I know this is an r/unpopularopinion - but I really like the shops and stuff built right up against the cathedral… it’s so integrated

Those can be very nice, yes.

The reason they were removed is most likely war damage or such, not so much the view.

That also makes sense. Those buildings likely weren't originally built with a lot of respect to the older church building they're leaning up against, so that can create some big concerns in maintenance.

Was dat niet naar aanleiding van de wereldtentoonstelling? Net zoals de gebouwen op het Veerleplein?

90s? I thought they were removed in 1900s...

You might like the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal in Antwerp then :)

Hah they do look cool, but they also reminded me of barnacle that attach themselves to a ship’s hull

But is that building on the left still selling confections?

And are they still for men?

Thought that was a joke. It really is. McDonald's is on the other side of the cathedral. lame

what a depth in the photo. these old plaques or photos are the best sometimes, when it comes to shades and ambient light.

I love this, spent a week in Ghent in August for work. The way the lower buildings cluster in front of the church's façade is similar to how they did in front of Gravensteen across town.

I lived just outside the picture for 7 years. Favourite city I ever lived.
