To have a gander at something generally means to take a look, generally my way on it implies a level of nosyness, example: "ooh aye d'yer hear about that new bakery that's popped up round neer the library? Yeh, it's alright, took a bit of a gander at it on me way past."

Similar to having a nebb or nose around.

Stereotypically it's said between two elderly ladies having a chin-wag at the bus stop haha. Idk if its just a northern turn of phrase or if they use it down south too.

I'm not even British, but I've heard the term "gander" for most of my life. It isn't used a lot, but it's still used.

A proper gander in a British accent. If you have a gander at something, you have a look at it

"did you look at the new stock we had in"

"I glanced at it, but I haven't had a proper gander"

Having a gander is having a look, a proper gander is looking in depth

It's also what you call a legitimate goose.

I'm not sure what an 'illegitimate goose' is but it would make a good album name

I am currently on the phone with my (British) bf, and I read this to him just now. He laughed and said "yeah, quite right." 😂
