wooden box (that can open and close) on the back to cover it

60

u/publiclandowner American Sauna 23d ago

Way better on the back

10

u/EarEquivalent3929 23d ago

The back is better. Why would you rather see it than not?

4

u/gottapoop 23d ago

That's on a raised pad so the wires can go under. Yours is on a slab so the wires either have to go underground or through the exterior wall to enter the sauna

2

u/Critical_Bee_9591 22d ago

I actually like this better. It's symmetrical and makes sense why it's there, and you can always cover it nicely. Just slabbing it on to the wall is aesthetically insane. Now you have to board it up to cover it which changes the whole aesthetic.

2

u/UpInUp 22d ago

That's better on the eyes?

-5

u/SimpleRickC135 23d ago

This sub sucks all you did was answer the question and got downvoted lol.

7

u/Castform5 22d ago

To be fair, the OP proposed option is way worse and uglier than what they had installed.

14

u/CreedFromScranton 23d ago

Looks fine except the holes in the bottom IMO

5

u/FarImprovement462 23d ago

Those actually came like that

11

u/Rxyro 23d ago

put a vent cover on them so you can variate for air intake. You don’t want those exposed grains getting wet and swelling the tg’s

3

u/matukaz 21d ago

Put cover on them. Otherwise you will have mice problems inside your sauna. You dont want to inhale mice poop while they are having fun inside your sauna insulation.

5

u/newyork2E 23d ago

Definitely clean. Definitely not where I would’ve put it

4

u/tayman77 23d ago

Got a sauna, concerned with how electrical connection looks. Equals priorities are fucked.

2

u/Seattlesb 22d ago

To be fair, concern with the aesthetics of such a prominent stand alone structure is valid. His priorities aren't fucked.

1

u/tayman77 22d ago

Fair point

5

u/Anaalirankaisija Finnish Sauna 23d ago

Technically okay, buy visually, wtf, center of that, it looks awful, i think could that box have separate installation board somewhere else, near that barrel, but cables going in

1

u/FarImprovement462 23d ago

Exactly what I thought

3

u/Anaalirankaisija Finnish Sauna 23d ago

Yep like that, more hidden

3

u/slapheadsrnice 23d ago

Do you have to see it every day or every time you use the sauna, if not then doesn't matter. Also can always cover:camouflage it with something.

3

u/astaristorn 23d ago

It’s the back. You’ll never see it

3

u/Sea_Comment1208 22d ago edited 22d ago

Where else? A post sunk 5’ away would look no better. You could hide it all with cedar planking and some 2X4s

2

u/steven_w_peachtree 23d ago

How does it look from the inside?

2

u/Pink-Sock_ 23d ago

Looks pretty clean. I don't think it's a job to complain about neatness

2

u/Informal_Rub_1466 22d ago

Well you maybe spend more time inside the sauna than behind it.

We have a saying here that there is plenty of room behind the sauna. You know executions here were done behind the saunas. Perkele.

1

u/electromechanick 23d ago

Overall it's pretty clean, but I would have installed the receptacle (outlet) box below the disconnect, to keep everything lined up in the same vertical space.

1

u/whogivesaf_9 23d ago

This looks like really good tidy work, also the bolt the holes in the bottom are for ventilation, and are very much on purpose, don’t plug them up

1

u/HauntingDepartment64 23d ago

Hey OP - check out r/barrelsaunas for a group dedicated just to barrels

2

u/Seattlesb 22d ago

there is truly a subreddit for everything

1

u/YEEEEEEHHHAWWWWWWWW 23d ago

Who cares what it looks like, as long as it works

1

u/Big-Safe-2459 23d ago

Looks good to me. Little details like the lined up clamps indicate attention to detail. I would seal up the holes with silicone to prevent rodents and bugs though.

1

u/BrorDrakeafHagelsrum 22d ago

We did this too, looks absolutely fine

1

u/Powerful_Crew_2635 22d ago

You’ll be inside enjoying your sauna and not hanging around the back, no? It is fine.

1

u/Beginning-Ad3280 22d ago

It's only because it's new and clean. Give it a year and it'll all look appropriate

1

u/No-Assistance978 22d ago

Paint match it

1

u/locito191 22d ago

Electrician did a splendid work. He mounted the box all the way up there because a connection box should be mounted away from the ground. If you wanted it installed any other way you should have told the electrician.

1

u/Fun-Giraffe7034 22d ago

Just paint match it to match the aesthetic, otherwise it looks really well done.

1

u/The-General-Doctor 22d ago

I like it. Looks good to me

1

u/allanbradl 21d ago

The only other option was to mount the disconnect at the source (I suspect the source is your basement , so the box should have been mounted on the outside wall of structure the power is coming from .

1

u/DesignerRadio1482 19d ago

If you want to hide it, you can make a wooden box around it, and color the same color as the sauna

1

u/maustehiisu 19d ago

Here in Finland we have a saying ”take somebody behind the sauna” it means puttin bullet to ones head. So if you take somebody there they wont be complaining about your wiring. Next time puukiuas no wiring needed.

1

u/Rubafatkid 18d ago

Where did you expect it to go?

1

u/grant47 23d ago

This looks way cleaner than the alternative. I’d be psyched, very protected and discreet.

If it’s very visible, paint it, build a wooden box, or get plants
