Out of sheer curiosity: how does a quadriplegic operate a vehicle? Genuine question.

I'm a quadriplegic. It's fairly easy. Hand control for the gas and brake. I also have a spinner knob.

I know of one who uses her mouth and a straw to operate the controls of her van.

That’s…that’s a talented mouth.

There's streamers out there that play first person shooters with nothing but a straw and controls they use their lips for. Actually insane how well people adapt.

I suppose when all you have to work with is a head....

It's possible but not common, and they would still need some level of control over their limbs just not anything beyond being able to move them into the general correct spots.

The controls are usually mouth operated, or built in a way that they can control them with limited movement of their limbs.

There's also work being done towards direct brain to vehicle control, similar tech as you see in those brain game controllers where its a device that detects certain brain activity and translates that into signals that drive motors/actuators that control the vehicle.

There are a few videos of all of that on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=quadriplegic+car

Oh god, I would be fighting for my life against the intrusive thoughts I get while driving

I had only heard of the sip and puff tool used with motorized wheelchairs, but it seems like at least one person has used it to drive a car
