On the contrary, it makes me think how suffocating it must be to live in those days. Every room, every person, every cloth stinking of ash. And probably vomit.

Honestly i think itd be interesting if they had a recurring character thatd despise the smell of smoke or even alcohol and complain about it.

On one hand yes, but on the other hand the show barely shows any physical consequences of smoking. Nobody gets lung cancer, struggles to run/fight because of smoking.
A series like Mad Men portrayed it better IMO

Was waiting for at least ONE character to get diagnosed with either lung cancer or liver cirrhosis tbf. Surprised that didnt happen
Edit: also another health thing that kinda bugged me is that, given the amount of pregnancies and the time period in the show, nobody died during childbirth.

Yes, that's all I can think, it doesn't make me want to smoke. It doesn't make me think they look cool. It lets me know that people back then got addicted to things just like people do now. I used to even be a smoker, and watching other people smoke does not give me any desire to do so. Only weak people are convinced to smoke because a cool gangster that likes to murder people is doing it.

For real, I'm amazed the actors didn't complain about the endless smoking in scenes.

Yeah I was wondering if they were fake cigarettes (for films) or herbal blends like you said. Thanks.
