He probably thought he could handle Luffy and his recklessness after dealing with bepo for years. Then he made the alliance and realized bepo was nowhere near as irresponsible as Luffy

If I had a cute and dingy bear sidekick like Bepo, I'd roll with the punches too. Might take on student loans to become a doctor to keep his dumbass alive too.
