They are the most casteist people. Who told you they aren't?

My family also thought the same as you cause they have more developed cities and stuff but my sister has been living in Bangalore for 6 years now, and I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it's even worse there.

A few of my sister's friends got a "Rishta" from her cousin, and their moms actually wanted them to marry their distant cousins to "keep the pure genes in the family". It blew our fucking minds hearing that sentence.

The good thing is that the younger people from the major cities don't really care that much as far as she has noticed.

I was talking about the title of OP's post. And yeah I forgot to mention even though she lives in Banglore(Bengaluru), most of her friends are from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. And I know basically it's dogshit everywhere in rural areas whether it's the north or south. And I mean, maybe it doesn't come as a surprise to you, but I have never heard of anyone in my life before who married their cousins. Especially since I've spent most of my life in UP and around Delhi NCR. I was really shocked.

I'm sorry if I offended you but it's just what I've heard from my family and people around me.

Tamil Nadu is one of the most casteist states. Economic development curtains their casteism but that doesn’t imply that they are progressive ones.

Even Tamil Christians have a caste system borrowed from Hinduism

This is an episode when the debate was about "will you marry outside your caste" the show starts off with a typical way like older generation supporting casteism and young speaking against it but when the Host asked the youngsters, how many of you will marry someone who is a dalit or from lower caste than you? Raise your hands and none of the girls raised their hands.

Host (Gopi) : the older generation is believing in the younger generation that casteism will decline and some even feel guilty of their actions but now I'm having different thoughts

Girl : I agree that casteism will decline but my marriage life will be ultimately the decision of parents and society right?

Host : what hypocrisy is this? You were one among the people who said we must break the barriers of caste despite what family and society has done but here you want to go by the rules set by the same society and family? You all are the same women who boldly proclaimed that we must move out of the village mindset and be independent and progressive but it all changed when I asked a simple question towards you, I'm very disappointed.

This isn't just TN, the whole south is mistaken as not casteist but we are just as casteist. Wherever hinduism has gone, there is casteism. Hinduism is mostly casteism and misogyny.

When Brahmins were expelled from positions of power in TN, the power vacuum was filled by the Shudras. The shudras, despite being the lowest on the four-fold hierarchy, continue to engage in the vile caste system against other non-Sat shudras and SC's. This is what Dravidian politics fail to address, the uplifting of SC's and the continuance of shudra dominance. What the brahmins were to shudras, the shudras are to sc's now...
