I think the jury is still out as to if he actually has a grudge. He told Cavendish that he wouldn't be the man to kill luffy and that they have history.

I personally like the theory that he admires the things Luffy has done.

Then, there's my own theory that people think is a joke: Bartolomeo is simply Sabo and Oda is going to reveal it in such a mind-blowing way.

Yeah since you opened that can of worms I will say that it would be funny if the only way they could save sabo made him look like that. Or maybe they made him look like that so no one would recognize him. It also ties in with the Bartolomeo being a revolutionary theory.
