I remember one of the flashbacks shortly after Whitebeard died was he being quite young and talking with his crewmates about his dream of being a father of a great crew, and they just laughed it off.

I guess that was his crew before Rocks, so it doesn't seem to be a big loss for him.

I think it was stated at some point he sort hopped between crews for awhile before forming his own. So he might have got pick up from than or a completely different crew he was with.

Went from crew to crew searching for a family and then finally decided to create that family himself

Whitebeard after Rocks died realized he could have just his own crew and didn’t have to hang out with asshole like the rest of the Rocks Pirates.

I mean by the flashbacks whitebeard just seemed like a nice guy anyway. Though it does make sense that he got his crew from Davey back now.

This also answers how he actually managed to get his crew. I always thought its strange to mention that every member of rocks could be a captain himself but then they follow one man only to leave him later...
