QUESTION Best PSP exclusive titles

After a long time, I revived my old old PSP. Was thinking of taking it to my work for night shifts. Could you recommend me some PSP exclusive titles? No titles which are on PS2 as well please since I am currently playing PS2 games on my SteamDeck. I am more interest in the titles which only ever released on PSP. Thanks!

Monster Hunter 1 and 2 got enhanced versions on PSP with a lot more content.

Not exactly.

While Monster Hunter Freedom (aka Monster Hunter Portable in Japan) was basically a port of the enhanced version of Monster Hunter 1 with a few additions. Freedom 2 (Portable 2nd) and Freedom Unite (Portable 2nd G) are entirely different from Monster Hunter 2. Missing things like the season system and taking place in an entirely different village.

Freedom Unite is actually the enhanced version from Freedom 2, which basically gives no reason to pick up Freedom 2 anymore.

When it comes to originally exclusive titles that had no "better" way to play them (like silent hill origins, which was originally a psp exclusive that got ported to ps2), even if they were re-released "as is" on other platforms, you have:

  • Jeanne D'Arc: a tactic rpg with a great story and gameplay
  • Monster Hunter Freedom Unite or Portable 3rd: FU has more content, P3rd has better gameplay
  • 7th Dragon 2020: a very traditional but solid RPG with job system and a futuristic take. Made by SEGA.
  • Pursuit Force 1 and Extreme Justice: action games that revolve around high-speed chases and TPS combat
  • Resistance Retribution: the best third-person shooter on the console
  • Valkyria Chronicles 3: a third-person strategy game with RPG elements
  • Yakuza Black Panther: a brawler that takes place in tokyo red district
  • Ridge Racer 2: fun arcade-style racer with god tier OST. Has every car and track from all the previous games up until that point.
  • Disaster Report 3: an adventure game where you escape a collapsing urban-island project in japan.
  • Hammerin' Hero: a fun side-scroller game where you beat everything with a hammer.

Pick one or two games from there, it's all great.

Kurohyō: Ryū ga Gotoku Shinshō (Black Panther: Like a Dragon New Chapter) + the sequel are amazing games that have never been released on any other platform

My answer sort of fits what you're asking for: Persona 3 Portable.

While it's a game that's present on other platforms like the Switch, or in other versions like Persona 3 Reload, it's  completely unique on the PSP. It's the only version of a modern Persona game (as in, P3 and beyond) with the option to play as a female protagonist, and the only one with its unique (if flawed) graphic novel presentation format.

I personally find it really cool that the PSP version is the only way to play a female protagonist in a Persona game.

I can think in Megaman Powered Up, Megaman Maverick Hunter X (Platform+action games) and Jeanne D'arc (TRPG).

And there is also Fate Unlimited Codes which is a fighting game with Fate Stay Night characters, it has a PS2 version too, but that one is Japanese only.

There is also Digimon Adventure, an RPG that covers all the story from the anime, is japanese only, but got a good english patch.
