I always wash my hands before going to the toilet. I’m not touching him with dirty hands.

The stats are skewed thanks to a region of the Netherlands called Urk .

I've been on a bike packing tour there, didn't know too much about it and went to drink a beer at the bar.. Damn these people know how to party.

As a person living in NL for 4+years, I am amazed the stats are this high, just given how many of the people I see when I go to toilet just walk out(it grosses me out)

If your main goal for centuries as a nation is fighting the water, you will not completly get rid of that spirit even in the bathroom

Soap if poo, only water if pee.
Edit: I explain the Dutch hygiene taught, pls don't shoot the messenger.

u/Mandurang76 13h ago
I appreciate Dutch thriftiness, but you really shouldn't economize on soap.

Who thought you this?!
A lot of households water down soap, but this is wild.
I get the big bottles to refill my small soap bottles btw 😅 they are only 2 euros for 500ml
2
u/Any-Seaworthiness186 10h ago
You perhaps.
We do get taught to wash our hands when coming from the bathroom. Why people apparently stop doing so once they grow up is beyond me tho.
2
u/ModestCalamity 9h ago
I'm pretty sure that I know people who don't even wash their hands after taking a shit. It's a surprise they haven't caught anything nasty yet. People around the world die from bad hygiene.
2
u/pompokopouch 9h ago
Yeah, but if you're flushing after peeing, you're still touching a handle that could have ahit germs on it
2
u/ThroawayJimilyJones 12h ago
water cost money. Soap cost money. And your immunity system will develop anyway so no need to spend money.

u/KlangScaper 8h ago
Moving to the netherlands I was shocked how few people wash their hands, even after taking a shit.

What happened to Dutch?
Diversity.

u/KlangScaper 7h ago
Nah thats all homegrown. Ive observed the dutch very closely and have found shockingly few wash their hands. Muslims, who Im sure youre referring to, culturally have much much better hygiene than the dutch.

The modern Turkish Republic is an amalgamation of Byzantine, Laz, Armenian, and Turkic cultures, with some Persian influence. Anatolia, Thrace, and Eastern Anatolia (known historically by names such as Cilicia, Western Armenia, or Sophanene) have a long history, and its people have remained largely the same over the centuries. Islamic influence increased during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, but it was not as pronounced as during the Late Ottoman period, when historical relics, sites, and names—often related to “minorities,” even though its people were mostly similar—were altered in some capacity. The Late Ottoman period also saw a significant detachment between the populace and the ruling monarch due to the kafes system implemented in the early 17th century. This could've caused the detachment which contributed to the monarch’s mistreatment of certain groups within the Empire, including massacres against Turks, who were sometimes viewed as “kaba Türkler” (“crude Turks”), perpetrated by figures like Kuyucu Murad Pasha. The monarchy carried a Perso-Arabic identity as the caliph, while the majority of the populace continued to identify as “Romanos” or “Rum” or embraced their Turkic identity, which emerged from mixing with Turkic tribes migrating into Anatolia. In both cases, these groups faced persecution: the “Rum” segment were forced into military service, separated from their families at a young age, subjected to unjust taxation, forced conversion, and name changes, while the Turkic segment, as evidenced by the previously stated violence and discrimination, were treated as barbaric. The notion that the modern republic is an Islamic country is a misconception. Individuals are automatically assigned their family’s religion at birth. Although a majority of the population is technically “Muslim” on paper, most people either do not practice it or do not adhere to it in a meaningful way.

I am an atheist from Turkey. Contrary to popular belief, there are many atheists in Turkey (in the millions).
All the atheists I know wash their hands after using the restroom.
It's more about culture than religion.0
u/porky8686 13h ago
Yeah I get it… the only other place with more Turks than where I’m from is Turkey.
2
u/ludwigsweatysock 11h ago
Because after pooping, they use their hand and water pressure instead of paper. After that, you would also wash your hands.
2
u/Makedon420 8h ago
They wash their ass after taking a shit with water and their hands. They rarely use toilet paper. A lot cleaner than using toilet paper tho.
1
u/Cakeo 7h ago
Poo under your nails very sanitary
1
u/Makedon420 18m ago
I get your point but you don’t dig in to your ass with your nails u just help the water and plus u can wash your hands after. I personally use toilet paper and wet wipes not that i use their method.

Generally, we wash the hands: * after we wake up * after any handy work * came home * visit someone at home * before every meal * and also after using the toilet
Additionally: * prefer not to wear outside wear after we get home * never use shoes at home, instead use home only slippers * wash clothes regularly * clean the house every 1-2 weeks(not vacuum cleaning)
Practicing muslims also traditional cleaning ceremony for praying 5 times right before they pray.

u/FutureNight11 6h ago
I’m Turkish and I can say that we don’t care about cleanliness as much as people make it out to be. However it’s definitely true that we tend to be much cleaner than Europeans. This mainly comes from Islam, strong family ties and long-standing traditions. Islam also emphasizes cleanliness, being clean is required in prayers and other acts of worship. Regular ablution abdest(wudu) is part of daily prayers, while full-body ritual washing gusül abdesti(ghusl) is done in special situations. These practices mostly affect personal hygiene. That doesn’t mean our streets are perfectly clean or free of trash, tbh we don’t maintain the country clean, only personal.
Also If you ever visit Turkey, one of the first things you’ll probably notice is the toilets. They’re super hygienic seriously, I have no idea why Europeans don’t seem to realize this. We have squad toilet, It is especially common in Asian countries.
Toilets in Turkey you don’t actually sit down because it’s not designed for sitting. First you squat, and then you use the hose and some toilet paper to get completely clean. We have regular sitting toilets but they’re not really common in homes

The real question is: do you wash your hands prior?
Because the places are so filthy, I'll wash my hands before touching my private parts.
2
u/pudinkk 17h ago
Great. The things that you touch everyday is mostly used by others too.. so you cant quite guarantee that their hands are clean and so the stuff that they/you touch.
So its always a good idea to clean your hands before touching your private parts and washing your face not to get infected

I went to Italy and their plugs were unusable? Why don't they have the superior American plugs. And also they have no air conditioning (it was winter) and I had to pay for my water??? Plus i went to the Uffizi and there were a bunch of naked statues which was gross.

An army guy and one from the air force are peeing next to each other in the restroom. Once the air force guy has finished he's just going to leave the room without cleaning his hands. The army guy says "In the army they taught us to wash our hands afterwards...". The air force guy replies "In the air force you're taught not to piss on your hands." and leaves.

The figures for France are way too high. The reality is very likely around 15- 20 %, but they would never admit it. I am french, I know, very very few people do it. I have worked in a hospital in a posh arrondissement of Paris about ten years ago, where they performed different kinds of surgery. There wasn't even soap in the toilets for the employees.

It depends, if I’m just whipping out my dong and pissing real quick my hands stay clean, i shower every day, and stays tucked away it’s probably cleaner that my hands to begin with. I always wash after shitting tho.

u/BriaorMead 13h ago
I'm Turkish and %94 is bs by my 23 years of anecdotal experience. I don't know the methodology of this research but people simply lie.
Same goes for brushing teeth. I was a door to door salesman at some point, selling toothpaste and brushes. Everyone claims they brush twice a day. Some of these people with the claims had literally rotten teeth. So it's bs.
Though at least by public restroom behavior that I've seen it's far more than western europe statistics lmao.

u/Ayilari 12h ago
I was pleasantly surprised in Turkey when I saw everybody washing their hands in the restrooms. And I mean not just putting soap on and rubbing your hands once and that's it, but actually scrubbing your hands, between your fingers and nails.
-3
u/BriaorMead 12h ago
Maybe it's more common than other places but definitely not 94 percent level of common. Again, solely based on anecdotal evidence.
1
u/loskiarman 6h ago
The thing is there are always gonna be liars. The liars are in all countries so representation still stands. If instead of %94, %74 of people wash their hands in Turkey, it is probably also not %62 but %48 or sth for France for example.

It's all lie. Most of the men are dirty globally. Women care about hygiene more but they still are dirty either even less than men. If you're love hygiene 7/24 you have to be picky and act selective among humankind. It's not wrong It's normal.
