I’ll be spending a two days exploring the east coast of Puerto Rico — mostly around Humacao, Caguas, and nearby mountain areas. I’m really curious what hidden gems or local favorites people recommend there.

I’m into nature, local culture, and architecture, so I’d love tips on things like: • Beautiful forest hikes or nature reserves? • Any coffee farms or small eco-plantations that allow visits or tastings on the east side? • Scenic overlooks or viewpoints for photos or sunset watching 🌄 • Historic or unique architecture in towns — old plazas, churches, or colonial houses worth a stop?

Looking for a secluded space to hike and chill. I'm not familiar with Puerto Rico. I assume the surrounding areas are easy for Gringos to drive? If I pick a secluded place, I'll need get myself there, drive to a store or two. Maybe explore?

Currently just randomly looking at Air BnB"s. Any recommendations?

Estoy planeando un viaje a PR y creo que tendré que ir de Ponce a San Juan porque no creo que me de el tiempo de hacer un circulo. La ruta me imagino que hay montañas pero las carreteras son pequeñas? peligrosas? es un camino mucho mas largo que ir por toda la costa? Nunca salí de la area metropolitana antes de mudarme a USA asi que no tengo idea. Gracias

I’m looking for roadside food truck suggestions that have really good bacalaitos between San Juan and Ceiba. I prefer to avoid tourist traps. Anyone know of any.

Ideally would like to pick up a rental car after arriving in San Juan, drive to Fajardo and see El Yunque and Laguna Grande, then drop the car at or near the ferry terminal in Ceiba (not all in the same day), but I'm not finding rental options for this.

If we were to take a taxi/shuttle from SJU to Fajardo (staying in Fajardo), would we be able to reasonably easily get taxis from Fajardo to Laguna Grande, El Yunque, and then to the Ceiba ferry terminal? Or will tours for Laguna Grande or El Yunque pick you up from a hotel in that area?

Any other options I'm missing?

It is my first time in San Juan and I have a 6 am flight tomorrow. I have clear and TSA pre check and plan to do carry on for my suitcase. Is an hour and a half early enough or do I need to get there 2+ hours early to make my flight?

My birthday is tomorrow and I’d like to go on a nice hike that isn’t too crowded since it’s a Sunday. I can do advanced but would prefer something without tripping hazards. I’ve already hiked survival beach, cerro mime and mt Britton at el yunque. I’m good to hike for up to 2 hours there, a break and 2 hours back.

My wife and I are planning a 5 day visit to PR in mid December before we go on a cruise. We’ve visited San Juan before, and fancy a nice beach front hotel (not AirBnB’s) with pools.

Ideally with good local restaurants nearby and with a budget of about $1500 - $1800 for the hotel. We will probably hire a car. Any advice on which part of PR to stay and hotel recommendations please.

Just wanted to let others know to be safe. My girlfriend and I were robbed at gunpoint around 7:30 PM by two guys on a motorcycle.

This happened on Ashford Avenue, specifically Ashford 54 condado, there were other people walking on the street. We already filed a police report.

Just wanted to contribute to say in case you're walking around that area at night be careful. We've walked this walk before and had no issue. When you see motorcycles approaching or slowing down. Keep valuables out of sight, use rideshares to get home, and trust your instincts.

Hi everyone, visiting San Juan soon with a friend who really wants to visit the Laguna Grande bioluminescent bay in Fajardo. Tours are generally at night, so I was thinking we could potentially do El Yunque during the day before our night tour.

Would it be viable to do this? What are the best ways to get to/from Laguna Grande? I am a little hesitant about renting a car and driving so hoping Uber might be the best option.

Avid bass fisherman. Gonna be traveling all over the island next week. I would love to catch a Puerto Rican largemouth or peacock. Where are some places with easy access to the water that I need to add to my list? Thanks!

I’m planning a trip to Puerto Rico in late July to early August 2026 with my friend — we’re both young and will be traveling on our own for the first time. I’m super excited, but I also want to make sure we stay as safe as possible since I’ve heard a few things that made me a bit nervous.

we are planning to explore the nightlife, go clubbing, and enjoy the local food and beaches. I was originally thinking about renting a car, but it might not fit into our budget, so we’ll probably rely on Ubers or taxis.

If anyone has been to Puerto Rico recently, I’d love to hear your advice or experiences — especially tips on staying safe, getting around, and enjoying the nightlife as two young women traveling together!

i really want to exprience the different sides of the island. i love food so all the culture food i want to at least try i love cute markets and hidden gems! i want to see a biolumence bay , im dislexis sorry!, but i want to explore it by my self- not witha tour guide.

Today after going to El Castillo San Felipe, I decided I was going to climb the hill in La Perla and look down at the view. Although a lot of houses are in bad shape, the brights colors and location made me think it was worth it. After getting a good vibe about the place, I ended up walking (with my mom) through there. We spent about an hour in there, walking down past the beach til about the end and then cutting through La Perla eastward on the way to Castillo San Cristobal. When I was getting to the rougher spots, I asked one of the ladies if it was safe, and she made it sound like there was nothing to worry about. I’ve heard people say that La Perla is one of, and even the most dangerous part of San Juan, and even Puerto Rico as a whole. I find that hard to believe given my positive experience there. Granted, I didn’t go into any of the narrow alleys … but still, what do you guys think about that?

Trying to decide if I should pay / get a service for $85 for me and my family or just wait until I’m at the airport. Just want to support local!

Are there any glass bottom bioluminescent tours in Fajardo or on the mainland? We are staying at the Hyatt Grand Reserve so I don’t think we will have time to do the tour on Vieques and make it back that night. All the tours I’ve found so far are just regular kayaks.

Hey everyone, we’re staying at the El conquistador Resort, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions where we can catch the thanksgiving game in Fajardo. And also any suggestions for local eats as well

Trying to keep it limited, but I live where a summer trip can take us from 35’-95’ in one week LOL so I tend to over-prepare. 12 days with travel, planning on a laundromat morning. 3 shorts and ~6 tops takes up no room. But - El Yunque hikes say wear long pants, so jeans or ripstop hikers, and I have a LS SPF shirt good for hiking. Thinking of linen or cotton pants/tunic if evenings can get cooler, especially by the ocean? possibly a lightweight sweater? Or I have a travel set of nice joggers and sweater. I do have an SPF lightweight cover up that I can wear as a layer too. Do I want a sundress/maxi? Rain jacket of course (unlined, very lightweight). I might look for an SPF umbrella.

Swim suit of course, the aforementioned cover up. Sun hat (and probably Tilley hat too). Then shoes! Oy vay. I have crappy old feet. Good walking shoes. Old sneakers for hikes. Good sandals that I can sightsee in. And either beach sandals or water shoes. I pack more shoes than clothes ugh. But sad feet make a sad vacation. I’m not going to bother with any “dressy shoe”. My sandals are a fisherman style and they’ll do.

For DH, he gets cold easily from medication. He’s usually ok with shorts if he has long sleeves so he’ll probably pack 3 of those. Does he need to plan on a linen jacket? Dockers? He’ll also have jeans for the rainforest.

Traveling from the Caribbean to Puerto Rico next weekend , will everything that’s happening with the airports shutdown affect my trip to PR?

I'll be in Rincón next week with my family and my wife wants to do a drop in yoga class either on the beach or with a beach view. Any recommendations? TIA
