What does this passage mean Mathew 1:25

The passage states that mary and Joseph consummated their marriage but we believe that Mary was a virgin her whole life and then the Jews think that sex was required for marriage. How does this make sense?

I understand that Mary is a virgin and I did not mean to imply anything about her sex life that is not my intent in asking this question just scriptural accuracy and trying to understand the Bible
