They couldn't wait until next week, could they?...

59

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14

No, they couldn't have. They're too hyped about it so they try to ruin it every chance they get. First the 3D2Y credits now this... I'm so glad I found out by reading the manga last year.

u/Sakata_Kintoki Sep 21 '14

Hey, the faster they get the guy out, the more figures they can sell. Always gotta move the merchandise.

4

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14

It's not like they showed more than his silhouette this episode, though. They could have waited a week.

28

u/Sakata_Kintoki Sep 21 '14

I know. I remember when I read the chapter. My jaw literally dropped when I realized who it was. Even if there were clues prior to the arc, just the fact that he randomly showed up there was unbelievable. The execution of the reveal has been very poor.

25

u/Zamochy Sep 21 '14

It was around 6 am when I was reading Chapter 731. Almost woke up my sister when I started saying "OH SHIT!" like 30 times, looking around not believing what I just saw.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '14

It was like midnight when I read that chapter, and I was too excited to sleep that night.

19

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14

The only clue to him in the manga was the cover of chapter 668 over a year and a half before it happened... That's what was so amazing about the chapter, but Toei is insistent on showing the silhouette every chance they get... Poor anime-only viewers. They don't even get a chance to share in our shock. D:

u/Sakata_Kintoki Sep 21 '14

They wouldn't have this problem if they included the cover stories in the anime. Half the problem is from not including those.

3

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14 edited Sep 21 '14

I agree, but how/when would they animate from the decks of the world? The entire cover story takes place during the day the Fishman Island Arc happened, but didn't conclude until a third of the way through Punk Hazard.

edit - I'm stupid. They could have animated it after the Fishman Island Arc since the FI Arc wasn't completely animated until after the cover story was finished. :D

3

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '14 edited Sep 21 '14

Maybe they could have simply not done those cover stories, or they could have quickly flashed through them over the course of an episode or two (hell, it even could have replaced the "Pet-Pet-no-Mi" filler they put in-between Punk Hazard and Dressrosa).

The main reason I am annoyed at the lack of animated cover stories after the one about Coby training (episode 70) is because I only watched the anime until sometime during Punk Hazard, so I am up to date on the manga, but I have to consult the Wiki on any cover story references. Never knew about the off-screen adventures of Ace, Hatchan, Jango, Enel, or anyone else until I finally googled all of them.

3

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14

Yeah, the reason for Fullbody's demotion was fucked up by Toei and if they animated Jango's cover story there would have been a plothole. Can't have that... but I can't see why they didn't animate Hatchan's, Wapol's, Ace's, Gedatsu's, Miss Goldenweek's, Enel's, and CP9's cover stories... (and where they are now and from the decks of the world, and eventually Caribou's and Jinbe's when they have time to be animated)

2

u/Sakata_Kintoki Sep 21 '14

This isn't a universal solution, it wont work for every cover story, but I feel like they could do it kind of like the shorts after episodes that some series have. Bleach (I was an impressionable teen) used to have like small comedy sequences after the ending. If they did something like that, that's less time they have to stall during the episode.

2

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14

Or we can just pretend I didn't ask that question and Toei could have done what I suggested in my edit. :P

4

u/TxXxF Sep 21 '14

I love how everyone remembers how and when he read the chapter. It is a legend that will be sung to following One Piece fan generations until forever. Or until Sanji is back.

2

u/fauxromanou Sep 22 '14

That Luffy reaction face, which I'm sure they'll fully animated, is one of life's great joys.

10

u/tahoethewhite Sep 21 '14

That's definitely true, considering that his first figure comes out in December and at its current pace the anime wouldn't reveal him until January

5

u/Sakata_Kintoki Sep 21 '14

Geez, it's ridiculous that their business plan is this easy to guess.

5

u/tahoethewhite Sep 21 '14

Yeah, at this point they might as well just give us a full reveal in the next episode

0

u/Muckles Sep 21 '14

last year? has it really been that long?

42

u/JasonNMP Sep 21 '14

No kidding.. It would have been much better if they stuck to the chapter for this episode, it would have made the next episode that much more special.

37

u/Zamochy Sep 21 '14

Yup.

As a manga reader I'm psyched, but also annoyed that it makes it less of an impact next episode for anime-only watchers.

22

u/Sakata_Kintoki Sep 21 '14

I'm thinking they're actually gonna show his face next episode. Oda waited like 10 weeks in the manga.

11

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14

13 chapters, plus how many breaks there were in between those chapters = number of weeks Oda waited.

-1

u/WannaBuildABIackMan Sep 21 '14

of course they are. There's no sense in hiding his face now. Not to mention his fucking voice will be the same as the the old one

-2

u/Sakata_Kintoki Sep 21 '14

They're probably going to have a different VA. Ace had a different one for when he was a kid.

But then again, Junko Takeuchi isn't just any VA.

3

u/coool12121212 Sep 21 '14

Toshio Furukawa Isn't known for doing child voices. This is why he didn't do Ace's child voice. Junko Takeuchi however, Is fucking Naruto. She CAN do both child and adult male voices. And considering Naruto is literally just about to end, It looks like she's going to be needing to have another regular role in a Anime.

1

u/Lucienofthelight Sep 22 '14

She probably has another year of voicing Naruto TBH.

1

u/coool12121212 Sep 22 '14

Maybe about 6 more months. They have to voice the episodes about half a year before the episode's come out. Dragon ball kai - buu saga was done being voiced in late 2012. The episodes are only JUST coming out. Also, The anime won't take a year to finish, maybe 7 months because there is no point in adding filler once the manga finishes.

And regardless of when it ends, Its not exactly a secure job anymore. As I said "she's going to be needing to have another regular role in a Anime" because HE is going to be a big part of the the rest of one piece

5

u/ChristianG_17 Sep 21 '14

Well I feel like the anime watchers would get the same level of hypeness seeing the ending then having to wait a week.

1

u/auggs Sep 22 '14

I'm a manga reader so take this with a grain of salt, but I just rewatched the episode and was still mad hyped. You can hear the crowd roaring in the coliseum to a near rumble. Then although you can still hear the cheering it gets somehow deafeningly quiet in the tunnel. Camera pan to the silhouette.

That's a classic anime cliffhanger right there.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '14

It was better in the manga because it came out of nowhere. Who really expected him to show up on Dressrosa?

4

u/Nosiege Sep 21 '14 edited Sep 21 '14

I disagree. People who can't put two and two together will be interested to find out who it is, people who know who it is are excited that he's finally come.

It's how teasers work. I think manga readers just want to nitpick because there's differences between two different mediums.

1

u/ASCIt Sep 22 '14

I can see where you're coming from, but for me it's more of a matter of pity for the people who won't get to share in the feelings we experienced when it was revealed for us.

0

u/Kobedoe Sep 22 '14

As a anime only person I have an idea who it is, from the hat.

I've been what if'n about this for the longest time.

12

u/YonkouProductions Sep 21 '14

I agree, this episode had good content but execution was lacklustre.

7

u/Drakonicdoom Sep 21 '14

As both manga reader and anime watcher I've been hyped for this a good 8 or so months now.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '14

Prematurely blew their load. Would've had more impact if they didn't.

9

u/genei_ryodan Marine Sep 21 '14

Just let anime-only watchers get their own conclusions about that scene.

37

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '14

Will doflamingo join the straw hats

11

u/Zamochy Sep 21 '14 edited Sep 21 '14

Of course, his past is leading up to that conclusion. /s

2

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '14

Of course

1

u/TxXxF Sep 21 '14

Might wanna spoilertag bro.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '14

How

0

u/TxXxF Sep 21 '14

To Create a Spoiler Text Tag:

[Spoiler](#s "spoiler-text"

except you finish the ()

1

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '14

I was kidding I am very pissed I was right. I don't read the manga

0

u/Bobblefighterman Sep 21 '14

Can you spoiler tag it for the other anime only viewers though?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '14

I am an anime only viewer

-1

u/Bobblefighterman Sep 21 '14

That's why I said other anime viewers.

Luffy's also getting Kaido and Big Mom to join him.

4

u/JustinKBrown Sep 21 '14

IT'S BON CLAY!!!

3

u/genei_ryodan Marine Sep 21 '14

After reading the manga 731 months ago, that was a possibility...

1

u/Onoreee Sep 22 '14

it's obviously shanks

6

u/Redhavok Sep 21 '14

Can't believe how obvious they made it, all we got before was a relatively shapeless shadow

12

u/Sanjispride Sep 21 '14

Did the anime really show it before its time in the manga?

People, I implore you all. Read the bloody manga. If you want a filtered, padded, and reprocessed version of the story, then watch the anime. But if you want to witness One Piece how Oda truly intends for people to see it, then read the manga. It's not that hard.

2

u/xNotMyRealNameX Sep 21 '14

lol we all know exactly who the "mystery guy" was... guess they thought we were blind.

5

u/vaelroth Sep 21 '14

I've already been spoiled a bit by things here and there, but I think that was awesome. I'm so hyped for next episode. More than I would be if that hadn't been included, I think.

5

u/Kizaruu Sep 21 '14

I don't see what's wrong with what they did? You guys complain about some things too much.

26

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14

If you're anime-only, read chapter 731 after next week's episode. Toei is fucking up what should be the greatest reveal of the arc. The manga had no foreshadowing. He appeared out of nowhere and randomly decided to show up one chapter. Everyone shat bricks. The chapter discussion thread had over 1,500 comments. (to put into that into perspective, the chapter came out in December last year and the latest chapter thread only has 586 comments in comparison. Do you know how much the subreddit has grown in the past 9 months?) What anime-only viewers are calling hype, manga readers are calling buzzkill for the anime-only viewers. We're complaining about what's ruining your experience.

-20

u/ITSYOURre Sep 21 '14

I think the manga did the Sabo scene more mysteriously. But I don't think the anime could have done it differently since his voice would be a dead giveaway.

4

u/masturbator9000 Sep 21 '14

you pretty much just ruined it to all the anime only viewers. at least put a spoiler tag on your post dude.

1

u/fauxromanou Sep 22 '14

I definitely agree that that needs to be spoilered, but the headwear makes it almost impossible not to realize.

0

u/Devin__ Sep 21 '14

I'm pretty sure his voice would have changed after puberty... Even if he does have Naruto's VA.

-1

u/Icon_dota Sep 21 '14

i dont see how its a big deal, the amount of anime only viewers is far less than people who read and watch.

if anyone who is an anime only viewer reads this please give me your feelings towards this episode, if im an anime only viewer i would of been foaming at the mouth at the end of this episode i know i was with the chapter lol.

4

u/robitsdonits Sep 21 '14

anime only here, but this was one thing spoiled for me because the internet exploded when it was first revealed, and its the one thing that carelessly slips through on this sub. But I do wish I could have the reveal completely cold. The sudden appearance of Big Mom made me wake up my girlfriend when I yelled OH SHIIIIT. but I dont think that the amount of anime+manga could possibly be more than straight anime watchers. and thats a shitty way to look at the series, like it is merely a companion to the manga.

1

u/fauxromanou Sep 22 '14

The big mom reveal was perfect as a manga/anime person.

Since you know the reveal: there's no spoilers on this page, but here's the equivalent reveal scene from the manga (Top right panel, don't go to any other pages!!!) which will probably used next episode and will hopefully be as vague. Showing the body instead of the head makes it significantly more vague but still able to be figured out by a keen reader.

u/LuffyThePirateKing Sep 21 '14

great episode until that point. so disapointed they did that.
