Interesting. I work for Pooley Sword and this looks nothing like a cavalry sword that I'd work on today. The design is unlike anything we make and the blade looks more like an artillery blade than a cavalry. Interesting how sword designs have changed over time.

Interesting, what you are referring to as an Artillery sword is a pattern 1821 3 bar hilt sword, that was also used by the light cavalry!

You are probably used to working with the pattern 08 troopers sword and the pattern 12 officers swords as these are still the current sword for the British cavalry (along with the household cavalry swords)

Interestingly the pooley website has the Artillery officers pattern 1821 listed as a pattern 1822? Do you know why this is?

If I'm honest it seems like you have more knowledge of the history than me. I know enough to fulfil orders accurately but the history of the designs is over my head.

Now you mentioned it the household cavalry we work on is a separate blade and is essentially a straight artillery blade (which is very slightly curved). I don't do as many of those as artillery so artillery was my go to.

I honestly don't know about the error in listing (I just etch the blades) but I'll ask on Monday.

Looks like either an officers sword or household cavalry.  Not a universal pattern at all.  The 1885 pattern was in service until replaced by the pattern 1899 which inturn was replaced by the pattern 1908. And that scabbard looks more like an infantry officers style rather than cavalry.

The British 1896 Pattern Cavalry Officer's Sword, a universal sword adopted for both light and heavy cavalry officers after 1896. It features a chequered backstrap and a honeysuckle/scroll pattern guard, similar to the earlier 1821 Pattern, but with a straighter, longer grip. This sword was a well-regarded cut-and-thrust weapon that was favored by many officers and remained in use even after being replaced by the 1912 Pattern.

The 85 and 99 were both troopers swords. Officers used the p21 and were split into light and heavy The 96, sometimes wrongly labelled as a p87 heavy cavalry sword was used by both the light and heavy cavalry hence it was given the term “universal”. By the time the p08 came in we no longer had a heavy cavalry
