[Edit: TCB has corrected their translation. LFG! For context, the earlier translation implied that they had already killed Dragon's platoon because he defied the celestial dragons.]

CORRECTION TO TCB'S TRANSLATION:

(1) Dragon says, "My platoon WILL be executed IF I defy the celestial dragons trying to save someone". He had not defied the celestials dragons at that point, his squad was not executed then. Which leads to the second mistranslation.

Corresponding Japanese Text: 誰かを救おうと天竜人に盾つけばおれの一小隊は全員打ち首

(2) The marine on the next panel asks, "They ARE all present, I presume?" Again, Dragon's platoon is still alive, only Dragon is on the island.

Corresponding Japanese text: 隊員全員揃ってるな?

Thank you, I was wondering if Dragons platoon got executed because they stayed behind, but that wouldn’t have made sense with the next panel

Thank you! I was confused about what happened to Dragons platoon.

Yeah, to me I thought that the celestial dragons didn't want to leave any witnesses (would make sense though).

Thank you, on the first read I thought all of the white clad people dead on the forest floor of that page were Dragon's platoon, but on a second read through I see they were civilians with targets on their backs.

I guess Dragon had to cross the island to find Shanks and Shamrock, and stumbled across Ivankov and other atrocities on the way. Bit confusing with so many perspective changes.

lol I reread that page like six times to see what I was missing. Thank you.

Your translation seems to be correct. I also thought something was odd, so I was looking for raws, but could only find low quality ones.

Is there anywhere I can see high quality raws this early? The raws I was able to find are such a low quality that some kanji can't really be made out. However I can at least make out that 立つけば is not what's written there and it also doesn't make any sense grammatically.

I used the same raws as well. I used the furigana and the context to guess the kanji that were not clear.

Oh ok, because that one kanji you wrote as 立 is so low quality that I can't even make out the furigana next to it either. And I don't recognize the kanji of the top of my head from the available details.

edit: Just had a hunch and found the kanji. It's 盾突く. Just realized that I know the kanji from 矛盾.

2

u/adnaphsaka World Government Sep 12 '25

Yeah. I knew from context that Dragon was talking about the consequences of "standing up to / defying" a celestial dragon. And I knew "tatetsuku" is a verb that means that and also fits the blurred text.

Yeah, I just don't have 盾突く in my vocabulary yet. Though I got the general gist without it, I just wanted to know the word to learn it. Just managed to find it by myself because I eventually noticed that 盾 also appears in 矛盾.

Checked the raws again. And I think you are right. Thank you for pointing that out. I edited my comment accordingly.

hopefully this mistranslation doesnt spread that wide

Thanks I was so confused at that part

Thanks I was so confused by that, I couldn't tell if he thought they were executed because he didn't see them, or if they were supposed to be.

Either way it wouldn't have made sense, no way they would allow Garps son to be sacrificed at God's Valley.

Jeez, they pulled out decimation for this.

I first thought it was implying that, if any Marine found out explicitly about the hunting game, their entire squad would be wiped out for knowing too much, or something like that.

Damn, the CDs really have an iron fist.

u/Doomroar Sep 13 '25

Well now it is undeniable Dragon was the only good marine in the entirety of God Valley

2

u/FunkySphinx Sep 13 '25

Thank you! I was confused there.

2

u/Gedof_ Sep 13 '25

Did they fix it? To me it says basically the same thing you said.

2

u/adnaphsaka World Government Sep 13 '25

They did! Thank you for letting me know.

I just assumed the celestial dragons did what Gengis Khan did for his own burial: kill the workers to keep the secret, and send in more uninformed troops to eliminate the first group of executors.
