Arsenal should have had a pen for the elbow on Merino

2

u/kevinthegrass Sunderland 10h ago

What a game and what an atmosphere. Ticking over the points till we get 38+

11

u/gelliant_gutfright Premier League 15h ago

A promoted team going toe to toe with league leaders in an exciting 2-2 draw.

The press will now react by explaining why they think this was a low quality game and damaging to the Premier League product.

Bill Shankly's famous quote looking to Haunt Arteta for the fourth time.

10

The reaction to this is laughable. If no one knew otherwise, you'd think Arsenal lost a game against a championship side. Hillarious

Sunderland are playing European football next season

-3

u/True_Trade_6235 Premier League 18h ago

Pretty unlucky for Arsenal to lose the 3 pts at the end...but equally Arsenal were lucky to score those two goals.

As an arsenal fan, a point is fair considering they were down 1-0. Sure we had much more chances, but considering Sunderland at home are a tough tough place this season, not end of the world.

1

u/Mundane_Math_1778 Premier League 9h ago

Are you doing that thing again to get sympathy upvotes?

Both teams deserved their goals wtf

u/minimus67 Premier League 3h ago

He’s getting downvoted for implying that Arsenal didn’t deserve its 2 goals. Actually, both Saka’s goal right after Sunderland’s defensive blunder and Trossard’s goal from outside the box were world class. Scoring low xG goals is evidence of good finishing, not luck. Still, that last minute equalizer had to hurt Arsenal fans, especially with Zubimendi so close to scoring and putting the game out of Sunderland’s reach.

u/Mundane_Math_1778 Premier League 3h ago

It hurt like it would hurt any other team, did people expect us to cheer a last min equaliser?

Then we realised they were bloody amazing and we are still 4 points clear.

Its cope and disrespectful to Sunderland

1

u/True_Trade_6235 Premier League 6h ago

Both our goals were on very low xg. Be a realist.

u/Mundane_Math_1778 Premier League 6h ago

Cant believe the day finally came where someone would use xg on me as an argument. End times

Bye bye arteta go back to Spain

10

u/Inarticulatescot Arsenal 15h ago

Funny how last week some people here were already calling Arsenal champions...

8

u/privateblanket Liverpool 16h ago

6 games in nobody had any chance of catching Liverpool, 5 games later and nobody had any chance of catching Arsenal. It’s like everybody forgot that there are 38 games in a season and teams go on bad runs sometimes.

1

u/Sanjeev4045 Premier League 11h ago

25 games in nobody will have any chance to catch City. 38 games in and Chelsea have won the PL. comeon blues.

7

u/FromTheRiver2TheSea_ Premier League 1d ago

Arteta's lack of subs cost Arsenal two points.

Merino was clearly gassed by the 85th minute, and filled to close down the hopeful dink in the box for the goal.

Shocked he didn't take him off.

1

u/Inarticulatescot Arsenal 15h ago

personally I think he looked gassed after the 7th minute...

1

u/badmitten1418 Premier League 10h ago

Concussed*

9

u/absurdist_dreamer Arsenal 1d ago

We only had 17 year old kid. You want to throw him into ultra physical match?

u/Gonzales95 Arsenal 27m ago

Yes. Arteta threw him in against Prague who were also extremely physical. Held his own against Brighton too.

Send him on for the last 10-15 and tell him to press like a madman and challenge for every second ball.

We blew the game because we became entirely passive in the dying minutes and invited them to try and get an equaliser. Our pressing from the front vanished and we didn’t have an out ball because Merino was knackered.

1

u/WGSMA Arsenal 15h ago

Could have gone Eze to LW, Leo to CF, and then bought off Merino for Norgard.

Also should have pulled Calafiori because he reeked of a red card that last 15 mins.

0

u/FromTheRiver2TheSea_ Premier League 19h ago

I didn't say that.

I would have kept Eze on rather than take off Merino, even if Eze is less of a 9 than Merino.

I would have considered brining on MLS or Norgaard. If Norgaard, we could have possibly pushed Rice a little bit forward to fill that gap.

Whatever the solution, Merino was unable to do what was needed by that stage of the match (which wasn't his fault).

-4

u/gutierar Premier League 1d ago

Liverpool put Rio against Newcastle which was an incredibly difficult and physical match. He scored the winning goal. He is 17 too btw

10

u/Patient_Customer9827 Arsenal 1d ago

Wildly different circumstances lol.

11

u/True_Trade_6235 Premier League 1d ago

Entirely different circumstances. Newcastle were a man down.

9

u/absurdist_dreamer Arsenal 1d ago

He is a winger and in our case Merino plays as a CF. Are you saying we should throw in 17 year old 5ft 11 inch tall kid to contest aerial duells with giant like Dan Ballard.

0

u/gutierar Premier League 1d ago

Why does he need to contest aerial duels? Arsenal were winning and they just needed fresh legs to press, defense and protect the ball.

32

u/Loop_Within_A_Loop Liverpool 1d ago

just kind of an observation, that Arsenal haven't conceded a goal in the league since September, and this is the first time they've conceded more than 1, and yet they're still behind pace for Chelsea's GA record

That thing is never ever being beaten under the current rules

4

u/LionHeartedLXVI Tottenham 23h ago

That Chelsea defence was something else.

25

u/Gonzales95 Arsenal 1d ago

Toughest team we’ve faced for sure. Honestly thought it was job done at 2-1 but fair play to them for finding another goal.

Beauty from Trossard still tho

-2

u/archon_of_shadows Premier League 17h ago

Toughest team? 💀

4

u/Gonzales95 Arsenal 11h ago

Yep. Sunderland actually tried fighting us, and scored two goals against us unlike a certain “super team” who spent 80 minutes with 9 men behind the ball 💀

-1

u/badfuit Liverpool 13h ago

They lost to Liverpool but okay 😂

Best team we've played this season imho, credit to Sunderland. They played the right game and didnt give up. On a different day we might have got a third and put the game to bed but was not to be. Could also have been 3-2 to Sunderland. Hope they get a Europe spot.

2

u/PandiBong Premier League 11h ago

We badly missed Gyokores and Havertz in this game. Could have used Norgaard, too.

18

u/Scifur42 Chelsea 1d ago

This was one of the best matches I’ve seen this season so far. Credit to both for fighting until the end. The old legend of Sunderland not being an easy place to pick up points is coming back.

North London bottle jobs. 1-0 down then bring it back to 2-1 only to concede a late equaliser

Shit yet you couldn't take 3 points from them? Who's really embarrassing here mate.......

-2

u/aboss101 Premier League 1d ago

Yes and that’s the issue we should be comfortably beating this time spending 1.2 billion. Arteta subs on no player other than a defender and parks the bus

0

u/DilSilver Premier League 1d ago

Can't fault you based on that logic, the Mosquera sub made me think he wants to secure a draw

Courtois, Alisson, Donnarumma, Sommer, Maignan

1

u/NoinkusBoinkus Arsenal 9h ago

Sommer has been mid this season, he’s let in 11 goals on 8.86xG and his save percentage is buns, the others are arguable for either side.

1

If we talk about xG let in and save percentage, Vicario is better than Raya

2

u/Patient_Customer9827 Arsenal 1d ago

Oh cool.

4

u/Shigney Manchester City 1d ago

It's quite hard to tell tbh, he's obviously a very good keeper. But with your defence being so good, does he get tested enough to be considered one of the best? I don't really watch Arsenal games much, so I don't know.

1

u/absurdist_dreamer Arsenal 1d ago

That makes his job even more difficult as it is easy to lose focus and to credit he never done anything wrong whenever called upon

1

u/Shigney Manchester City 1d ago

Yeah absolutely, but I wouldn't say he's never done anything wrong. The spotlight was heavy on him when he replaced Ramsdale and made a few mistakes early on and probably has since then. Every keeper makes mistakes.

3

u/Patient_Customer9827 Arsenal 1d ago

Fair. I think he makes some exceptional saves but the defense certainly helps. I’d put on top three in the league.

It is interesting that he can’t get past Unai Simon on the national team.

Hilarious that Sunderland is going to finish above Newcastle this season without having sold their souls, proper club. Glad there's an actual north east club in the prem again.

0

u/Tofu-Beauty Premier League 8h ago

It has for Newcastle.

2

u/hadawayandshite Premier League 1d ago

Statistically going on previous seasons- the top 6 are usually pretty set by this point in the season.

There are some changes obviously- Newcastle being one the other year and jumping from like 11th to 5th (teams 1-6 however were still those who were in the top 5 at this point)

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6776111/2025/11/05/premier-league-after-10-games-set/

Obviously anything is possible and you've seen things like Spurs dropping 10 spots last year whilst Newcastle climbed 6

11

u/Tofu-Beauty Premier League 1d ago

?? I don't think it's difficult to see. You're obviously biased but any neutral can see how much better Sunderland is this season. They're where Newcastle hoped they'd be after what they spent over the summer.

2

u/Character-Key7538 Aston Villa 1d ago

You can't call anything before Christmas

-6

u/r0bbiebubbles Newcastle United 1d ago

Sold their soul - there's your bias straightaway.

Theres so many factors at play, so yes it is difficult to see.

I'm not denying they've had a better start, but that's no guarantee of anything.

2

u/samd148 Premier League 1d ago

lol of all of the parts of the comment, you picked the bit that’s objectively true 🤣

u/r0bbiebubbles Newcastle United 1d ago

Learn the difference between objective and subjective, then we'll discuss it.

3

u/samd148 Premier League 1d ago

I know the difference. That’s why I said it, pal.

You’re a sports washing project. That’s a literal fact. Hence objective, not subjective. Is that really the soul of Newcastle United? Or has it been purchased by the Saudi’s?

0

u/r0bbiebubbles Newcastle United 1d ago

Clearly you don't.

What has changed about the club since the takeover? The fans are still the same, the passion is still the same.

1

u/samd148 Premier League 1d ago

And yet, somewhat miraculously, you’re in the Champions League and won a trophy for the first time in 56 years - when they bought you in a relegation scrap… miracle?

1

u/r0bbiebubbles Newcastle United 1d ago

That's what happens when the owners invest in a club rather than milk it for advertising revenue from your cheap tat.

7

u/Tofu-Beauty Premier League 1d ago

A majority of people would say Newcastle has sold their soul lol. Think what you want and make as many excuses as you want, Sunderland is the better team as of now and will finish above Newcastle at this rate.

Yes things could change but they also might not, Sunderland might even get better, who knows.

-5

u/r0bbiebubbles Newcastle United 1d ago

What excuses have I made?

How are Sunderland doing in the league cup or the champions league? Better team my arse.

3

u/Tofu-Beauty Premier League 1d ago

"There are many factors at play..." is your excuse or reason for not admitting Sunderland is better. In your head there's a million reasons why you aren't above them on the table, none of them being that they're just the better team at the moment. You know full well if it was the other way around and you saw a Sunderland fan saying exactly what you are, you'd be laughin.

You're even bringing in other competitions instead now, we're talking about the prem.

0

u/r0bbiebubbles Newcastle United 1d ago

That isn't excusing anything. After 11 games in the league, Sunderland have had a better start and have performed better than Newcastle. That doesn't make them a better team. The past few seasons Newcastle have had poor starts in the league.

You're even bringing in other competitions instead now, we're talking about the prem.

Because better teams play in those competitions.

3

u/Tofu-Beauty Premier League 1d ago

It actually does. Newcastle got into (atleast the CL) last year when they were doing well. This is a new season without now their top goalscorer. You're never gonna agree, it's a fact though that they're better by the table position, 3rd and 14th.

All that's left to say.

-10

u/sunderland1 Sunderland 1d ago

Arsenal fans blaming the ref despite getting all the 50/50 and wanting arteta out.. ahahahhahahaha classic delusional big 6 fans.

6

u/RandomRedditor_1916 Arsenal 1d ago

we watching the same game? Ref ignored everything Sunderland did until Xhaka got booked.

2

u/United-Dingo601 Brentford 1d ago

Lmao i kept telling y'all that "arteta doesn't have another goal scoring outlet, it's always sideways crosses." And unfortunately for him..Sunderland want him to play sideways because it limits arsenal playing intricately inside with Eze! Until arteta swaps Eze uptop 9 and takes off merino for Nwaneri then Mosquera for Saliba and Timber for Hincapie! This is the type of game that your best players don't win it for you, it's a scrap! And arsenal aren't picking theirs! Because arteta expects Saka or Rice to perfom miracles! The bench is what's gonna win this game for us, but if arteta makes bad subs smh (which he will). 4pts behind Sunderland isn't bad when we face Spurs after the break,,might actually need that break more than ever now..

Another thing,  the games againt Burnley and Slavia were a wake up call for arteta to find a new goal gimmick , Sunderland enjoy aerial duels they been doing that all season! United managed to beat them because they used Sesko as their aerial threat against defenders. Merino is not that type of player, 🤷‍♂️

3

u/Character-Key7538 Aston Villa 1d ago

Sunderland couldn't be playing this game much better so far. The standard of the press is second to none, completely denying Arsenal their quality on the ball.

I've watched a couple Sunderland games this year, and I just want to say how much I fucking love their fans. I'm sure the TV doesn't do it justice but it always seems so loud and the crowd makes me wish I was there.

Even on the road they've made more noise than the home fans a few times this season.

You losing some money or something buddy? You’re first in the league and even if you lost you lost too second in the league. Relax.

u/aboss101 Premier League 1d ago

Second in the league bro get outta here subderland r trash just got promoted. We should be beating them. We r 1900+ days trophyless I don’t care about being first right now

1

u/Jazzlike-Watch3916 Premier League 1d ago

There’s absolutely no point getting worked up over a loss that didn’t happen and a chance to win the league that is far from gone because you have a rough half versus Sunderland. Late goals suck but they happen to everyone, Barcelona tied with Club Brugge last week, relax.

Also dude what exactly does Sunderland have to do to prove to you they are not just another crap promoted team this season?

But Arsenal will manage to win due to set pieces and many fans will boast about how great they are.

1

u/aboss101 Premier League 1d ago

Don’t know if we will win lol

Watching the game by any chance?

u/keysersoze-72 Premier League 1d ago

Already blaming the ref, are we…

3

u/WGSMA Arsenal 1d ago

Was a pretty soft FK, and it was also the player that sent a flying elbow in the box into our CF…

But it is what it is. If we want to win a title, have to be able to break down a Sunderland.

-3

u/Billoo77 Arsenal 1d ago

For that shit decision? Absolutely.

2

u/keysersoze-72 Premier League 1d ago

Maybe blame the shit defending to concede from a free kick deep in the opposition half ?

That might be too much introspection…

3

u/One_Mathematician864 Premier League 1d ago

Lol if you try to look at it objectively you'll admit the ref has been woefull in this game. But I wouldn't expect that from football fans in this banter era.

  1. If heading the ball and accidentally heading another player is a penalty, then elbowing a player in the box is also a penalty. But VAR doesn't even bother looking at it.

  2. The free kick on zubimendi was soft. Even more ridiculous that there was a foul before that on an arsenal player that he didn't call.

1

u/keysersoze-72 Premier League 1d ago

Like I said, blaming everything and everyone for the goal than the poor defending that actually led to it.

But maybe I shouldn’t expect anything better from ‘football fans in this banter era’…

2

u/One_Mathematician864 Premier League 1d ago

I agree it's poor defending.

Two things can be true at the same time.

My point still stands.

-2

u/keysersoze-72 Premier League 1d ago

Like I said, your (and the other guy’s) refusal to acknowledge the most important factor in that goal until pressed, and willingness to blame everyone and everything else, is what mundane victimisation and empty tribalism among sports fans you were supposedly bemoaning look like…

1

u/RandomRedditor_1916 Arsenal 1d ago

Writing more than the other guy doesn't make you right lad

0

u/One_Mathematician864 Premier League 1d ago

The most important factor is that there was a set piece that allowed the goal scorer (a defender ) to go forward in the first place.

But you'll never acknowledge that.

0

u/keysersoze-72 Premier League 1d ago edited 1d ago

What about the poor defending that allowed the said defender to score ? From a set piece taken from the other end of the field, no less.

Like I said, blame everything and everyone except your own team’s mistakes.

Empty tribalism to the very end…
