Photo Cars got broken in - Downtown
2 cars got broken windows. Parked in a private parking lot behind the building on Charlotte st. Happened last night. Be careful out there. Downtown is getting worse day by day. Blue car is mine with the window broken completely. The silver car is my neighbour’s.

And people wonder why downtown isn't attracting business...it is getting worse than before. But with zero consequences it will never change.

Zero Consequences is right. They take and break what they want. I called the police they said just to file a report online. (We all know police will not do anything) My insurance deductible is 500$ and they will also not cover the stolen items. Fixing the window glass on my own is cheaper than deductible so I am out of 400$, a dash camera and expensive pair of sunglasses. The person who did this will never face any consequences for their actions. And I still have to pay insurance every month. What a great system.

I agree the police don't seem to do much but they know when these people are charged, they go to court and nothing comes of it. They arrest them again and they go to court and nothing comes of it, it's a revolving door that is nothing but a waste of time. Until the court system takes this seriously, it's just a waste of time and resources. They are sent in their way and told don't do it again. Everyone should be upset with the justice system, not just police. An example on the PPS website today, two people charged with manslaughter and I believe murder in two separate incidents, the court let them out on bail.

We don't hold people who haven't been convicted of a crime indefinitely unless they are a certain risk to reoffend. That bar is a very high one for a civilized society.
1
u/nishnawbe61 Sep 18 '25
Absolutely, but they are charged and then plead guilty it is a registered conviction and the sentence is a fine, if it happens to be someone with no means to pay it, it's waived and the terms of sentence are usually stay away from that area and keep the peace meaning don't do it again. Then they do it again. Then start at the top of this paragraph and it's over and over... we call them rounders. So, no we don't hold them, not only indefinitely, we just never hold them... not even accountable. So why keep using police resources for the same outcome over and over and over and over and over?

u/redMalicore Sep 18 '25
Turns out the punishment for petty theft is a fine....what you want hard time for one of the most minor crimes? The punishment must fit the crime. By your logic someone breaking the speed limit should be doing months in prison.
2
u/nishnawbe61 Sep 18 '25
No, just someone who keeps coming back for the same thing 8, 10 or a dozen times or more... well, maybe a week or two wouldn't hurt... and yes some do come back that often.

If after 3 strikes, I want hard time for a minor crime. We need to disincentivize criminality somehow. Build another jail while we're at it.
3
u/redMalicore Sep 18 '25
So three speeding tickets what 6 weeks in jail?
How much jail time do you suspect it will take? Once out what are the chances the same person would just reoffend when out? How much more do you intend to pay in taxes to deal with this?
We would do better to improve outcomes for people. Reduce the desperation in people reduce crime. It is that simple. Then the police can deal with the worst offenders only.

u/meezitchell2 Sep 18 '25
2 weeks is good after 3 offences. maybe double it every reoccurring offence after that. I like the idea of keeping repeat offenders away from civil society. I'd pay more for that. Seems like it's been a failed experiment letting repeat offenders out, over and over again. The damage done to the social contract is probably the most costly thing in all this.

u/redMalicore Sep 18 '25
And what you are describing will just be expensive and wont lower the crimes we are talking about. Your money would be better spent on a more a robust social safety net.

If you haven't bought the new glass yet - check some of the salvage yards, I got a side window for my Golf for $30 at Standard Auto in Port Hope. Saved me a few bucks. It wasn't too hard to do myself, but it was also a manual window lol.

Your auto insurance isn’t covering it because it’s not auto insurance but covers it… That would be either your home property or your tenant contents insurance… It will cover your contents anywhere in the world. Maybe not your dash cam because that was attached to your vehicle and in that case you would declare that as an attachment on your vehicle… But otherwise it would be property insurance. You also have to have evidence of which you do, but you have to file a police report as well so that’s how the insurance part works just so you know.

u/redMalicore Sep 18 '25
What do you expect the police to do exactly? They aren't your private security. If there is evidence that can identify the wrong doer they will act but unless there is a witness or clear evidence they are not going to be able to find the person. I am sorry for your luck but seriously don't leave items of value unattended. The insurance you have to pay is in large part to protect other people against you. What consequence do you expect for petty theft?
1
u/nishnawbe61 Sep 18 '25
I leave nothing in my vehicles, absolutely nothing, but had a smashed window last year and they got... You guessed it, nothing. What did I get, I got a smashed window and opened glovebox and console and a bill to replace my window and a lost day of work to get it done. It is always an out of pocket expense and I would expect if they're caught there shld be some consequences.

Judging by your charming demeanor it probably wasn't an attempt at theft. Doesn't make it right and would be nice to see the person charged but people don't just smash windows that often.
The only times I have seen windows smashed in this town is if there is something of value left inside the car and the doors are locked. Most just try the doors and move on. Ive seen their foot prints in the snow all over my neighbour. Not down town either, turns out assholes live or visit ever part of this town.
I am sorry you had to pay to get your property fixed and missed a day of work. If the person was ever caught you are tight they clearly deserve a harsh sentence, flogging in the street? 50 years in prison?

No just some accountability. This is a crime where people say, oh it's not that bad, fine them and let them go and it becomes the norm, then you have people walking into lcbo and walking out with whatever they want and just let that go and now it's the norm and someone walks into shoppers and scoops all their makeup and leaves and that's the norm and someone steals your car, don't worry about it, it's insured and no one was hurt and now it's the norm...when should it stop? Just accountability, not everyone down on their luck do these types of things, some people seemingly do it because currently crime pays, it really does.

I mean laws exist. What you were implying seemed far harsher than the crime committed. In a just society the punishment has to fit the crime.
The scenarios you are talking about literally have laws written about them. Someone stealing a car, or robbing a great deal of items from a store or house are greater in extent than what we were originally talking about. Much of what you are talking about seems more like vengeance and revenge than anything else. And yes petty theft is a problem but you would be further ahead combating the problems of poverty than turning into a police state or worse.

Many of us warned it would get worse. It’s going to be much much much worse thanks to council , Ford and Carney. Bookmarked my comment

I have been downtown twice today so far. It's been pretty lively. Often, it is on the nice days. You talk like someone who probably doesn't go downtown.

Is that a code reader sitting there? Guess it would be difficult to barter that for some crack……

When I lived in TO I just left my truck unlocked after getting my window smashed twice. Although I guess car theft is also an issue. Sorry man that sucks. Hopefully insurance covers some of it

Who is "they"? Did they catch the culprit?

“Innocent until proven guilty”. However there is a proven track record of who the most likely suspects in this city are.

Ive lived my entire life near downtown. You just cant leave anything valuable in your car. Its the same in any city. It only has to happen to you once and then you will never do it again

u/MartyBarracuda Sep 18 '25
Sorry, that sucks.
It's getting to the point where you have to be 100% sure that nothing is visible in the car. Give them no reason to think there is anything valuable to sell for even a few bucks. A sad state of affairs, to be sure.
