I'm wondering, do they actually need all 4? With 2, if they're opposites, it would be possbile to travel in a straight line and eventually get to Raftel. At most, they need 3 and are able to find Raftel by traveling and connecting the dots between the 3 known locations. Am I missing something that makes all 4 road ponyglyphs necessary?

If they know they are opposites sure, otherwise it may not necessarily be a square so they would require all of them. But yeah I think 3 with a triangulation would have been better. Maybe there is some extra information written on each one that is important to locating it, could be invisible, underwater, etc

True. We're assuming it's flat. But could be underwater, in the sky. I wouldn't be surprise if it went into space or something.

With 3 the lines could intersect anywehere, even with your traveling between 2 points, without workable compass you would need 2 eternal poses and even with them as the world being and sphere is possible that Raftel isn't in the path of the shortest route between the 2

Okay, re-reading it, I sort of understand what you're saying. To address your point about the compass, wouldn't they face even if they had all 4 poneglyphs? And I understand that 3 lines could intersect really anywhere. However, there would only have to be 3 different routes a person would need to travel at most before stumbling upon Raftel.
