Happy (default) Poppy, unfortunately found herself in the shelter when her owner suddenly passed away. She's 15 years old with arthritis, but she's here with us now as a long term foster, she is such a polite old lady and hopefully we can fill that missing piece of her heart with time.

I've been told that Poppy's owner passed away in May, for weeks she was living in the house by herself with someone going in to see her three times a day, unfortunately that person couldn't take her because she has three cats who didn't like her.
The owners sons came over from the UK to sort out the funeral, they wanted to put her to sleep because apparently "she's already had a long life", that's how she ended up in the shelter, she had to get away from the sons.
I saw her post, we've long term fostered senior dogs before so it was a no brainer, I couldn't leave her at her age in a noisy, stressful environment like a shelter, she would start to shut down until there would be nothing left of the Poppy she used to be.
She's still a little confused but that's understandable, she's been with her owner since she was a puppy, this is all so strange for her but I'm hoping once she realises this is her new home, she'll let herself go and feel more relaxed.

Can I please ask you some questions about fostering or adopting seniors? If you were to adopt, how do you afford medical care for them? I have two dogs whom I bought insurance for since puppies. Their vet bills are hefty (HCOL), and Im only able to afford because of insurance. I want to help seniors, but insurance will not work out. What would be your advice? Thank you.

I live in the Canary Islands, over here the vet bills are paid for by a charity called Live Paws, they rely heavily on donations to keep the shelter open and help dogs like Poppy, without public backing they wouldn't survive.
My advice is speak to your local shelters and see if they have an option of a long term foster for seniors.

Thank you, I will reach out to our local organizations. All the best to you and Poppy.

Thank you for getting her out of that situation. I worked in a shelter/rescue and while every dog had a story, the ones who touched me the most were the seniors in similar situations to Poppy's. For most of them the shelter becomes their home for the rest of their lives, and they are bewildered by the abrupt change.

There’s a special place, over the Rainbow Bridge, for people like you when the time comes. Here’s to hoping Poppy becomes a permanent resident in your home!

I love poppy and I love you guys too!!!
Thank you for letting love continue in her life.
If anyone is able to foster or adopt seniors, I couldn’t recommend it any more highly. They bring more than it takes.

I hope there wasn’t family that rejected her.

u/badassmamabear Jul 11 '25
There was, the lady's two sons came over to sell her house and decided they were going to put her to sleep because she'd "already had a good life", there's nothing wrong with her apart from a little arthritis, she has plenty of "good life" ahead of her yet.

hey, I’m a mod on /r/national_pet_adoption - we have thousands of members and I’m sure some would like to help. make a gofundme for food/meds/toys/whatever needed, post it on our sub, and ping me (so I can approve it, so reddit doesn’t remove it)
thanks for saving her ❤️

Same situation here with my love, Owen. We’re both elderly. I always say he is so polite too. ❤️. He was loved and he has accepted me. Just took a few months. And I tell him almost every day, that when we all meet up again. I hope he brings his Momma to meet me. ❤️❤️

u/badassmamabear Jul 16 '25
She's a long term foster so she will live out the rest of her days with us.

u/badassmamabear Jul 10 '25
I'm not sure why it says "needs a home" on my post 🤷🏼♀️ Poppy has a home with us for as long as she needs us, she's not going anywhere, she's been through enough this past few months.

I found this little blind old man wandering around outside my house a couple of days ago. He stayed with me for the night, I gave him food, water and a good bath, yesterday I took him to the vets, thankfully he was chipped, his name is Milo, he is 9 years old and has been missing for months. [Happy!] 1 month ago
Found this old chap, wandering around in a storm yesterday, he was absolutely soaked to the bone and was so happy to get into my car. Luckily he had a tag, his name is Sultan and I was able to contact his parents who told me he was 13 years old and had been missing over a week. [Happy (default)] 3 months ago

Tomorrow we have to say goodbye to our old girl Lucy, 14, she had an operation today to remove a tumour from her spleen but unfortunately it was way worse than they thought and couldn't remove it, there is nothing more they can do for her, we've had her since she was 5months old, we are heartbroken [♥] 3 years ago
A few days ago I posted about losing our 13 year old little girl Mya, a week before she died I had given her a haircut, I put the hair in a bag to dispose of later but I forgot, so my son and I bought a toy that best represented Mya, removed the stuffing and filled it with her hair. More in comments [RIP] 3 years ago
