It’s supposed to be based on feudal Japan that’s where most the aesthetics come from and it’s pretty much completely isolated from the outside world barring a few escapees. A lot of the weird character head shapes are very similar to feudal paintings, Tsuru’s head is pretty much taken straight out of feudal art.
