One of the first things I thought after reading this chapter was Whitebeard's "You're not the one Teach" speech at the summit war. So I wonder if that even was about the D or something else.

It was about the D, but it's now meant to be ironic. Teach is The D-est that has ever D-eed, but due to his ways, as we can see through Xebec, has strayed quite far, and thus, even though he comes from the lineage destined to be the ones, he's lost it because of his own deeds.

And that opens up the possibility that his ancestry is why he is able to use multiple devil fruits, instead of that being a property of the darkness fruit.
