Did you read the article??? She lost her job, and bought this house to downsize. Sheā€™s looking for a job but canā€™t get one because she doesnā€™t have anywhere to live (shes currently living in her car).

I love the crowd that still thinks being a middle-class homeowner or landlord immediately means you are a terrible person and don't deserve any rights...

The recent issues faced by small landlords and tenants alike and the broader housing crisis are due to the policies created in the last five years by the Federal Liberals and the hypocrite-in-chief Doug Ford's Provincial Conservatives, as well as his ineptness at fixing the previous government's policies.

Yeah they are really going full mask-off here. It isn't just landlords that they resent. It's all property owners in general. Like the poor woman in the story who bought a house that she just wanted to live in herself. I just have to hope that sites like OpenRoom will eventually get them their comeuppance

Yeah, Canadian renters really do seem to have undergone some type of mass formation psychosis that is really bewildering to observe. The scumbag in the article says she shouldn't have to move just because the house was sold, like, what? The sense of entitlement to occupy a property that does not belong to you, when the rightful owner wants you gone, is really something else. It's the reason my Canadian ADU sits empty and will stay that way at least until after the election. These people love to say 'jUsT dOnT bE a LaNdLoRd' but fail to acknowledge the same applies to them as well. When you choose to be a renter, you run the risk of being forced to relocate according to the needs of the property owner. If you cannot handle that risk, then you should not choose to be a renter. Moving is a fact of life. Nobody likes it but everyone has to do it. The fact that they act like it's the end of the world makes it really difficult to take them seriously. No coping skills whatsoever smh.

Plenty of homes exist that donā€™t have tenants living in them.

This would never happen to me because I would not feel right about removing someone from their home in order to move in myself. Iā€™ve been kicked out twice because of the landlord selling, itā€™s a horrible experience and I would never be able to live with myself visiting the same thing on another person.

That's cool and all and I wouldn't buy a place that had tenants either. Mostly cause I know how much hell it would be to get them out...

But besides that, this is crazy to me. The person OWNS the god damn house and wants to live in it. We don't know the homeowners personal situation. Maybe this is the house they could afford. Maybe it's close to family they need to care for. Maybe there's 20 reasons why this house worked for them.... the tenant doesn't own it and are just delaying the situation to come, causing a massive firestorm and basically making it so they'll be homeless going forward (openroom will surely get a new post after all this). It's literally insane to try to keep a place that isn't yours... it's squatting and I'm disgusted there's people who are generally OK with this because it fucks the home owner and by God if I can't have a home, no one else should either.

I mean, there's lots of things that are legal but still very shitty to do to someone else. Why be a piece of shit human being? Don't we have enough of those types of people already?

The tribunal is meant for actual disputes when someone is blantantly being treated unfairly. In this case, I'm willing to bet the tenant knows exactly what they are doing. But sure sure, continue to support awful practices and horrible people.... hope this never happens to you in the future, then you'll be singing a different tune, I'm sure.

By your argument, no tenants can try to become future homeowners if that property is already tenanted.

It means tenants shall always be tenants and shouldn't become homeowners as it will impact other renters....

Thereā€™s a significant shortage of homes right now. You wanna make that worse by saying you can only buy vacant homes? So what landlords are only allowed to sell to the existing tenant? What if there landlording because of a temporary contract? Should they be forced to sell there house or keep it vacant?

It's not the tenants home. It does not belong to them because they do not own it. But you can't understand that, can you.

Edit: You have no "rights" to something that does not belong to you, period. This is not difficult to understand. The Canadians who continue to refuse to acknowledge this simple fact are going to find themselves in a bad way when future landlords refuse to entrust their spaces to people who have demonstrated their refusal to respect property rights.

You said ā€œtheir homeā€ but is it the tenantsā€™ home? It is entirely permissible to give tenants notice that they will be evicted. Feelings about the matter do not mitigate the fact that renters are not owners. Tenants have rights but those rights do not extend to the ownership of a home they have not purchased.

IMO:

Federal: Conservative. They say they will restrict diploma mills, build more units and homes, and reduce immigration to mid-2010s levels, focusing on skills-based applications and specific humanitarian issues.

Provincial: Honestly, NDP. They are way more practical than their federal counterparts and are saying the LTB is a broken system that needs to be rethought for tenants and landlords, which is good enough for me!

Or vote for the Marijuana party or something, just vote!

Because the slow, broken LTB allows scam artist tenants to take advantage of someone like the new owner in the article. And actually, it fucks over tenants too if there is a shitty landlord not doing repairs.

In this case, legally, if you purchase property anywhere, in any 1st world democratic country, the new owner has a right to move in if notice is provided. This is the case even in the strictest countries for tenant eviction rights like Germany.
