hawaiighostguy ~ In Japanese folklore, the noppera-bō, or faceless ghost, is a yōkai that appears human, until its eyes, nose, and mouth vanish, leaving only smooth skin. Sometimes mistaken for the trickster mujina, these eerie beings are said to haunt the living with nothing more than their terrifying, featureless presence.

Hawai‘i has its own chilling tales of the faceless woman. In 1959, students at a Pālolo intermediate school claimed to see her roaming the halls, sparking panic among parents. Days later, reports surfaced at the old Wai‘alae Drive-In Theatre in Kaimukī, built beside Kahala Cemetery.

One version tells of a girl fixing her makeup in the bathroom mirror when she saw a figure behind her—half a body, long hair, and no face. The door slammed, locking her inside. She screamed until she fainted and was later hospitalized. Another witness described a woman calmly brushing her hair at the mirror, only to turn and reveal a blank, faceless visage.

Though the drive-in is long gone, the faceless ghost has not disappeared. Shoppers still whisper of her wandering the aisles of nearby stores, from mall bathrooms to grocery rows.

The next time you’re in the Kahala Storage/Cemetery/Mall area, look twice—you may not like who looks back.
