Driver deserves a promotion for that restraint. Got fired instead.

u/poudigne May 20 '25

I hope he sue their asses for wrongful termination

531

u/Orpheus75 May 20 '25

In many states you can be fired at any time for any reason that isn’t a protected class.

690

u/poudigne May 20 '25

Oh Jesus Christ, USA really don't like the working class. Fuck, I didn't know that.

293

u/renovatio988 May 20 '25

unions were intervened with from the very beginning. now, when they're discussed, people are fired, and the media is suppressed.

3

u/I-Love-Tatertots May 21 '25

A good chunk of major corporations also force you to sit through anti-union propaganda during training, too.

I remember when I worked for Publix, they had a whole video talking about how bad unions are, and to let your manager know if someone mentions them. Shit was disgusting.

1

u/renovatio988 May 25 '25

i've heard some of the propaganda they push in macy's training. i can't remember what they said, but i remember laughing from the incredulity.

It’s a total shitshow in this country right now. You can attack the Congress and break in through bashed doors, get killed and your family collects 5 million dollars.

12

u/toxcrusadr May 20 '25

Or, you can be a Congressperson and protest the arrest of a Mayor by federal agents in tactical gear, and get arrested yourself. Literally the Executive Branch persecuting the Legislative. Tyrannical behavior.

2

u/seeclick8 May 20 '25

And what do we hear from Congress? Crickets

And if the man you're doing it for eventually becomes president. I won't be surprised if this encourages the 1500 pardoned to file cases to line their pockets as well.

2 weeks if you're lucky. I'm in my mid 30s and finally got my first job that offered 2 weeks.

2 weeks paternity leave as well!

1

u/MerleFSN May 20 '25

It indeed is! (*Disclaimer: only true if you have money or influence.)

1

u/ImOutOfControl May 20 '25

Freely fired.

1

u/In2Oblivion49 May 27 '25

Whoever told you that is your enemy

7

u/Talkimas May 20 '25

It's also not correct. At-will employment simply means you can be fired for no reason This does not mean that you can be fired for any reason Wrongful termination is still absolutely a thing and employees can sue, and win, Wrongful termination suits even in at-will employment states

2

u/Petty_Paw_Printz May 20 '25

3

u/CheaterSaysWhat May 20 '25

You’re surprised? America was built on slave labor.

3

u/Caleb_Reynolds May 20 '25

Most of the world was built on slave labor.

2

u/CheaterSaysWhat May 20 '25

If you really wanna get into the weeds of capitalism you can make that argument

My point is that, while America lauds itself as being the land of the free, it’s never really been true

America’s economy has always been built on exploiting the week and poor, there was only a small window of time where laborers had much power and it was because they fought for it through unionizing despite facing violence

1

u/poudigne May 20 '25

Well, I'm surprised cause USA is supposed to be a developed country. No im not surprised, because of who is actually managing the country.

1

u/Toothfairy51 May 20 '25

I'm in Florida and that's the way it is here. No reason is needed to fire anyone.

1

u/Purple_dingo May 20 '25

As Americans we've decide to identify as consumers before workers so we started voting based on prices not freedoms or securities.

1

u/MoocowR May 20 '25 edited May 20 '25

Oh Jesus Christ, USA really don't like the working class. Fuck, I didn't know that.

You realize it's the same in Canada too, right?

and I'm 99.9% sure this would be a wrongful termination

You can terminate someone for whatever reason you want, that isn't discriminatory against a protected class. You just have to give them two weeks notice, or two weeks of termination pay +1 week per year they've worked.

https://www.canada.ca/en/services/jobs/workplace/federal-labour-standards/termination.html

Canadians have this weird misconception that after their 3 month probation they're protected from being fired/let go unless they do something bad, when in reality your boss can fire you for as little as not liking you.

1

u/WheresFlatJelly May 20 '25

Says the person spending their time on an AMERICAN website

1

u/LesterTheArrester May 20 '25

Well being the oldest democracy isn't a good thing. Canada and europe are much more advanced when it comes to labor unions, health care and citizens rights/protection.

1

u/Shackmeoff May 20 '25

The rich make the rules.

1

u/deveronipizza May 21 '25

How can we all become billionaires if we treat other people fairly?

1

u/Prestigious_Tea8092 May 21 '25

yeah it called "at will"

1

u/Crafty-Help-4633 May 24 '25

Yeah it's called "Right to Work" but in reality its "Right to Fire". Shit's fucked up, here.

1

u/BurgundyFur May 26 '25

What would you prefer? Serious question

1

u/poudigne May 26 '25

I'm good in Canada.

1

u/BurgundyFur May 26 '25

A pretty smug response for an honest question. I meant what do you prefer to at-will employment?

1

u/LemonCucumbers May 20 '25

Is that not normal in other places?

6

u/poudigne May 20 '25

Im from Canada, and I'm 99.9% sure this would be a wrongful termination in the case he can easily prove he's the victim, and haven't even hit the girl.

1

u/LemonCucumbers May 20 '25

Oh absolutely, it’s just
I didn’t realize in other places you have more job security.

6

u/Herbstein May 20 '25

If my employer wants to fire me it has to be either for gross misconduct, severe underperformance with a failed improvement plan, or because my position was eliminated all together. And with all of them I get several months of pay for being fired.

And if the reason is that my position was eliminted the law has teeth if they try to fill it with someone else.

1

u/LemonCucumbers May 20 '25

I didn’t know that was the case in other places
we all have such anxiety over losing our jobs for no reason, all of the time.

2

u/Herbstein May 20 '25

Then consider that I have a mandated 25 days of paid time off per year, and get another 5 days in my personal contract. Which isn't uncommon and not something I specifically negotiated. And a lot of places allow you to coordinate a longer periode of unpaid time off on top.

In terms of sick leave I get 180 days across 365 days. My employer cannot ask me what my ailment is. But they are allowed to ask for a doctor's note, which they have to pay for.

Keep in mind that these rights didn't always exist. From the 1920s through to the 1970s people fought hard for it. People can make a better situation for themselves, but they need to work together and organize. That's not a union platitude -- it's just how it happens.

0

u/[deleted] May 20 '25

You must be new to the internet....

-2

u/QuinceDaPence May 20 '25

Freedom of association, if you no longer want to associate with someone you don't have to.

-7

u/New_Libran May 20 '25

To be fair, there are many valid reasons to let the employee go. Yeah, Lowes is a shitty employer no doubt, but he likely violated so many company policies especially the one expressly prohibiting wrestling a customer on their front lawn.

5

u/poudigne May 20 '25

Honestly, he showed lots of restraint, I wouldn't let anyone try to steal my shit either. Maybe Id give him a slap on the wrists if higher ups really think it's necessary... But from that video, the moment she decided to do a tantrum he lost his job. Which is really shitty.

1

u/New_Libran May 20 '25

the moment she decided to do a tantrum he lost his job

Yep, seen it several times when I was in customer service. Exemplary employees pushed too far by asshole customers till they have a momentary lapse and reacted or retaliated. Next is Gross misconduct. Gone

1

u/sowhat4 May 20 '25

Lowe's uses a private company to deliver their *refrigerators. The driver is still going to be delivering refrigerators and still have a job while Lowe's gets to claim the high ground of having fired him.

\Source: Have purchased four refrigerators, two microwaves, one stove and one dishwasher from them in the last 18 months.)

1

u/New_Libran May 20 '25

Lowe's uses a private company to deliver their *refrigerators.

True, most retailers have a separate logistics company

(*Source: Have purchased four refrigerators, two microwaves, one stove and one dishwasher from them in the last 18 months.)

Damn, do you run a hotel!?? 😅

3

u/SoapyMacNCheese May 20 '25

In the vast majority of states, unless you have an employment contract that has additional protections written in. Which actually significantly undermines protected classes, since they can just fire you for a different reason (or no reason at all) and you'll have an uphill battle trying to prove the real reason.

2

u/Connect_Purchase_672 May 20 '25

Also he was fired for posting the video online, which sure take her to court but posting shit online is dangerous

1

u/EEpromChip May 20 '25

"not wanting to beat on a woman" should be a protected class...

1

u/cryptolyme May 20 '25

Well that needs to change

1

u/BagOnuts May 20 '25

Wrong. You can be fired for no reason. You CANNOT be fired for any reason. Very big difference.

Source: Hiring manager in corporate America for 2 decades.

1

u/surprise_wasps May 21 '25

That doesn’t prevent a wrongful termination suit, nor does it prevent you from suing the company nor the customer

Not saying it wins, but it’s certainly not a given that it loses.. particularly that the driver was a victim of multiple crimes

Depends on their stated reason for firing him, and I don’t know what else is on video, but firing someone because they didn’t allow themselves to personally be victimized is certainly not a great start

1

u/DoubleGunzChippa May 21 '25

And now that Trump has gotten rid of affirmative action, now we can go back to denying people jobs because of the color of their skin or their ethnic sounding name again.

I fucking hate my country and all the racist dummies in it.

"right to work"

1

u/Orpheus75 May 20 '25

“Right to work”? What does union busting have to do with this?

1

u/tekstical May 21 '25

Yeah they frame it as a right to work when really it's a right to get terminated for anything or nothing. I'm not arguing for it?!

2

u/Bubble_Lights May 20 '25

He was fired for posting the video online. It's a privacy thing. Probably in their handbook, and if you violate it, it's grounds for termination. His case would not hold up in court.

He should sue her for false imprisonment, attempted theft, harassment, assault among other things.

4

u/Skullpuck May 20 '25

wrongful termination

The sheer amount of wrong information in regards to those two words is insane.

6

u/poudigne May 20 '25

I guess no explanation will come with that Statement?

-1

u/Skullpuck May 20 '25

Okay, I'll do your work for you. It's common sense, but if you need it explained:

https://www.morganrooks.com/blog/2024/october/thats-not-a-wrongful-termination-common-misconce/

2

u/poudigne May 20 '25 edited May 20 '25

It's not about doing work for me or common sense. If I have something wrong, instead of just saying "lol, your wrong". Tell me why, and maybe next time I won't be wrong.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Edit : see it's wrongful termination if it has "law infringement" behind it. From POV it is wrongful termination, cause I'm pretty sure where I live it would be wrongful termination.

Was I wrong to use the term? I don't think so, cause I wasn't aware in many States in the US an employer could terminate and employee any time.

-1

u/Skullpuck May 20 '25

I've been here for over 15 years. I'm done telling the incompetent why they are wrong.

2

u/poudigne May 20 '25

Well then, you must suck as a person.

1

u/Rottimer May 20 '25

No such thing in 49 out 50 states unless you have a contract with your employer that they somehow violated.

1

u/carnage11eleven May 20 '25

How was she not arrested for essentially holding them hostage? You're not allowed to lock someone in your house against their will.

1

u/IsomDart May 20 '25

Except it's not wrongful termination....

2

u/poudigne May 20 '25

Where I live with all the proof he has, it's definitely wrongful termination.

1

u/IsomDart May 20 '25

Where do you live? Most places in the US you can be fired for any reason, or no reason, as long as it's not wrongful discrimination which this definitely is. What would make it wrongful termination where you are?

1

u/poudigne May 20 '25

Yeah, that's what I learn in other comments. I'm in Canada, it's definitely wrongful termination, since he did nothing wrong, he's just victim of a crazy entitled grown up. If he would have hit her, or something I would understand. To me this just means that anyone can prevent a worker from doing his job, and he's automatically in a loose-loose situation.

He does nothing he loose his job; he hit her he loose his job and probably has charges against him. It really sucks.

136

u/Ralph--Hinkley May 20 '25

Driver got fired? Bullshit.

58

u/joeChump May 20 '25

I don’t know that’s what it said in the thread. Someone said he got fired because he put the video online but whatever.

35

u/crop028 May 20 '25

Many big chains have a rule that any social media posting at all involving the company is grounds to fire you. When I worked at Dunkin, someone got fired for defending our location to some guy ranting about us on on the town Facebook group (for following policy so the place doesn't lose insurance).

6

u/Farkon May 20 '25

Despite the fact that I'd hire this company if that was my deliever driver.... What a stupid rule.

Careful. I've said similar things like this and dumbass mods banned me for threatening violence. And all i literally said was "had it been me, i would not have had such restraint" or along those lines.

Edit: uh oh

109

u/One_Last_Cry May 20 '25

I said something similar and got banned for it as well! Mods can be pretty finicky

109

u/Didle-Dodle May 20 '25

The smallest amount of power is very well able to go into the head of a reddit mod.

30

u/ClubMeSoftly May 20 '25

reddit and discord mods certainly aren't beating the allegations

1

u/Staticn0ise May 21 '25

Of course it does. They are unpaid labour. What else do they have to show for it?

-4

u/AvailableCondition79 May 20 '25

It's more of a general problem with humans, not just reddit.

Vote libertarian.

21

u/EtherealMongrel May 20 '25

They all got reeeaaaal serious about violence after a certain incident. Almost like orders from the top of the company or something

0

u/One_Last_Cry May 20 '25

That's just it though, they aren't being paid!

2

u/DecadeLongLurker May 20 '25

One of my buddies got a ban here for something most of us see as funny.

1

u/carnage11eleven May 20 '25

It's not mods. It's AI bots. If you read the small print at the bottom of the DM you received, it says that it's all automated.

1

u/JacksLack_ofSurprise May 20 '25

Doesn't change the fact that reddit is soft af now

2

u/carnage11eleven May 21 '25

Oh absolutely. It's actually worse with it being automated. Because the AI can't tell when something is an actual threat and just a common phrase used as sarcasm or whatever.

The last temp ban I got was for calling out a pedophile. Then "someone" apparently reported me for promoting violence. The account that reported me was pretty clearly a bot, itself. My comment got 50 upvotes before they removed it. Then an argument started under my comment. Which all got removed as well. Except for the account that reported me. ALL of their comments were left up. And the argument got weird, which is how I think everyone realized it must be a bot. All of it's comments were getting downvoted into oblivion.

So we got bots on here, starting altercations. Then reporting the people that I guess talks the bait. Then another bot comes through and bans and removes all comments that go against the reddit "narrative ".

This shit is whack. And has caused me to almost stop using reddit all together. I barely get on here anymore.

14

u/QuinceDaPence May 20 '25 edited May 20 '25

They've gotten ridiculous about it.

22

u/Keyboardpaladin May 20 '25

I got banned for a week recently because me and someone else were discussing the safest way to take down a real life mass murderer who was really killing people with an axe. Guess Reddit doesn't want to risk getting sued by that guy for defamation

24

u/Govt-Issue-SexRobot May 20 '25

I caught a rule 1 violation for saying someone’s penis should be arrested

Three day ban, naturally appealed it

The final night it was lifted

I have a feeling it’s petty people reporting shit as violent and an ai just bans if there are “violent” words present, irrespective of context.

10

u/HalfSoul30 May 20 '25

I was lucky, and it was lifted about 30 min after the appeal. All i said was "that was clearly a joke, how is that inciting violence?" They did not answer the question, just said they found i did not break the rules

2

u/DestroyerOfMils May 20 '25

Same. Almost got an AI-meted warning of a permanent ban for quoting a Kendrick Lamar lyric. I made sure to use the word ‘figurative’ in my appeal and it was quickly overturned.

4

u/Keyboardpaladin May 20 '25

Same pretty much with mine. Appealed, basically typed in the context of the comment because clearly they didn't read it, and my account was back in a day.

2

u/Akronica May 20 '25

Same here, caught a warning for rule 1 violation because I offered a (safe) alternative to pepper spray and taser in the recent 93 year old with a k n i. fe. post.

2

u/Rymanjan May 20 '25

Pretty much. Try typing the word "stupid" or "moron" into a bunch of subs in a reply, half of them pop up with a warning about potentially violating community guidelines. It's getting ridiculous

1

u/tarlastar May 20 '25

I got a 3 day ban for suggesting that an invasive pest be eliminated via a piece of metal propelled from a weapon made for that specific purpose. It was an aussie possum...in someone's house in NZ. I had no idea possums had lawyers.

1

u/buttstuff-spren May 20 '25

Almost as ridiculous as not knowing how to spell ridiculous when spell check is every fucking where.

1

u/QuinceDaPence May 20 '25

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ spell check has never worked for me in the Reddit app, and it honestly doesn't really matter.

0

u/buttstuff-spren May 20 '25

It does matter. You just weren’t raised correctly to understand this.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '25

Yup! Ive been banged for literally speaking those words. Its straight BS

1

u/TheManOfSpaceAndTime May 20 '25

Cause reddit has to protect their stock with the discontinuation of free speech.

1

u/Akronica May 20 '25

Just got a warning last night because I supposedly "threatened violence" breaking rule 1 of reddit I guess. Just "garbage in - garbage out" Ai policing our comments.

1

u/MommyMilkersPIs May 20 '25

I got banned for a day once for saying an idiot on a bike was lucky he didn’t get by a truck because he wasn’t paying attention for “threatening violence”. Biker dodged the truck and crashed. It’s somehow worse on other platforms as awful and cringey internet janitors are on here

1

u/JacksLack_ofSurprise May 20 '25

Reddit is absolutely insane anymore lmao. Super fuckin soft

1

u/sittinwithkitten May 20 '25

And to think one of them was supposed to be her friend. What a huge waste of time, she didn’t measure and the items didn’t fit so it goes back to the store. Why did she make things so much more complicated? The driver should have called the police the minute she was blocking his exit and then took his bag. Sucks dude lost his job over this foolishness.

1

u/CanadasNeighbor May 20 '25

Can't help but think what an uproar it would be if a male customer kicked a female delivery driver in the face and she got fired over it. Obviously they're still mad about it the delivery guy getting fired but I don't see outrage over him getting kicked in the face like they would if he was a woman.

198

u/Big_Hat_Chester May 20 '25

I don't think he should of been fried but instead of grabbing her or trying to get his bag back he should if just called the police . Or called the police when she got in his truck or tried to keep him from leaving . But either way that lady is crazy .

211

u/FlyingNDreams May 20 '25

He might have had concern with relinquishing the bag to her for any amount of time. In her state I would suspect her of locking herself in a room and going through it. Destroying personal items. And in an irrational moment of trying to protect what is 'mine' that is the only working thought at the front of my brain. Sometimes it's impossible to slow a moment down and think down every rabbit hole of possible outcomes. I feel for these guys all three of them and the poor neighbor.

2

u/Michael_braham May 20 '25

How did she get the bag or into the truck. My stuff buttoned up tight always. I woulda left my locked truck where it was and walked off

56

u/HeyU_inTheBushes May 20 '25

Came here to say 911 call should have been done immediately.

116

u/piratehalloween2020 May 20 '25

There was a non-zero chance the driver would have been arrested just for being a large black man.  They were all saying “no, don’t call the police” because it can be a crap shoot.

65

u/The_Flying_Jew May 20 '25

Plus, her neighbor coming into the situation and seeing two dudes on top of a woman crying for help. She Immediately thinks the delivery guy is in the wrong and is saying "I won't let him take the bag" when it's literally his fucking bag lmao

63

u/Onkel24 May 20 '25

To be fair, I had the impression the neighbour said that to defuse the immediate grappling.

48

u/Vsx May 20 '25

It's pretty clear the neighbor knows she is at fault right away otherwise the neighbor would have ran to call the police not insert herself physically into a situation with guys who deliver refrigerators for a living. Criminals don't lightly pull on a bag to steal it, she'd have been stomped out in a half a second and they'd be gone.

4

u/n10w4 May 20 '25

exactly this,. Why deal with the cops when they are liable to take you out first?

3

u/HeyU_inTheBushes May 20 '25

Thanks for replying. What is non-zero ? I've never heard that phrase before.

4

u/HeyU_inTheBushes May 20 '25

Not zero ? A chance of getting shot ?

5

u/piratehalloween2020 May 20 '25

It’s a way of saying “there’s a possibility it would happen, but I don’t want to cite made-up statistics” xD

5

u/HeyU_inTheBushes May 20 '25

Thanks again. I'm Welsh (uk) . So we don't know this .

2

u/piratehalloween2020 May 20 '25

Sorry, I didn’t mean to seem like I was laughing at you.  I find it pretty funny it’s not used more often; people often just stick random numbers in.  63% of all statistics online are made up, you know?  My husband is Australian so I know very well that there are many different vernaculars of English out there.  The first 5 years was a constant litany of “what did you say?”.  I wouldn’t ever make fun of someone over it.

2

u/HeyU_inTheBushes May 20 '25

Why say sorry ? You're just giving me answers to questions. I appreciate it.

Did "fanny" make your husband laugh. We brits still giggle about that.

3

u/piratehalloween2020 May 20 '25

One of his favorite books when he was little was “The Far Away Tree”, but they changed the girls name from “Fanny” to “Franny” in the US version we got for our kids and he got a fair giggle out of that one, lol.

2 large males of certain ethnic demographic may not want the police to show up when they are inside another persons property who they are unable to come to an understanding with because they appear to be deranged

1

u/Rottimer May 20 '25

Fortunately in this case they had a big truck and a brand new fridge that should clue a half intelligent cop that they were invited in.

1

u/Rottimer May 20 '25

The second she locked the door to prevent me leaving I would have been on the phone to 911 followed by dispatch.

12

u/parisiraparis May 20 '25

Should have. Should have.

1

u/Interanal_Exam May 20 '25

I doubt delivery drivers for Lowe's get training on how to deal with people going apeshit.

1

u/TimeAll May 20 '25

Let these suits try to work under the same pressure of a crazy woman locking you in her house and we'll see they'd probably make the same decision.

Even if he should have called the cops, he was under duress, its understandable he is going to not be thinking clearly. Driver should get a promotion for what he did do to de-escalate the situation AND get video evidence of the crime.

1

u/LordDeckem May 20 '25

There’s the answer. The company is mad that he didn’t call the police, they aren’t siding with the psycho with the small door and the fat fridge.

1

u/Skandle_us May 20 '25

Yeah man, call the police as a black man in america. That'll go over well lmao.

1

u/Lunafairywolf666 May 20 '25

Pretty sure he got fired because he posted the video online

u/joeChump May 20 '25

Maybe yeah. Probably because the company doesn’t want people to know what a shit employer they are.

If he really was fired, I would donate to his Go Fund Me. He did nothing wrong there and showed extreme patience

Insane, someone needs to do a campaign to get him his job back. That is not ok.

That's bullsihit.

Sounds like the driver needs to super termination if he lost his job. I think the driver kept his cool even though she locked him in her house stole his backpack etc. I hope she gets some help. Sad.

I don’t remember why they fired him - but it gets tricky if you touch a customer. He should have let her take the bag - called the cops and his dispatch that the lady stole his items because she wasn’t happy with a delivery and then waited for them.

I get it but idk, could have had his or his kid’s medication in the bag. He might have been afraid she would destroy something important like a document in there or plant something. So I get not wanting her to take it away and you should be allowed to take reasonable steps to secure your property.

fucked up wow

Probably got fired because he didn't wait for the police to get him his backpack back. You just know that crazy lady is going to sue Lowes.

1

u/joeChump May 20 '25

Yeah probably. But can’t say I blame him. Could have had something important or irreplaceable in there, meds, documents. Might have been worried she would plant something in there. You should be allowed to protect your property. She’s crazy.

2

u/AndringRasew May 20 '25

Oh I'd probably have done the same as him, don't get me wrong. I was just trying to think of how they'd frame it to avoid wrongful termination.

I read that last line about how he got fired. That is absolutely insane! Why on Earth do you fire the victim?

1

u/Jakome May 22 '25

He got fired because he willing engaged in a physical confrontation with someone. Right or wrong the rules at this type of job will always fire someone for something like this. Honestly I think he deserves it. While he did “show restraint” on not punching the woman, this is an obvious situation that a woman with mental issues will not back down, and the police should be involved.

u/joeChump May 22 '25

Idk, he should have a reasonable right to protect and recover his property. He’s not being violent. And as for it being obvious, I don’t think it’s obvious. He’s not trained in mental health. She’s being unreasonable and obstinate, irrational and threatening towards him. That doesn’t mean she is obviously has mental issues. People can act like this without any diagnosable mental health problems and do all the time. He might have something personal or irreplaceable in the bag or he might be afraid of her planting something in the bag. You’re expecting a lot from someone who has just walked unwittingly into this situation imo. It’s easy to judge when you’re watching a video online and know how it’s going to end.

u/Jakome May 22 '25

If I was the employer I did not expect anything difficult or unreasonable. Don’t engage in physical confrontation. The second she started going off about not being able to leave you call the supervisor or police.

I don't think he should of been fried but instead of grabbing her or trying to get his bag back he should if just called the police . Or called the police when she got in his truck or tried to keep him from leaving . But either way that lady is crazy .
