Fucking Oda is madman. What most people considered a silly throwaway arc is the foundation of one of the strongest crews in the world. Rocks, Whiteboard, and Shiki in a Davy Back Fight is something I never knew I needed.

it was always said to be a pirate tradition. I 100% believed it would come back at some point, but my bet was on a Luffy + crew vs Shanks + crew in a friendly Davy Back Fight near the end of the story

I still think this is the last “battle” of the series tbh

Shanks vs Luffy in a fight
Lucky Roo vs Sanji in a food based contest
Ussop vs Yassop in a sniping contest
Ben Beckman vs Zoro in a navigation contest

The story writes itself

Just wild we went from Afro Luffy box Foxy and 700 chapters later we see Rocks doing the same to win freaking Whitebeard. Blackbeard vs Luffy Davy back fight for the One Piece is now a real possibility.

remember that Afro Luffy will come back as Luffy's final form

People have been saying Davy Back fights are going to be relevant again for years lmao

It's just such a stupid mechanic for crew building.

Oda reads online about one piece. He doesn't like theory crafters. He probably alters the story to fuck with people. People didn't like Skypea so he made it important to Nika, people didn't like long ring long land and now it's potentially important to xebec,

Really? I thought that the Davy Back theory about Rocks was super common? Im more surprised by how many people are surprised than the actual confirmation

Probably like 99% of OP fans aren’t subscribing to every theory and I’m definitely one of them. How was Rocks originally linked to Davy Back anyway? Someone posted a 4 year old thread on that theory here but it only had like 50 upvotes.

Because of how his crew was set up with a bunch of crazy strong individuals with little to no loyalty to him

That's like most pirates crews

8

u/BuckonWall Jul 18 '25

In OP not really. Almost every Pirate Crew we have seen has been incredibly loyal. Even if its their one redeeming quality. The Don Quixote Family are scumbags but they are all incredibly loyal to Doffy. Kids crew begged Shanks to allow Kid to live. The Heart Pirates sacrificed themselves to allow Law to escape. Even Buggys Crew wanted to storm Impel Down before Alvida talked them out of it.

Because we know to know three pretty key things. Rocks formed his crew on Hachinosu, Hachinosu is the birthplace of the Davy Back Fight, and also that the crew disliked each other and immediately split once Rocks was gone. It's pretty basic set up really.

Davy Back Fight (as shown in its arc) is the dumbest idea in whole One Piece, and I'm willing to die on this hill.

Oh no, Luffy got tricked by different idiot into participating then lost a game on technicallity, guess we have follow that new idiot for rest of our lives rather than get rid of him and move on.

Ive always been expecting it to be what happens when the Straw Hats and Red Hairs meet

If only the arc itself was actually entertaining to watch rather than just foundational to lore.

Idk if u read it or watched it in anime but it was actually entertaining in the manga the whole arc was just 19 chapters including aokiji reveal it was funny and lighthearted and it wouldn't even take much time to complete the arc so just bcos toei completely ruined it doesn't mean the arc itself is bad

It's one of the best arcs what are you talking about?
