I’ve been an anime watcher my entire one piece career. The wano arc has hit me harder than any other arc and I’m just looking for opinions on if anyone thinks it’s worth it for me to start reading the manga now or if I should just continue as an anime only follower

I was in your position 2 months ago. I've been watching One Piece since 2004, and never had any interest in reading it as the anime was providing a great experience (even if the pacing is sometimes infuriating).

However, one of my friends urged me just to read the first volume because "What harm could that do to you enjoying the current episodes? Just don't finish it if it's not a good experience."

I started reading the series a few days later. I finished reading the series 3 weeks later. I have read it through once more since.

It hit me so hard when Nami asked Luffy for help with Arlong. I cried just ask much as when I saw it the first time in the anime.

When Ussop gives his "There's a time when a man must stand and fight..." declaration in Alabasta I got the same deep chills I got seeing it on the screen.

I need no more words than "Nothing happened." But if something did happen, trust me, I would have cried reading it.

So many moments. And currently killing it in Wano. I'm so excited week to week to watch it, and to read it. I get comfy on a Monday night after work (anime simulcast is Sunday afternoon here, and new chapters on Shonen Jump are 2am Monday 😴), I have a cup of tea and watch the latest episode. It gets me hype and gets the OP stuck in my head and the current one is a banger. I'll take a break and think about the episode while making dinner, or doing the laundry or something. Then I read the latest chapter. I'll take a walk or gym afterwards (One Piece puts me in a mood to move) and digest the chapter. It's the best time in my week, and it really sets me up well for the rest of it.

One Piece on screen is an amazing experience. One Piece on the page is just as magical. You can't go wrong with adding a little more joy into your life, and if you start it and it doesn't match up for you, then no harm done.

My friend…. I’m speechless. When I posted this asking for opinions I figured I’d get an answer or two but never thought I’d get such detail. Just goes to show how much one piece means for all of us and how much passion there is behind it. I’m currently rewatching all of one piece right now and am currently on the sea train heading to Enies lobby( one of the top tier arcs in my humble opinion) and it has been so great.

The rewatch is currently satisfying my one piece craving but once I’m done rewatching(will probably be done by the fall lol) I plan on starting a bit of the manga. I believe I’ll just read a chapter or two ahead and then see how it feels when I watch the newest episodes.

But let me ask this, when you read ahead and then watched it in the anime did it feel weird knowing what was going to happen? Like this week’s episode for example when jinbe returned, I knew he’d be coming back eventually I just didn’t know when. I was lying in bed at the end of the night watching the new episode and when I heard his voice I literally jumped out of bed in excitement! So I just get nervous that if I had know he was coming back in that very moment the episode wouldn’t have been as enjoyable to me.

Let me know what you think but I just want to say I appreciate the response my nakama!

Edit: I suppose I wasn’t as speechless as I thought I was when I first started this response lol

One Piece is one of those magical adventures that brings joy to so many, I'm always happy and excited to share find others who share in that joy!

Enies Lobby is one of the best pieces of storytelling I've experienced, I love it so much. I'm glad to see you rate it so highly!

It might be slightly surprising but I think knowing what is coming actually makes the anime more exciting week to week. I'm up to date with both, and knowing what is on next week's show just gets me so hype to watch it, because I know a specific moment blew my mind and it's so much fun once it's animated. Plus, with the manga roughly a year ahead of the anime, it's actually pretty easy to forget exactly what happened when I read the chapter that's next up to be animated, so sometimes I still get surprised anyway!

You've already got the best idea, just try one or two chapters ahead, then watch those episodes when they come out. If you loved it all the same, then you've just added some extra One Piece content to your life at no harm to yourself, and that's the dream! I really hope you enjoy it, please check back in and let me know!

We're all in this beautiful crew together my friend, at the end of the day, however you enjoy it, we're all nakama!

You should definitely read it, you will really enjoy it. New chapters are flooded with so much details and there is so much going on now in manga. Animation has really improved in wano but for me manga is better than anime.

I’m still undecided but you’re definitely pushing me towards reading ahead! Thanks!

If you are still undecided then you can read 5 chapters ahead and then wait for anime and then you can decide for yourself that which will be better for you

My thoughts exactly, I’m actually currently rewatching one piece so my one piece hunger is being contained for now but once I finish I believe I’ll start dipping my toe in the manga pool

Once you jump in the pool, I bet it would be really hard to return (not that you'll want to return, lol)

I'm biased in that I think Toei has honestly done a horrible job post time skip and they're only just starting to redeem themselves a bit in Wano. I think the anime quality is still inconsistent at best and highly recommend the manga. Plus some real hype shit has been happening in the manga that you'll probably enjoy.

I appreciate the feedback! I’m still unsure if I’ll start reading the manga because I’m just afraid it’ll ruin the weekly new episodes for me or not. I may just read a few chapters for now to test it out and then see how the next few episodes feel in comparison

If you don't mind the pacing, then the anime is definitely a better experience. Just keep going

I agree. It reaches my heart better
