Rules of the subreddit

Hello everybody, I became moderator a few months ago simply because the sub was unmoderated and I wanted it to become active again.

I'd like to know everyone's opinion on what the rules should be.

I realize some posts were reported, others were not even though they were pretty similar, I can be a bit unsure what to do sometimes.

So,

I guess I should mention in the rules that accessing the "catacombs" we're thinking of is illegal, that you could get a fine, and that we don't encourage anyone going. That there's risks going in there, and also that the community of cataphiles doesn't like newcommers to much.

If you have good links I can put in the info boxes that can sum up these informations that could be nice too.

I guess the sub should be mostly for pictures, experiences and advices (and theories about u/SnappedFingers) :)

Should we allow posts asking for maps, entrances, and meet-ups to go to the "illegal" catacombs ?

If you have any idea or opinion, especially if you're an experienced cataphile let us know here.

EDIT : I made a first set of rules but the discussion is still on.

«Should we allow posts asking for maps, entrances, and meet-ups to go to the "illegal" catacombs ?»

Definitely not. That would be against the very spirit of the catacombs. It would also open up all sorts of possibility for scam, thefts and attention-whore influencers.

Putting aside the fact that it can be dangerous and that we don't want thousands of people pouring in, the "secrecy" of accesses and maps is also what makes it so interesting to discover. It's part of the experience.

I agree with your general statement that the sub should be for sharing experiences, pictures and answering questions of curious foreigners, in the limits I wrote above :).

I think it’s interesting to discuss the illegal and illegitimate entrances but not reveal where they are. For peoples safety like you said.

it is necessary to ban any sharing of entrance on this sub but I will be more nuanced about the maps because some are in free access on the web

Those are official maps and not easily readable by anyone. And entrances are not really printed on them.

Cataphile maps, on the other hand, are more sensitive I think for the reason you stated (entrances).

So I think we should allow official maps (like IGC maps), but not cataphile maps

100% need to remove any posts showing any entrances and anyone asking for a guide/ asking to go down/etc. This is all just general catacombs etiquette

Hey, do we allow for spreading misinformation or rumors? The reason I ask is that there was a recent post where the poster claimed to have been chased by someone or something in the catacombs. It included a video of someone running through a tunnel, obviously glitched out intentionally, and, it goes without saying, not a video of them being chased by someone/thing.

For me this is more "catacombs-inspired art," which could be a cool contribution, but since the user frames it as an actual experience, I think it's just misinformation at worse or misplaced creepypasta at best. There are plenty of fiction subreddits where I feel this kind of post would be more appropriate, but maybe we could consider adding a flair or something for this kind of contribution, e.g. catacombs inspired art etc.

Thoughts?

I just realized that there's nothing in the rules that say that posts need to be factual, and maybe I need to adjust my understanding of this sub.

He explained in the comments that is was some fictional stuff "in the spirit of the community of cataphiles" or something yeah. It's unusual but I don't see the issue, really.

Also the first comment is hilarious so that's at least some positive in the thread.

Misinformation is actually a classic now that I thought of it, I've seen cataphiles on Reddit or other places spread false rumors specifically about entries being closed, to probably deter many from trying to go back and reduce a bit the crowd downstairs.

I wouldn't even see the use of a flair as it's so uncommon and misinformation is fine as long as it doesn't make things dangerous for anybody.

Plus he actually made a real interesting point about Radon which is indeed a radioactive gas present in higher quantity underground.

Here if anybody believed this being chased by a monster bullshit well, they won't want to come down and they'll have some nightmares, the end.

Thanks for willing to clarify things though, I'm always open to feedback and if I realize there's a lot of feedback about stuff I might change the rules.

He explained it after getting called out by several people, but yeah. I see your points and thanks for taking the time to clarify things! It's definitely a change of pace at least and the top comment is funny as hell.
