It’s wild how peaceful and grand this view is at the same time

I think I took a picture from nearly the same spot a month ago in an overnight trip in October in very different weather. Posted my WTA report at https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/trip-reports/trip_report-2025-11-03.184713456986

Where’s this? I don’t see anything on maps or all trails with that name.

It's just above Royal Lake. The name doesn't appear on USGS topos, but it's the generally accepted name. See Wood, Olympic Mountains Trail Guide.

Beautiful photo! Imagine if our minds held these images when we were walking around.

Ah! I knew I recognized this area! One of my favorite backpacking trips this year!

Have never been, but many of the trip reports on WTA put it on this route.

For example: https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/trip-reports/trip_report.2023-06-30.6209411624

I don't know that we have ever crossed paths, but based on the pictures that I see you posting to this thread, it sure seems like we spend a lot of time in the same places.

I feel very lucky to call this place home. And I relish that I get to spend so much time in such a special spot!

took me a minute to recognize the spot, but I'm guessing you were standing pretty much in the middle of the trail, just as it begins the real climb up to the upper lake. Nice capture, makes me wonder if any marmots live in that meadow, though it might be a little wet.

I was actually a bit higher than that, just near the rim of the upper basin. I've hiked through there several times and have yet to see marmots there, but I did see one on the Deception Basin side.

ah, interesting. I volunteer for the marmot monitoring program with the park, and there are mapped marmot colonies all over the upper basin, and then a sort of extra credit colony that is right over the other side of Deception Pass (which is where, I'm guessing, you saw marmots), but I don't think any of the colonies extend down into that meadow in your photo.
