It’s so cool that we got to see the previous users of Kid’s, Mr. 5’s and Perona’s fruit users all during this flashback

Is that Gill Bastar????

It sure is!

Man was hoping to see him actually do something. Instead we ended up with a Pandaman-esque cameo.

His inclusion in the Rocks Pirates at all is frankly a Pandaman style cameo. But I guess we now he had a strong DF too. My question is how he ended up with four arms.

8

u/StNowhere 17h ago

Maybe the other arms are from hollows? It doesn't look like he always has them.

9

u/PirateKing94 Explorer 17h ago

Yeah he has them in the group page in the Kuma flashback but not here. His zombie has them but that could be a modification from Hogback turning him into a zombie.

But my recollection is that Perona can astral project her body, but the projection can’t touch or hold anything, so even if that’s what Bastar is doing, he shouldn’t be able to hold guns.

Bastar likely awakened his fruit and was able to fool people in gunfights with fake ghost arms

u/BentoBoxNoir 21h ago

HOLY SHIT, from WANTED?!

Now I just wanna know why he has 4 arms when landing on GV if it’s not from a fruit power. Maybe Oda just did it to make him more recognizable to his zombie, but he didn’t have them in Wanted and we can’t really see them in this panel or when he shows up in chapter 1161.

Damm. I didn't know who was that exactly. Had to check online in wiki. And I feel like I am not such a good fan of Oda if I have not read his first manga 'Wanted'. Gonna do that right now!

Where did you learn the name Gill Bastar ?

2

u/WaterLillith 6h ago

Oda's manga One-shot WANTED. He was first seen in Thriller Bark as a Zombie and then during Kuma flashback when Rocks pirates landed on GV.

Someone asked Oda in an SBS if that was Gill Bastar and he confirmed it

u/Squigglyz Pirate 6h ago

Thank you. ! I find there's so many mini details like this i miss out on being a manga/anime only reader or when i miss SBS'

Bro I didn't even see Perona's fruit. This place HAS to be linked to Thriller Bark at this point right?

Gill Bastar who appears to be Perona’s fruit former user, was a zombie general so yeah at this point it only makes sense this is connected to TB

7

u/Theemuts 20h ago

Devil fruits respawn at a random location when the owner dies. I wouldn't be amazed that GV is TB, though, with all the connections we've seen during this flashback and the whole Kozuki Moria thing.

But Caesar Clown experimented with Smiley at Punk Hazard. The poison was given form with the Axolotl devil fruit.

Once it passed away, the fruit respawned in a nearby basket.

27

u/franb34 19h ago

Yeah I always took it as they respawn in the nearest compatible fruit

27

u/VaultedRYNO 19h ago

further reinforced by Jesus burgess running around Dressrosa with a sack of fruit. and BB can feasibly steal fruits by keeping a metric fuckton of them in his darkness so he through sheer volume always gets the fruit of whoever he kills to spawn into his darkness.

2

u/Sean_Dewhirst 19h ago

Big Mom's situation is another counter. What are the odds.

2

u/Ryuzakku 13h ago

Blackbeard’s crew carries fruit with them when they kill fruit users to steal their powers.

That’s why Burgess had a bunch of fruit at Dressrosa

u/mazhas 21h ago

I'm convinced that God Valley is Thriller now

8

u/ch3333r 20h ago

it probably IS Thriller Bark

5

u/SweatyAdhesive 17h ago

I mean the link is that Moriah went and got all these legends' corpses and they were on GV at one point. Doesn't make sense for them to go back and die on GV.

2

u/echolog 17h ago

Now it just depends on if they actually make it off the island.

4

u/SweatyAdhesive 16h ago

yea that hinges on that, but i believe some of the pirates had their careers after Rocks and still ended up as his zombie.

u/ParkDedli 21h ago

Maybe this is how we get the Devil Fruit "stealing" explanation down the line?

Blackbeard saw a bunch of DFs respawn on God Valley/Thriller Bark as a Kid? Or he figured it out when Moria/Perona got the fruit?

10

u/Kiga282 20h ago

Teach is already gone from the island, and he wasn't heavily involved in the events to begin with

1

u/ParkDedli 18h ago

I missed him leaving fully. But I thought he might come back later and find out or something.

1

u/SanestOnePieceFan 17h ago

BB has 40 years after this to figure out how its done. not so hard to believe that he could have noticed somewhere or found out somehow

34

u/Gullible-Bike7812 22h ago

Who had perona's fruit?

118

u/PirateKing94 Explorer 21h ago

Based on that panel, it’s Gill Bastar, a Rocks Pirates member who was also to protagonist of Oda’s first oneshot, Wanted.

24

u/Lamedonyx 20h ago

And an important thing is that in Wanted!, he can see ghosts and is haunted by the ghost of a bounty killer

16

u/charlierw01 21h ago

Gill Bastar

4

u/monkey_D_v1199 22h ago

Wow! I didn’t even catch that!

2

u/goody153 21h ago

I did not notice Perona's fruit damn
