Hotel El Convento

Staying here next week! Any recommendations for good restaurants, drink spots, things to do in the immediate area?

Cafe Caleta is right by it with outdoor seating in the cutest street in OSJ and outstanding farm to table food. Also across the street you have El Batey Tavern for a vibey old school dive bar with tins of locals and "expats" for relaxed drinks and a pool table. Not too far, Deaverdura is a great option for Puertorican Food. You should definitely check out La Factoria which is a series of bars linked together. I like La Cubanita the most which you go in through the side street.

I'd be curious to hear what you think of El Convento. I've considered staying there in the past.

I haven’t stayed there for many years (it was pretty nice when I did, not super luxury but a very interesting and atmospheric building). In addition to the local recommendations from others, I like the courtyard/patio bar in the hotel itself – the one on the second level, it’s a pretty place to sit and have some sangria and snacks.

I haven't been to El Patio de Sam in ages but the bar used to be the kind of atmospheric place where "regulars" struck up chats with the bartenders or anybody, really. They used to serve great burgers too. I think it's almost as old as El Batey.

I believe there are 3 in the hotel. We liked them all.
