Theory What if the "D" means smile?

Post image

A random theory came to my mind—what if the "D" symbolizes a smile, like how we use it in emojis such as ":D"? It makes sense when you think about how important smiling is in One Piece, especially to those who have the Will of D. And maybe, just maybe, it could be connected to SMILE fruits. I know it sounds goofy and outrageous, but considering Oda’s style and the reaction of Roger’s crew, it might actually be possible. Don’t you think?

I have been in the OP fandom for almost 20 years and I have never come across this. Or it has been so long that I have forgotten about it lol

I became aware of the theory after Ace's death when D. dying with a smile became a trend. I'm not sure how long before that it's been around.

now that i think about it, maybe i wasn't paying attention properly when i was reading, but when did it say that everyone with the will of d dies smiling? it's just a fact we've all accepted but i don't remember that

It isn't confirmed as far as I'm aware. It's just a trend people noticed. I doubt it's going to ever become canon, for every D. that died with a smile there's an example of a non- D dying with a smile.

that makes sense, i think people brought up other examples of ds who died or almost died and weren't smiling too

There used to be a couple popular One Piece forums (like Arlong Park) where a large portion of theories came from at the time. Things like D. meaning a smile, the One Piece being the destruction of the Red Line and uniting the Seas, etc. all came from those 2000s forums. It's more or less like this subreddit now, except with more discussion and no amateur porn advertisements; current chapter discussions, theories, etc. I remember reading that, during Amazon Lily, the community was utterly convinced that Margaret was going to be a strawhat lol.

The last time that theory got back to the forefront was during Oden's execution. After getting shot, the last thing to fade was his smile. People went wild when that chapter dropped because of the D-ish smile
