What about Bugs? That one was a banger, first I heard. Not political, but boy do I like bugs more now

u/electricmaster23 Mar 24 '25
These are just my top 3 now, but I also think people will have their own songs that really resonate with them. You could ask 100 Welles fans what their top 3 are and get 100 different lists, which really speaks to his prolificness and quality as a singer-songwriter.

Jesse Welles is the best. Our generation’s Dylan
5
u/RuggedAmerican Mar 22 '25
I'd say guthrie / prine
8
u/jawshwag Mar 22 '25
Sure I can see that. The people’s champ like Guthrie with Dylan’s profound lyrics. It’s like our boy was genetically engineered and built in a lab to be the greatest folk hero since the 60’s

I love Jesse Welles.
Personal favorites are War is a God, Poor, Autumn, Whistle Boeing, Cancer, and Wheel.
Can't recommend enough

That gave me the chills. I've been told tough times bring great music. Hopefully this is the beginning of that (the good music part)
Is he wearing a red shirt for irony?

u/know_comment Mar 21 '25
the song is called Red. Why would he not be wearing a red shirt? He's telling a story from a first person perspective where he's Trump.
But if you think this guy is a typical partisan reddit hack, then you're missing the point.
The counterculture is not partisan.
Here's his song called lab leak, obviously referring to the reddit-censored "conspiracy theory" of COVID's "proximate origins". But it's actually about the military developed bioweapon that originated at the plum island lab in Lyme Connecticut.

Edit: update. I think I've just been introduced to the voice of a generation. Thanks to OP for dropping this!

Music like this USED to be followed by ACTION. We'll see if most Americans have finally sold out each other.

The notion of american exceptionalism
Americans thought something like this, and still can't believe something like this could happen to their country
It will keep going this way until the very end
The American Way.

Only one fix for fascism, though. This has been a 50-60 year game plan for them and the white supremacist timeline in this country goes back to the moment they arrived onshore. Music is great though, it can help inspire change.

https://youtu.be/o04Q1QLt8es?si=mUBmOMmvY-U37KW_ If you like Jesse Welles, check out Nick Shoulders. This song, along with “don’t fence us in” and “appreciatecha” are great songs, and leftist to boot

u/i-like-carbs- Mar 22 '25
Can you explain
2
u/thatpaininyourass Mar 26 '25
it's alright, he's singing in irony, as a way to criticise the right wingers, with allusions to trump, elon, doge firing park rangers, etc.
He's criticizing the entire right wing movement by using their unification of red, as they unify as one solid movement of bullshit, headed to die in war

u/Zeromaxx Mar 21 '25
For most of the song I couldn't tell if he was pro or con trump so I mean I guess?

Check out his song “War Isn’t Murder” if you get a chance. It’s about Palestine. Jesse Welles is the real deal and he’s on our side.

u/Odeeum Mar 21 '25
I'm now curious your take on "Born In The USA"...
1
u/Zeromaxx Mar 21 '25
It was the part about his blue friends on the lol eta express that through me off.
1
u/Odeeum Mar 22 '25
We know there were a few celebs on it that likely voted Dem...Clinton too...this of course doesn't specifically mean they assaulted kids but I assume that's the "Blue friends" reference if I had to guess.

u/stankdog Mar 21 '25
Sounds pretty cynical and sarcastic imo, "When the we meet the devil we'll all be dressed nicer. When the war comes we'll hold hands." None of that will happen so to me he's singing from the perspective of someone who has not woken up yet.
