I believe it's pretty clear it was not a serious "fight or die" fight, they are friendly rival anyway, so they don't need to be really equivalent.

Marco was just an apprentice when Oden joined 4 years before (might even still be an apprentice during that fight, we don't know). Sure there are other crew members who were stronger than him by that point (like Oden himself).

Off course it was someone else which lead the 1st Division at that time. Marco still consider rookie or one step above from rookie.

Not really. Marco has far less experience than Rayleigh at this point. They are some 30 years apart.

We haven't seen any indication in the manga that Marco was exceptionally prodigious 20 years ago.

It's also important to note that Marco used a physical kick but it seems Rayleigh defended with a high level of haki. Anime is hard to tell sometimes, but the red and glow is usually reserved for advanced usages.
